...and you can use it (the iPhone) as a phone. I read this as more of a bigger iPod Touch.

I wonder if VOIP apps will run. Via wimax (which it has)? Via the prepaid (cheap?) 3G?

I'm not sweating the lack of phone capability.

I mean - the return of the brick phone, but squashed (with a brick, LOL)?

Really?

Can some of the disappointed explain what they wanted or expected instead of knocking what it does have?

I expected multitasking and a front-facing camera at the very minimum. The battery life is good, but the magic ends there.

Now that I think about it, what I really want is a Wacom digitizer tablet with an LCD (IPS) display, which would connect wirelessly to a real Mac or PC. I don't expect this from Apple, though.

No Students can't handle tech even Teachers can't.
I just caught a Teacher going to manhunt.net today at work.

Yeah, I'm sure the same thing was said about using laptops for educational purposes. The fault lies not in the device, but in the publishers who typically charge several hundred dollars per textbook. Electronic readers should theoretically reduce overhead, which (given an honest broker) would reduce the price of e-textbooks. Alas, greed pervades.

In any case, it's not at all crazy to consider using tablets for education instead of books; just think of the back and shoulder injuries that would be prevented as a result. "Kids" can handle technology just fine, so go back to keeping them off your lawn, grandpa.

I'm totally going to get the 64GB Wi-Fi version. It's exactly what I've always been thinking about. Just think about it. Do all the casual stuff on your iPad (browse the web, email, photos, music, chat, and so on), and use your computer for hard jobs, like programming, designing or gaming. In fact, as I write this message, the iPad seems to be more and more of a genius. 32GB Wi-Fi iPad + standard configuration MacBook seems to be the best a student can get.

Well I sure hope it doesn't burn your legs like my MB and MBP do for starters

Also do you think a Car Charger will appear?

It can charge from USB. $5 today. EBay.

How many iApp developers are now pissed as they have to re-write top titles to make use of the larger screen estate and extra functionality?

I'm delighted. I assume others are as well. Nobody HAS to re-write their apps. You CAN re-write them to make them dual-mode and use the extra real-estate.

Disappointed doesn't quite cut it.

They haven't updated the UK site either are we actually gettin git over here and I'm sure it will follow the stupid Apple UK prices.
How many times must people from UK have to complain about inflated prices of products, when ALL of your products are inflated. This happens every. single. time. with EVERY single product that comes out. Games, movies, consumer electronics, EVERYTHING. It's not stupid Apple, it's stupid British Pound, your exchange rate hurts you.

I love techie's

Most people don't give a hoot for big lists of features. It's about usability, experience and what can be done with it. Techie's just seem to fail to be able to grasp this.

There is a large number of people who mostly browse the web, do some emails, maybe the odd document or spreadsheet. That is who this device is for. More features = more complexity and negates usability and experience. Techie's always seem to think more is better...it really isn't.

This is consumer appliance not a computer. If you want access to kernels and write programs to cure cancer, this clearly is not for you. If you want an easy to use device which does some basic things you need very well - hiding the complexity underneath - then it is...

No video conference = meh

So far, this looks just like a big iPhone, but without the phone. The most attractive thing about the iPhone, for me, is that it consolidated so many devices into one pocket: phone, gps, camera, laptop (for web browsing/email/movies), iPod, game system, etc.

Why would I want to start *adding* things to my bag, when all they really offer is a large screen?

That said, if this thing offered an elegant way to videoconference (e.g. a front-facing camera), I'd buy one for that reason alone. The e-book capabilities would be a nice add on.

I fear the iPad is going to go the way of the Apple TV .... some potential, but will be met with a lukewarm reception. No way they're selling a million of these in year one.

Would be great if you children out there can expand your vocabulary beyond FAIL and EPIC FAIL. You sound like morons despite the fact that you probably have some intelligence. Quit using the stupid catch phases and be original.

That's what she said!

[Cue laugh track]

I think people miss the point of the Apple advantage. Apple's advantage is they didn't just cram the old stuff in a new chunk of hardware, they redesigned the software to match the hardware providing a clean user environment.

There is a reason why the Tablets shown at CES we're ho-hum. The UI's sucked!

Apple has proven over and over again... it's not just hardware features that make a product great... feature list wise, most Apple products are either slightly ahead or slightly behind. But when put all together... they are unique and people want them.

Again... I personally think that the iPad is going to be way more significant that what several people here have indicated. No... it's not the replacement for your iPhone or your MacBook, but there is a place in this world for this device.

Personally... someone that does a lot of business travel and flying on planes, a tablet makes a lot of sense. Have you ever tried to work in the cramped seats on a plane? For my quick trips, this would be awesome. All I need is email and internet most of the time with a little support from office applications.

Anyway... I think this will be cool... I'm sure 2.0 will be what's really wanted... sort of like the original iPhone to the iPhone 3G....

There has been no indication that the OS will support multitasking. That is a major drawback in the software. Android and Windows systems support multitasking. I have not used internet on an airplane because I am under the assumption that most airlines prohibit the use of cellular services. I never bother asking if they have internet.

Hey, I'm looking for things to really like about this thing. Using it as an "unchained" 3G-like VOIP phone (at only $29 prepaid monthly, only when you need it) would make it an actual phone. And that would not involve holding it up to your ear- that's what solutions like ear buds with microphones (you know- just like the ones that come with iPhones) are for. Right now, I use my laptop as my (very occasionally needed) "mobile phone", but I've never held it up to my ear.

