My personal guess

"Priced" low. Not low cost. Agree the "price" will be low if subsidized with a data plan and a cloud plan. Those plans will probably cost $40-60 a month.

I think you are spot-on - except for a tiny little bit.

I guess Apple will roll out the tablet with LTE-capable hardware and will bring it as a Verizon-exclusive. I just googled and found out, Verizon has some spots, where LTE is working.

As being a new technology you cannot only hype the Tablet as 'the next BIG THING', but you are also free to ask for ridiculous amounts for your data plan.

Apple will get the hefty subsidy, and Verizon will have a nice upfront of regular cash-flow for rolling out LTE in even more cities. Yeah, there will be whining and white spots in the beginning - but the more I think of it, the more it makes sense to drag thousands of people into a really expensive contract as long as you can have it exclusive. :D

I was just asking myself, if the USA had really rolled out nationwide 3G coverage, if there was not a device like the iPhone.

Apple wants to sell you macs. There is no firm rule it need be a device. It could be an "instance". That might raise margins. :)

If you live in China or India or Iraq, Iran, or most of Africa, you don't want your Mac to reside in ShangHai, Tehran, or most places there or near you. They want their Mac living in North Carolina and a tablet in their hand. :)

Tell them Rocketman sent you with the news.

You will note my past messages fixate on this. :D

Apple released on EDGE. We have NSA to thank for that! :D You will note my past messages fixate on this. :D 3G was a bridge to LTE. Here we go boys.

So there is an outside chance I agree with you 100%.

It's not a given. But the idea wouldn't be necessarily to be a cellphone - rather it would be to have ubiquitous internet connectivity. Wi-fi isn't always available, after all. Look at the Kindle - probably the main reason it broke ahead of the pack was built-in connectivity for downloading of books.

That's a good thought on the Kindle. But the connectivity of the Kindle is also pretty standard technology these days. According to the iSuppli folks, the wireless data module that the Kindle has is only about $40, and connects to Sprint's wireless data network.

Sprint, by the way, has been coming up as a potential carrier for the iPhone once the AT&T exclusivity contract runs out.

In the latest episode of Diggnation, co-host Alex Albrecht reveals under pressure from Kevin Rose that he has received information about Apple's much-rumored tablet computer, but acknowledges only that he was "shocked" to hear how low the device will be priced.
Maybe $600 for low-end version without phone capabilities (which favors an iPhone OS device)? Either that or a Mac OS X device around that price (I for one don't expect a Mac OS X device to be anywhere near as cheap).

Or maybe he recently read this. :D

Snarky tone and misspelled Apple product name aside, Apple IS waiting until pricing drops enough, not to buy components at the price they need, but until they can enter into an 18 month contract, the AVERAGE price of which falls into their model, with Apple FRONTING the funds to cover the vendor front costs.

Apple may be monomoniacial, but they are YOUR FRIEND who is that way.

Cash in bank on your behalf.

Bow and pray.

The benevolant dictator model built the SR-71 for god's sake!

A new product line from Apple with a shockingly low price? Is there any historical precedent for this? I can't think of one off the top of my head, while I can think of any number of items that were introduced with a price that was dropped significantly after a relatively short time. This is why I'm dubious about this rumor.

Actually, I seem to recall Airport Base Stations being 1/3 to 1/2 the price of everyone else's wireless access points when they were released. They also sold G4 towers with gigabit ethernet and DVD-R drives for the price of a DVD-R drive plus a gigabit-over-copper PCI card.

So yeah, Apple does occasionally price things remarkably low. Not often, and they certainly don't reduce prices as often or as quickly as most others.

Thanks for the correction, IndyGopher. This is one point on which I'm very happy to be proven wrong!

“Shockingly low” means $949 and with features you’d expect to pay $4k for

Then again, the original iPod Touch was pretty shockingly low for a handheld computer with that kind of storage/screen/specs.

And the original iPhone cost a lot less than certain lower-spec smartphones that were sold unsubsidized at the time of its release (some Nokias over $1000 for instance).

For that matter a MacBook now costs about 80% of what the same specs cost from Dell, and the 27” iMac costs the same as a Dell 30” display alone (both having 2560 pixels across).

I thought the iPhone @$200 subsidized was shockingly low.

"low" for me would be $600 or less unsubsidised.
"shockingly low" however is a different matter. He really emphasizes that it is going to be extremely low.
So for me thats less than $300 which means it'll have to be subsidised on some sort of data plan. I hope there are unsubsidised versions available without the data plan. My iPhone does fine for browsing when I'm away from my main computer. Just wifi in the tablet is fine

Full OSX, Full screen touch gesture/pinch/zoom etc, Usb and firewire,
a stand so it will sit upright and be able to be used as a desktop with
wireless mouse/kb (or wired), geforce, and under 800$. Not under
500$ though.

I really hope they don't subsidize it. I pay enough companies each month for internet.

I'm aware Apple has never done it before, but any possible way they sell this thing at a loss similar to xbox and playstation? It wouldn't surprise me if Apple really thinks the books/mags/apps will truly be revolutionary. 30% profit on all the content could go a long way.

As always, I take Tablet news with a pinch of salt. I really can't see why people are obsessed with it. Well I can, but I can't justify it.

As for pricing... believe it when I see it

Is that guy, with the jacket and blonde mohawk holding an unfamiliar PC netbook?
Or can that be an "apple tablet"?
The keyboard and aluminum looks exactly the same as the MacBook Pro.
And that actually pretty nice :) diggin the black front and thiness.
Who knows? Maybe this much rumored tablet may not be ready for a touchscreen at the moment ;D

Just pay close attention to it. It looks real familiar..
:apple:

.

If it's a choice between paying Apple up front or paying a service provider each month, I think most people would prefer the latter to defer expenses.

A tablet from Apple? I'd believe that.

A shockingly low price for a tablet? I'd believe that.

A shockingly low price for a tablet from Apple? I'm not sure I believe that.

jesus ***** ***** why am i not surprised to see this here.

hi guys, me again.

no.

apple doesn't sell cheap ****.

never will.

look at their business model, and look at their bank account.

why do people feel it necessary to say/perpetuate this stupid rumor that comes up EVERY SINGLE TIME a new product is rumored, and why do people continually believe it???????

A lot of news or rumors are retarded, and only exist to generate traffic. And a lot of people are retarded. That's the answer.

If its shockingly low then most probably its subsidized with a $50-$60 data plan...

i wish they combine data plans for iphone and the tablet(if this is true) and make it cheaper...

Shockingly low for Apple is probably under $999, considering none of their notebooks have gone under that price point in... ever? The last time I saw a notebook priced at $999 other than the new macbook, was the iBook G4. Of course, that's when I hopped on the Apple bandwagon. ;)

Also, front page article. Verizon and AT&T's temper tantrum between each other, page two.

They really have to think who is going to buy this. Would most current iPhone/smartphone users want to shell out on another monthly subscription and buy this tablet?

I don't think so. I can't see it being a subscription model. That leaves it with a buy-once, pay-upfront-in-full model - then you can buy extra content whenever you like from iTunes.

But what of the data plan? Maybe it will be Wi-Fi only. Maybe it will also contain 3G - but at a price (a monthly subscription).

If everyone already has an iPhone and a computer, what does this new device bring to the table?

They could lure people in on price but it would be suicide to bring it in too low. Remember, first it will be niche and expensive, version 2 will be mass market (but still reasonably premium pricing). So keep in mind realistic prices for 'low' before Apple ruins your dreams!
