TG Daily reports on a rumor it heard during CES claiming that Asian suppliers of 10.1-inch LCD and OLED screens are experiencing shortages of their products as Apple snaps up available stocks for its tablet device.
"We were designing a product for a customer and we needed 10 inch screens, but we've been trying for months and can't get one from any of the Asian suppliers," an anonymous designer for a firm wishing to remain nameless told TG Daily.

"We were told that Apple pre-ordered them all. All 10 inch LCDs, and all 10 inch OLEDs too," our source continued, redundantly adding "it's for the Apple tablet."
Reports of Apple planning to use an OLED screen for its tablet have been few, with one November report curiously suggesting that the company would delay the launch of its tablet until late 2010 in order to launch two models, one carrying a 10.6-inch LCD screen and one with a 9.7-inch OLED display. Apple's potential use of OLED technology in a number of its products has, however, been a popular topic for many years now.

Today's report of Apple causing display shortages is rather similar to a claim made last month by T3, although in that case it was claimed that the industry was experiencing shortages of 7-inch screens, with Apple speculated to be about the only company capable of demanding such quantities.

I think that OLED screens might be for some really cool new iPhones and iPod Touches for 2010...I imagine they will use the LCDs for the Tablet.

Yaknow, after all this, it would be really funny if Apple didn't come out with a tablet after all, but simply stated on the 26th, that they think Tablets are still a waste of time.

I would be bummed, but I would also laugh a little.

Good grief, by then the whole world and his dog will have released their alternatives. Early spring would be a better timeframe.

That would be hysterical.

This could simply be a rumor by the manufacturers to try and spur demand for their products, but I doubt it. 😉

SO maybe 3 models?

7", 10" LCD, and the premium 10" OLED?

Gee, who has the time machine to go forward and share some news???

Why doesn't Apple just wait until 2025 for launch? There'll be some really cool screens then. Or just delay making anything until 3565 when everything is so cool that Apple can release way better stuff? -_-

OLED 10.1" Screen? How much will that cost?

A $1,000 tablet just won't fly in my opinion.

I don't think Apple will be mixing techs (LCDs & OLEDs) in the same device.

I think the normal LCD ones are those that are 'ridiculously priced' while the LED ones are 'ridiculously OVERpriced' 😀

Although I am really excited to see a tablet unveiling in a couple weeks, I kind of hope they don't even mention it because that would be too funny.

Or, Steve, if you are reading this, do this please:

Go through the keynote and talk about everything but the tablet. Then say that is all. Walk completely off the stage and just when people starting getting up to leave in utter shock and disappointment, come back on stage for a "one more thing."

The internets would cry during that minute you were off stage. Oh the power you hold in your hands Mr. Jobs.

I love how many on this forum dogged the Zune HD and pretty much anything that competed with an Apple product that also contained an OLED screen because of the disadvantages in sunlight or whatever. Now, an Apple product with an OLED screen (most likely from similar vendors of the competitor products) will be "cool" and "sweet" and "premium". I guess all deficiencies with OLED tech have either disappeared suddenly, or Apple fixed it for the whole industry.

No Oled!!

I don't know what kind of disease you people are suffering from, but you aren't thinking clearly. OLED might have some advantages over LCD's, but the disadvantages are not wroth it. People here seem to forget, or are ignorant of the fact that you cannot see OLED's in the sun very well (much worse than backlit LCD's) , different colors die at different times, and the screen itself HAS A VERY short lifespan. With acknowledging all of those facts, why in the hell do you want OLED? I've never understood why you nuts want it so bad.

OLED has one more letter than LCD, so it must be better. At least that is why I want one!

Better to release the LCD version now, then the OLED in 6 months time, and gain extra $$$$ from the must-have-the-latest-and-greatests as they cast off their 'lacklustre' machines for new and shiny.

The downside will be the whining from those whose machines are now 'redundant' and 'overpriced scrap'.

Were it ever so... 🙄

No way they are doing both an LCD and an OLED product. I don't buy this rumor. They may have ordered all the 10.1" LCDs in existence, but not OLED.