You forget students: they are going to love it
College, high school etc

No, they're going to want a device that will run Office
and any other apps that they need and not just what Apple makes them get from the app store.
They'll want to be able to hook up any peripheral they want.
They'll want a webcam, BD/DVD drive, lots of storage and a decent sound system.
They want to multitask with lot of programs.

During back to school I could never keep HP Touch Smart convertible tablets in stock.
I was hoping Apple would come out with something like that.

12.1" lcd and about 4.5 pounds.

Before you blow that $730 on the idea that textbooks that might cost $550 next semester are going to be had on this thing for only $20 or $30, I suggest you think long and hard about exactly why the book publishers are going to sell their books at about 94% OFF, when you HAVE to buy them for class anyway?

That $730 burning a hole in your pocket will pay for next semester's $550 worth of books. Else, don't be surprised if you spend the $730 and then need to come up with just about $550 for the e-version of the same books IF the ones you need are even available on the iPad.

I seriously doubt the media will make up for the expense of the iPad. Just let the pricing vs. the "printed" versions of other media in the iTunes store help you reset your new book media pricing expectations.

I hope your dream comes true, but I just don't see the book companies shooting themselves so thoroughly in the foot just to help Apple justify the sale of more iPads. Put yourself in THEIR shoes and think about why you would want to do that.

Sorry Harry.... it's already happening. I know two companies personally that all they do is in the business of reformatting text books for digital delivery. Publishers DONT want to print! It what they had to do, but now they don't. It does not mean that $300 text books are now going to be $14.95 either. There is rights management software built in... and BTW... Apple has it perfected in iTunes... and they will sell the content for less money, but not have the expense of printing 1,000's of very expensive books.

Publishers are dying to go this route... the people who are in trouble are the Printers.

That's a trick quesiton. The iPad is magical, it would never hit the ground.

No, it would never hit the ground. It would re-define the ground from the ground up. It... it would sort of... rewrite the rule of physics. There would be no more ground. With the iPad we... we stopped the ground.

Hey, I was being humorous, but forgot to include the :)

Seriously, I don't see any reason why not. It's got a microphone (another missed feature by most). It's got speakers. It's got a 3.5mm connector that presumably has both the audio out and mic, like the iPhone. It's got WiFi and 3G. They do now allow 3G VOIP apps in the App store.

So, there you go. You got your brick-squashed brick phone! ;)

Newsflash: It's called a Tablet PC. Thinkpads have had it for like 10 years now. I'm writing this post on my HP Elitebook 2730p tablet with a stylus.

It's amazing how sheltered some of the Mac-only fanboys are.

Yes, I knew the Tablet PC existed yesterday but it didn't revolutionize anything. It remained a niche product because of poor software, price/performance, marketing, etc. The iPad can succeed where past tablets have failed because it overcomes most of those limitations, except that it doesn't have a stylus. And I'm saying that it should. And if it did, it would work better than any tablets before it and as a tablet-stylus device, its appeal will be wider.

So, just jumped from page 53 to the end so apologies of this has been mentioned already.

Engadget are reporting the hands-on iPad is running iPhone OS 3.2. Maybe they have more planned for iPhone OS 4, (and by that I don't mean a camera but I do mean multitasking!).

It's here.

Not sure what to make of it. I agree with the people who are saying "it's just a big iPod Touch"; they are right. Is that a bad thing, I'm not sure.

I would have been happy with that with some extra functionality such as handwriting recognition, (but, again 4.0 could bring this to the table).

What I would really like to know is can I stream to it from iTunes on another computer (so I can take it to bed and watch a film from my computer or Apple TV?)

In the build-up people talked about 'back to my Mac' functionality built-in. I guess this is possible with LogMeIn Ignition (or others if they're available).

At the moment, I'm a bit indifferent about it. I can see some of the good points but I am struggling to see how it fits in the middle of the iPhone and MacBook(Pro) users as in Steve's slides.

One single slim device for carrying around textbooks at school and writing papers and listening to music and cheaper than a Macbook? Forget about it. It's a slam dunk for students.

Exactly! I can already see myself using this at school. Writng my papers, reading textbooks, making powerpoints, etc. Looks like a beautiful machine, too.

LOL! They do have something LIKE THAT! It's called a MacBook! They sell Millions of them to students today!

If you want features like that... BUY A LAPTOP! That's not what the iPad is all about. Ugh!

Waiting for the software overhaul

The iPad looked really sleek in the video on Apple.com, but as many others has already mentioned - the lack of multi-tasking is a definite dealbreaker.
It would be great to be able to run Spotify, IM, Safari (or preferably Firefox with Adblock Plus!) and other apps simultaneously.

But I want much more than just multi-tasking:

Software:
  • An OS X like Finder app - With 64 GB of storage it makes sense on a formfactor as big as this. I need to be able to SAVE ANY FILE to the filesystem.
  • Non-sandboxed apps. I NEED Airfoil to stream music wirelessly to my stereo. I NEED Perian or Plex to play .mkv/.m2ts files among others. I won't convert hundreds of videos just to be able to watch them on-the-go
  • Native acess to network resources such as NAS and printer
  • Fully wireless syncing over Bluetooth and Wifi. Come on, do you really expect me to connect it with a wire everytime I want to sync it? This really goes for the iPhone too btw. Hope we se a overhaul of that in 4.0.

Hardware:

  • Hardware-wise... WHERE is the freaking SD-card slot? I'm not using an adapter for this. This isn't the 00's

So I'm going to wait and see what the most probable software update brings around WWDC 2010. It's a cool gadget though, and I will probably end up owning one if the OS improves a bit.
