No way they are doing both an LCD and an OLED product. I don't buy this rumor. They may have ordered all the 10.1" LCDs in existence, but not OLED.

I wonder if the context of the statement is different than what is assumed. I am not sure who the manufacturers are and what they make but what if the meaning here is that Apple has all the screen manufacturers tied up supplying LCDs, that they have not had the time to produce more OLEDs.

The List continues

OLED screen? hmm I would be glad to pay a premium for that. Here's what we know so far as rumors.

  • 10" or 7" screen LCD or OLED or both.
  • A "hybrid" OS, with a "sexy, intuitive" UI
  • Network capabilities
  • iSight, with other I/O
  • New multi-touch gestures
  • A beautiful new Tablet that will require us to "THINK DIFFERENT"
  • Pricing between $599 to $999.

It sounds like Steve/Apple are going to get it just right. The only thing that will seal the deal, is the 2 week media notice if an event will happen by the rumored times, tomorrow would be the last day for Apple to "technically" announce it.

Yaknow, after all this, it would be really funny if Apple didn't come out with a tablet after all, but simply stated on the 26th, that they think Tablets are still a waste of time.

That would make me so happy. I still don't understand all the hype.

Whatever happens, I am leaning towards waiting for the 1st revision. Buying any new product like this seems like a very high risk.

There's no such thing as an Apple Tablet. Some French telecom guy told me so. :D To keep his job.

Dog3: "I don't think Apple will be mixing techs (LCDs & OLEDs) in the same device."

SEVERAL OF APPLE'S PATENTS INVOLVE DUAL SCREEN DEVICES. Some to be virtual keyboard laptops, some to be slates, some to be easel kiosk displays. All the same device.

Have you all ever seen the production of high end tech? It is impressive, expensive and time consuming. My ex physics teacher told me about 8 years ago when Apple had those really good cinema displays out, still considered some of the best, that the reason the price was so high was because so many didn't pass quality control. So of course the price was passed on to the consumer. Therefore, those organic displays don't roll off the assembly 100%. So if an outfit like Apple snags up a large batch then yeah I can see such a shortage. But don't forget Apple isn't the only game in town wanting them new displays(IF THIS IS TRUE.COUGH COUGH). So I'm sure there is also a backorder on them also.

Crazy?

Maybe they are both in one product.

That would certainly be a surprise. I think that would cost too much though.

assuming the shortage rumor is true...

Did anyone stop to think that maybe the increase in production for one screen technology might be creating a decrease in production for the other? Thus creating a shortage of both.

Apple offering a device with the choice of two different screen technologies is a non-starter. Doing so would create support and distribution complexity and product confusion, and there is zero upside.

Does it mean

a) All manufacturers produce same screen without any difference
b) Apple puts different screens from different manufacturers into its tablet
c) This rumor is not reliable

What do you think?

What do you think?

Yes, Apple often sources displays, memory chips and hard drives from multiple suppliers even within the same configuration.

This rumor (of LCD and OLED shortages) _LOWERS_ my interest in an Apple Tablet.

Why?

Because it implies that they wont have a PixelQi display.

They make them in different factories afaik.

Apple has given less than a week's notice in the past. I'd say we have until next Thursday or Friday to rule out something on the 27th.

I've been hoping that wouldn't go that route. It'd make for an awkward interface, and look incredibly obsolete in two years.

I wonder if that is true. One of the advantages of PixelQi is that their displays can be fabbed on existing LCD production lines.

A large order for PixelQi displays could tie up the production lines causing a shortage in standard LCDs.

So, the LCD part of the rumor could fit, but the OLED part of the rumor?

That was what we were told at the time, but it turned out to be a price fixing conspiracy. I remember telling folks with broken laptop displays that it's cheaper to buy a new computer rather than pony up $1000+ to replace a 14" screen. Laptop screens are not high end by any standards.

This rumor is just more BS. We have been hearing that Apple has bought out the supply of all 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. etc screens for MONTHS now. Every week more rumors bout apple buying up more screens of various sizes, or flash chips, or what have you. If we take all the rumors of the last 6 months the new "tablet" must come in about 5 different sizes and dozens of different shapes.

I would be bummed, but I would also laugh a little.

Lol, no . . no it wouldn't. :( We will have our tablet ! :D
