I just noticed on this page that it talks about a camera connection kit for the 30-pin connector. So you may be able to do video chat after all..

http://www.apple.com/ipad/design/

No - that kit only allows you to get pictures off of a digital camera.

iPad Camera Connection Kit
The Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera. The Camera Connector lets you import your photos and videos to iPad using the camera’s USB cable. Or you can use the SD Card Reader to import photos and videos directly from the camera’s SD card.

Jeez people quit complaining, if you don't like it don't buy it. I'm going to get one, most likely 32gb with 3g, for my textbooks. I spent $550 on books this semester, so a one time $730 isn't bad if the price of books is around $20 or $30

Go to coursesmart.com - the savings is not that great on eTextbooks...

The hardware is pretty cool, but there's a few software things missing before I'll bite.

1 - Multitasking support. I'm ok with this not being on my iPhone since I usually don't do more than one thing at once (excluding the core functionality with mutitasks.) but on a larger device its kind of necessary. I'd like to be able to chat and surf at the same time or look up stuff on the web for research and then copy quotes or type in that data into documents, having a text editor and browser open at the same time.
2 - Flash support in the browser. This screen is big enough, it should support flash for those site that have flash.
3 - File support. I want to download certain files to upload to my server.

Some of the above I'd probably have to wait for a hacked OS, but by that point I'm sure some competition may be on the ball and will have released something competitive.

Hardware wise, the pad itself is nice but text entry will be horrible. The keyboard stand is a horrible design, the keyboard is way too close to the device. I'm hoping a 3rd party releases a keyboard attachment that basically makes a base that can be a protective case and a keyboard that folds out, like the keyboard half of a laptop, but I'll probably have to go with some other device to get these features.

I was considering replacing my unibody aluminum Macbook with this, but unfortunately that won't be happening.
Okay, that's just asking for the impossible. Apple makes computers. I seriously doubt they're going to hurt that part of their business by replacing a $1000 computer with a $500 one. This is meant to be an adjunct device.
Anything more is gravy.

Engadget hands on:

- It's not light. It feels pretty weighty in your hand.

- There's no multitasking at all. It's a real disappointment. All this power and very little you can do with it at once. No multitasking means no streaming Pandora when you're working in Pages... you can figure it out. It's a real setback for this device.

- No camera. None, nada. Zip. No video conferencing here folks. Hell, it doesn't have an SMS app!

I am surprised by the 4:3 form factor. What were they thinking?

They were probably thinking Letter (8.5 x 11") and A4 (8.3 x 11.7") documents, as well as many books, have roughly a 3:4 height:width ratio, and that widescreen books are not yet in vogue. I know, I know... you're thinking, "But what about pamphlets and Legal sized documents?" To that, I have no response.

Am i the only one getting P!$$ed off with people saying giant iphone/ipod.. why cant people see beyond that...

It's hard to see beyond it when all you see is a giant iPhone. Well, perhaps a giant iPhone is not all that accurate since the iPhone has a camera.

Don't know if anyone else has noticed but I'd say it's almost a certainty that the glass dock on the iPad Home Screen is going to move over to the iPod touch and iPhone.

yeah, and no support for protools, adobe cs and bootcamp... :D

I know you're joking around, but regarding no bootcamp...

Yes, no bootcamp. But...

A big nerd-use for this device will be remote desktop. But Apple's got to let sessions stay open (i.e., multi-tasking) for it to be actually useful day-to-day.

You remember that feeling the first time you were with a girl and she took her bra off and you didn't know it was a wonderbra?

That pretty much sums it up.

So when is the 4.0 announcement coming?

LOL!!! You've pretty much nailed the feeling there....

I think maybe as a more tech savvy person it's easy to forget how cool and easy this is to use for someone who isn't.

For example, my grandmother who is intimidated by a computer would probably sit on her couch and use this for hours to play Scrabble.

To little children, and grade schoolers who can't type a multi-touch interface is very intuitive because it is more of an analog to every day life.

Plus, you can't underestimate the tweens and teens who will be begging their parents for one of these INSTEAD of an iPod touch or Nintendo DS or PSP. The parents will reason that they can use it too, the kid can use it, the kid can play games, and if you attach a keyboard they have a little computer for schoolwork.

