You know not since the iPhone has there been this kind of media buzz! Everyone is second guessing everyone else. I am just marvelling at just HOW impressive Apple are able to manipulate the media like they do.

They seem to have this uncanny knack of making me think... 'Dang a Tablet computer from Mac. I don't need it! But I WANT IT!!!!'

Cannot wait for the 27th!!!!

I've considered all the tablet news, and if I had to guess (and believe me; I actually HAVE to guess), I'd guess the following;

- It will have a stupid name (like iTablet or iSlate .. it's an Apple thing, they've done it before)
- It will run iPhone OS 4.0 (this much is certain)
- The App Store will be a selling point
- I doubt the current apps will run on it by default, I think we all have to prepare our apps to work with iPhone OS 4.0, just like Apple did to developers before iPhone OS 3.0; convert your app or else..
- I hope it won't, but it probably will, come with 3g support and yet another monthly bill. I pray they will release one without 3g so I can get it to work in Europe a.s.a.p (and not have to buy it at WWDC and illegally ship it back to Europe)
- It'll probably be expensive with a provider, and cost as much as a MacBook without a provider
- I hope it doesn't come with OLED because it is not worth the money

or .. It will never come out, my heart will be as broken as during WWDC '09 (with the exception of the Snow Leopard Developer release, that was sweet) and I'll probably sell my Mac. Why? Because if they do not apply to their customers needs (Yes, I am a customer) just like they do not apply to their developers needs (Yes, I am a developer), I see no reason to put my money in Apple. At least not their mobile section. Also their stock will drop like a brick (and it should), but it will probably not affect them.

On one hand, I have a really bad feeling about Apple's upcoming conference (And it WILL be held) on the other hand; 2010 will be exciting. Everyone feels the same about that, so I also have high hopes.

honest question, how much are 10" OLED panels?

From a slightly-educated point of view this would just destroy any reasonable price point for the device.

I've been hoping that wouldn't go that route. It'd make for an awkward interface, and look incredibly obsolete in two years.

Looking at the example of the Notion Ink Adam ... there's no difference in the interface. Instead of the device going dim from lack of use, it goes to grey scale/e-paper mode. Start using it again, and it goes back to color/LCD mode. The Adam also has a button for forcing the change (but it might be the same as the "standby"/"power" button on other Android devices). Apple could, instead, have it be application based (apps self-select for greyscale/e-paper mode vs color/LCD mode ... such as e-reader software choosing the former ... OR the color choices that an app makes causes the application framework library to select the mode for them). Or it could be something else. Or a little of all of the above. None of those implies that the UI has to be awkward or different from what either the iPhone or the Mac have now.

As for obsolete ... pretty much anything that gets released today will be obsolete in two years. Some might even argue the old axiom that all products are obsolete before they've even been released, the newer technology having already been developed ... and it's only the long arm of product development timelines that keeps this from being visible to the consumers. Whether it's the display technology, CPU, RAM footprint, storage footprint, or the communication radios ... whatever it is, the device that's released today will be obsolete in 2 years. Probably well before that.

Maybe that crazy Gizmodo rumor is true of a higher end tablet running Mac OSX!

I just don't see this happening. You'd think they would introduce OLED into their product lineup with the iPhone first. 3" OLED screens can be had MUCH MUCH cheaper than a 8-10" version.

OLED is crap - I've really heard nothing good about them from legitimate sources (aside from all the fanboy chatter about how AMAZING they are).

They use MORE power than equivalent LED backlit LCDs when displaying 'light' user interfaces. The only advantage they have in power consumption is when displaying very dark colors or black.

Colors degrade at different rates - blue is the first to go. Meaning color reproduction over time gets less and less accurate.

They essentially can't be used in sunlight. They get so washed out they are unreadable. I've heard this from many sources, most recently in reviews of the new Google Nexus. I once had an aftermarket car deck with an OLED screen and it was basically unusable if the sun was shining on it.

I think OLED is all hype and I also doubt Apple would use it given it's disadvantages and current level (or lack thereof) of refinement.

I guess that would make sense if apple really does intent to move 10 million of these somehow.

That was just a rumor though.

So much hype over a product category that has been a complete and utter failure for many years.

I don't really understand what the purpose of this Newton II is. What niche is it expected to fill?

Is it a really big iPhone for those fashionable folks with really baggy pants and giant pockets or is it a PC replacement for those who are keyboard phobic or who want to communicate r e a l l y s l o o o o o o w l y?

Wow... Apple really does have the ability to move the entire market....

nah, lots of companies do this. Lots will even go to multiple suppliers to ensure security of delivery in case of issues with one supplier. Supply Chain Logistics is a big part of these companies. Almost crucial to survival to get a good supply of key components.

Hahahah... That made me laugh - And I almost agree with you - but it appears that I have been sucked into the Apple vortex and want everything they make... I have clearly lost perspective!

I am just hoping that we will get closer to the electronic notepad (ala Star Trek) which will end up being the ultimate communications/note-taking/reader/portable device in the world... But if the rumours are true that they have come up with a new way to interface with it then maybe it won't be as slow as you think.....

The fact is that some in the know (yes you´ve seen the IKEA video ;)) are claiming the web 2.0 stuff should be in a 1024x600 size... so that fits about right for a 10.1'' display.:D

Two huge markets for this device I can tell you are doctors and students.

I'm a medical student, meaning this is a day 1 buy for me. Medical textbooks weigh about 5kg each and the entire medical world has been waiting for a decent device for reading patient records for the past 10 years.

marketing...

You know, it's funny. All this talk of the tablet. I mean the last refresh of the iMacs and such, we knew of the magic mouse and keyboard, but I don't remember any rumors of the 27" screen and only a little buzz of quad-core tech.

All this info is being feed to us by Steve on a spoon.

Bring on the 27th and put an end to all this hype and news stories!

Someone just has to whisper "Apple Tablet" and it gets media attention!

( Of course, post 27+ we'll have to listen to the anti-clamatic talk - this thing has been hyped up so much, they people are expecting the Earth - which won't be delivered, in version 1 )

I agree. I have a hard time, however, believing something made by Apple would permeate the medical industry. I feel like we'd be more likely to see this coming from some medical device company or someone already established in the industry - especially in the US where we have this massive medical industry bureaucracy and corporate structure controlling everything.

I think the normal LCD ones are those that are 'ridiculously priced' while the LED ones are 'ridiculously OVERpriced' :D

Whatever happens will be way over priced no matter what. Yet there'll still be geeks out there that will buy it with money they don't have. Thus further destroying our economy.

Wait a minute - are you saying Apple has developed technology to shrinkk people???? Or is it just that his desk chair is shaped like a really big spoon??

:D

Hope Aperture X is also announced!

Yaknow, after all this, it would be really funny if Apple didn't come out with a tablet after all, but simply stated on the 26th, that they think Tablets are still a waste of time.

I would be bummed, but I would also laugh a little.

I really want a tablet (or a slate or whatever) but I also really want Aperture X. I know I need Aperture X--the tablet is more of a want at this point.

I will be really disappointed if there is no Aperture X!

Coffee Table Tablet

...no shortage in 30" screens?
I want a 30" coffeetable tablet!

Actually, there's a huge shortage of 120" screens--can't be had anywhere at any price. The only reason I can think of is that Apple bought them all for a coffee table tablet.
