Nail. On. Head.

Multi-tasking will come - it's inevitable. I'm sure Apple just want to do it in a way that it doesn't detract from the current simplicity and user experience. This is just the start - the o/s will evolve as the iphone has.
Please, stop making me feel so good about waiting for Apple to get a product right for me.

iPhone OS 4.0 with multitasking had my interest. I guess it's waiting for WWDC now. I'm sure there is going to be a long speech about how complicated introducing multitasking was to preserve the user experience.

Wow! 2000 comments. Is this the right place to look for the link to the event video that will be posted later on? Any guesses on what the URL will be?

Why on earth not? This is a perfect device for note taking. It has a near-full-size keyboard, iWork, and no doubt 500 other note taking apps soon to be available in the App store. Given its great battery life and portability, I'd say this beats pretty much any MacBook or net book for that task.

How would you type on it? The requirements for eye and arm angles (screen vs keyboard) are totally different yet you can not bend this thing. Netbook/notebook is much better and it has MS Office (Word, OneNote and what not)

The iBook Store looks delicious!

I mean it REALLY looks like Delicious Library. Very creative... it might have been ten years ago.

I have a MBP...i would have an desktop (iMac) the iPad would be interesting whn i travel.
But i am disapointed because:
1- No camera
2- I would have prefered the Mac OS X because: It would be flash compatible, i could download stuff (SW, use iLife, etc...)

Maybe i will change my mind but having an iPhone and MBP i really do not see where would be the need...It is just a giant iPod...so what?

What about MBP upgrade and Iphone 4.0 OS??!!!!:mad::mad::apple::(

"near-full-size keyboard" isn't full sized, plus nobody wants iWork, its all about Office. I need a quick way of typing notes, and see what I'm typing without my hands in the way. And I don't want to have to set up a dock and mobile keyboard accessory every class, might as well get a netbook...It looks awesome, and I would definitely get one, but its just not even worth $500 to me...Its just not for me lol, yet

Agreed, and I've used the same argument myself previously, but such a buffer is going to be +/- 5%, not 40 odd percent, even in today's financial climate. On iTunes Apple's still happy to say $1 = 60p.

For something like 40%, I would start looking for some import/regulatory tax/overhead that folks are missing. Additionally, required (defacto or mandated) middleman overhead costs. [ for example Apple may be taking some skim to help pay for rolling out stores. If they are on a huge/fast real estate bindge would not be surprised to see them try to get the money to pay for that out of the locals. Put local money in local banks... easier to get loans from them. Similarly Apple has had distributors that charge crazy high overhead. Until they can get their own stores in place to blow that player out of the water ... may have to put up with their "local monopoly" tax. ]

Yes, I thought it was delicious library when I saw the picture before I read the accompanying text. Please, it's bad enough having the naff wood effect background on the compass on the 3GS... that sort of thing started and should have stopped with the Commodore Amiga.

Darn, looks like I'll have to wait for the next revision of the iPad before I shell out my cash. Was really looking forward to a decent device to keep me entertained while on the bus. But I just realized the lack of multi-tasking is a deal breaker for me.

I'll wait for a model where I can listen to music and surf the web at the same time. Or perhaps say... download a movie while I'm typing an email.

You brave, crazy fool - what do you think this is, 2010?

The problem I think is that this is an entertainment device and not so much a productivity device. I'm not seeing students for example buying this just because it would be nice to read e-books on, because you would need to carry a laptop to.

Kindle DX is overly expensive, probably because e-paper technology hasn't been around that long, but it does try to be something different than the iPad - a simple non-backlit device that emulates paper.

Maybe it's magic when you see it in person..

LOL I thought the same thing.
Don't most people take notes in a Notebook? Same size as the Ipad.

Sorry guys but Im not blown away, its a big iPod - I know this has already been said 2000 times but hey....

Its a big iPod for old people in nursing homes etc.. how can you even take this thing serious. Even a generic cheap netbook as a standard OS - Linux etc.

Need MS Word to take notes in a class???? Wow. I don't get it. All of the word processors are screwed in technical classes anyway (graphes, quick sketches, math equations, etc. ) . But that is another issue for which an app may appear.

Unless your hands are incredibly thick not sure how obscure (or perhaps the app needs to be improved). With a larger screen can displace the keyboard much farther away from the insertion point than with tiny 4" screen. Only a few more inches makes a significant difference. Couple that with an IPS screen (which has high quality viewing angles .... hmmmm wonder why that might be important) you can likely see your text. Perhaps not tons of the context around the insertion point though. As long as the insertion point stays at the "top" of the screen and the keyboard at the bottom there should be significant separation between to two. [ On a small screen you do get more of the obscure effect when don't have direct angles. ]

If the word processor software put the insertion point directly above the virtual keyboard then it is that placement approach that is defective, not the overall approach. I suspect software in this category that is just quickly hacked and slapped on the iPad for this purpose will suck. That won't be surprising at all. There is going going to be lots of apps that suck.

Or you can buy Lenovo IdeaPad U1 (Google it) for $1000 and will give your both laptop and the pad. Two CPUs (ARM and Intel) better resolution, real OS (Linux + Windows 7) and so much more.
I'm sorry, but if you compare this to this, there is really no point in arguing. Let me rephrase: the main idea is that I've got a 10" screen which I can comfortably use on the couch for all the stuff I do on a couch: chat, watch videos on YouTube, check email, use iCal, and so on. When I want to do (web) programming, I go to my MBP, and use the full keyboard, my Logitech mouse, and a real OS (Snow Leopard).

What Apple is going to do is keep improving the product. We'll get to have multi-tasking soon enough, I don't know about Flash, but apart from stupid ads and YouTube (which has its own app), I don't really use Flash that much. In fact, I don't really like Flash that much.

We haven't seen it yet, and if there is something I'd really like to see, that is definitely a stylus, and use it as a pen. I was once very tired when I came back from school. One of my classmates wrote me a link on the last page of my (paper) notebook. The first instinct was to drag my finger across it in order to bring up the Cut, Copy and Paste menu up.

I never heard anything about Microsoft saying they are not making Office for it?
Enjoy your really tiny keyboard on your netbook.
If you need a quick way of typing notes why do you need Office? Use wordpad.
Epic Fail at trying to say bad things about it.

Quick notes? There's an app for that, Notes. And there are other 3rd parties in the App Store. I've used a Lenovo netbook once, and it really sucked. The trackpad was a bad joke, the web site was a full one, on something half of my 13" MBP's screen, and so on. I really think the iPad is a hit. It's just that some people don't understand that you don't need a full computer to browse the web, check your mail, chat, or browse the Twitter timeline. By the way, imagine Tweetie 2 on iPad :D The keyboard is well-thought. The space between the keys seems reasonable, as well as the size of the keys.

What I'm saying is that it doesn't suit my lifestyle, so much for the product changing to fit the consumer. Enjoy your even tinier touch keyboard on your iPad. Epic fail at trying to be a dick.

Remove the screen from the U1.