Children don't need windows 7, Ubuntu, or OS X on their computers and neither do the majority of adults who use the computer for light duty tasks.

Even many college students would be fine with this over a laptop. You can't underestimate the number of people who use the computer JUST for Facebook and light web browsing.

I have so many relatives who have dedicated computer rooms and giant monitors with over powered machines attached just so they can log on for 10 minutes in the evening to forward a chain letter with adorable cat photos. . The only thing missing is a camera so those same entry level users can post things to eBay or class project.

For a business person or someone in one on one sales they can share brochures or product info in full glory something that can't be done on the iPhone or Touch and impress the clients.

Let's not forget teachers, lecturers, medical professionals and many other applications where a small phone isn't large enough but carrying a laptop around like a platter isn't appealing either.

I think we need to wait and see on this. Its a good price for education and organizations with the option of all the time connectivity. I think the important thing to remember is the value of this to people who aren't like the users at macrumors.com (i.e. tech savvy).

Good post. With the photo-upload adapters, this is the only computer most people need. They don't need a full-fledged operating system because they don't understand it, and they end up damaging their computers. This is intuitive, portable, and has many qualities (like an IPS display) that so many screamers seem to overlook.
I would have done some things slightly differently (like being able to run 3-4 1:1 iPhone apps side-by-side, or the lock screen), but this is isn't an oversized iPod Touch. It's much more, and if you fail to see it... look at iWork again, at least.
This is the ultimate Information Appliance... with that much screen estate, developers can do amazing things... like the Brushes app. Exemplary.

I'm very disappointed that there were no announcements about the iPhone or iPhone OS. I couldn't care less about the iPad, but I thought at least some kind of bone would be tossed out to the rest of us. Oh well.

Help us Steve, you are our only hope.

Thought for sure we'd be learning how to sign language with an ipad, looking at Verizon data contacts, downloading new iPhone OS, tethering over wifi and playing music through iphone's built-in FM transceiver.

Now that you have your fancy shiny iPad launched Steve, please clean up after your iPhone.

My big concern...

My big concern is with it being that big is how in the hell am I going to type a email while I'm driving?! That can't be safe...

I think I'd prefer a netbook to this device. At least with a netbook I can connect a USB DVD-drive and watch films there and then, or install any piece of software I want, or use video conferencing, install a bigger HDD.
Just can't believe it's so locked. I can see the reasons why for a phone but not for this.

(my apologies if this has been posted already, servers are getting hit pretty hard at the mo)

ideas....thats about as much i like about it, the ideas behind it.

the thick border/bezel is just irritating.
if it had the thin bezel say the 15 or 17 had itd be perfect visually.

Why is everyone so hooked up on the bezel? It's the only product I can think of where the bezel actually serves a purpose because it gives you somewhere to place your thumbs when you're holding it, without touching or obstructing the screen area. It would be hellish if there was content all the way to the edge, you'll have pressed 10 different buttons by the time you've walked across a room.

Wow, I am shocked at all the crying fan boys on here. This iPad is sweet, I don't see what all the complaints are about. The price is an absolute STEAL, I don't even care about the 3g, the last thing I need is ANOTHER fee on my cellphone bill.

You can try to justify the need, but you don't.

Jeez people quit complaining, if you don't like it don't buy it. I'm going to get one, most likely 32gb with 3g, for my textbooks. I spent $550 on books this semester, so a one time $730 isn't bad if the price of books is around $20 or $30

You can try to persuade yourself that you might save money by buying an iPad, but you forget that you can resell a book. How can you sell an electronic book? On a used iPad? With other e-books? By sharing your iTunes account?

Yep, I posted this a few pages back. Netbook killer indeed. :)

basically about $1K for the first year's use.

would be worth it with:
1. built in iSight for video conferencing
2. HDMI output (show your movies on a TV, stream netflix, etc)
3. USB input (for external microphone, hard drive, etc)

Right now it's a supersized cross between an iPhone and an iPod Touch.

I am sure that by this time next year, there will be a new version out.
