... now I'll go post an over-confident prediction for the Massachusetts Senate race somewhere else. :)

I'm crossing fingers that the "cloud" will make better use of iDisk & the new streaming music company they just acquired. It would make sense and make MobileMe more attractive to new users.

If it ran full OSX, I'd pay $700. If it was a souped up version of the iPhone OS, $400 able to run a mix of iPhone apps & some OSX apps, but likely not all. At that point, get an Air. Both of these would be subsidized cost I think since there is no way it would be priced any less than an unlocked iPhone.

I'd also like the data to be included with my frickin iPhone data plan but that isn't likely so I'd tack on another $15/month for 3G for existing iPhone users :).

to much beer

If you knew what beer they are drinking, you'll better understand why they are saying these things ;-) It's "Duvel" (= devil) and I can guarantee you it's very good and surprisingly heavy stuff!

Waaaay off topic, but boy, the SR-71 could never be classed as 'beautiful'. Maybe it was 'awesome', 'cool' but its got a look only its mother would love.

Now Concorde on the other hand...now thats what you'd call beauty and art in a mechanical form...

HA. I knew i had 4 kids - that must be the one i lost!

I will not deny the Concorde is beautiful - my biggest regret in aviation life is that i will never get to fly on it (ok, there are others, but still....).

But seeing them both at the Udvar-Hazy 2 years ago - it was the SR-71 that i stayed with the longest, that i wanted to touch and climb into.... but heck, that is the one i had the poster of on my wall too!

And I still want a shockingly low priced 7" tablet! Just to say on topic.

Two plans??

Does this mean I have to have a AT&T Plan and a verizon plan if I want both the Tablet and the iPhone??

here's an interesting theory for the 'shockingly' low price rumor:

server side processing for EVERYTHING

essentially the tablet is just a connected screen. a multitouch, wifi &/or LTE connected screen.

apple save tons of money by not having to include insane hardware/specs, which has the added benefit of making the device smaller/lighter. perhaps even thinner than the macbook air.

the os it runs is extremely similar to that google chrome os. all video processing is done server side (1080p smooth playback) and anything you buy, minus a small hardware cache, is stored on the servers.

basically the strategy is to sell a really cheap device that a lot people can afford, which helps with adoption, then they get you on the services and content with subscriptions, fees, etc.

the device will not be marketed as a computer, but more of a 'e-book/web tablet/magic newspaper'-type thing.

if the rumor is true, that's one way i think that they could pull it off.

I'm glad you thought of it.

Define 'shockingly low'

With its screen size and - I assume - with a relatively slow processor speed, this multi-touch wonder will indirectly compete with netbooks, portable media players; and devices like the JooJoo (?) and Kindle. In this sense, the pricing is tricky. Of course, people's basic mindset is that if Apple releases a netbook-sized device, it must be a little computer.

Without a full OS X (which I doubt this device will feature), the 600$ mark seems to me as slightly lower than reasonable. During these speculations, I cannot put a price on a non-existent device. But for what I have in mind, 500$ would be 'shockingly low'.

Here, in the UK, you can buy the iPhone 3GS on a 'Pay-As-You-Go' pre-paid card for £440. That is about 700$ and it includes 15% value added tax. So, the 3GS costs 600$. If Apple can bring out a device that can remain in the same price range, they would really surprise me - in a 'shocking' way.

Perhaps, we shouldn't forget who the 'shockingly low' statement is from. Frankly, the man is loaded and has a MacBook Air. For him, 800$ can be shockingly low.

Personally, it would only make sense if this device would be priced between the iPhone 3GS and the MacBook (being much closer to the MacBook). I hope and I suspect that it will be available without any network contract too. If networks cannot support the iPhones properly, what's the guarantee that they will be able to provide the speed for this device? Magazines, larger game softwares, basic graphic applications are a step up from little iPhone apps.

Like kemkraft said, "Shockingly low" is different for Apple standards than say, something WalMart would sell. Yes, we're surprised at how low WalMart can sell their netbooks, PCs, etc. But never shocked- that's their spiel, low prices.

But if Apple dropped something to what would otherwise be a "reasonable" price, that would be shocking. Like a $700 Pro or something. Not a shockingly low price for a computer, but a shockingly low price for an Apple.

a new trend

It would seem fitting, I'd say <$300 and Mac OS and I'm good.Do you want a special shoes?ugg bootsowners say that their boots are amazingly comfortable. It turns out that there is a good reason for that.

what is cheap?
in terms of apple something priced lower then 1000 is cheap and entry level
i dont start to argue about if a tablet would be useful at all
but thats just why i for example do not buy a iPhone , i rarely use a mobile phone , mine is usually in the glovebox of my car for emergencies , or its on the charger at home , i guess i have since i have mobile phones send 3 or 4 text`s
(had my first mobile phone in the 90`s one of these big brick size things )
but then i i would live in usa i would have one too ..maybe ,,,as they are loads cheaper there and cheaper to use , europe gets every gadget but has to pay significantly more
so maybe apple brings a tablet for $400 with top hardware but that will then sell for £499 in the uk with the slowest possible hardware ,
seen it al before with the mac mini , in us a affordable small computer ,in the uk heavily overpriced

I like both

I will not deny the Concorde is beautiful...

The SR-71 and the Concorde are both beautiful, in their own way. I like the Concorde, but I fixate on the SR-71 too. There's one on display at Beale AFB in California, outside near the hangars and runway, which I've visited a couple times. It's interesting to be able to walk up to it, bang on it, get hands-on with it, and there's nobody around to stop you--Beale doesn't have a lot of people walking around outside--though you have to assume the people in the flight tower nearby are watching you the whole time, especially considering that just on the other side of a chainlink fence you can walk up to, they sometimes keep some active-duty converted U-2s, or TR-1s (I didn't check out the details to tell which).

On-topic: If "shockingly low" turns out to be true, that would be in the range of $199-$299.

jesus ***** ***** why am i not surprised to see this here.

hi guys, me again.

no.

apple doesn't sell cheap ****.

never will.

look at their business model, and look at their bank account.

why do people feel it necessary to say/perpetuate this stupid rumor that comes up EVERY SINGLE TIME a new product is rumored, and why do people continually believe it???????

Well, they did throw users a bone with a low price on Snow Leopard....

AT&T is already taking a beating with all the iPhones on their network and they're complaining about all the data usage, at this point in time I can't see them throwing a tablet onto their network as well..

Apple isn't married to AT&T. Verizon is a possibility for this thing.

Maybe it's the Magic Slate?

What if the "shockingly low price" is for the rumored "Magic Slate"? I would guess that it would be considerably cheaper than a full-fledged tablet if it's sole purpose is an alternative input device.

No, that wouldn't be "shockingly" low. Just low. No one is shocked when an input device doesn't cost a lot.

I have been hearing the same thing lately about the price.

Yes, but did Alex know that it was an input device? Or did he assume that it was a true tablet for the price of an input device?

Then again, these are all suppositions on top of suppositions, so who knows anything at this point.

High end luxury?

Apple makes high end luxury items which means they cannot have a shockingly low price.

Hmm...so I guess a TOOL that I run my entire business on in the film music business is considered a luxury? I NEED high end!
