To get great battery life with a much smaller thinner lighter battery than the kind they put in laptops. A C2D in an iPod Touch would last what? 5 minutes? And burn your hand.

And how do you know that?

Except for the desktop GUI eye-candy stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if huge portions of SL were developed for ARM first, then ported to x86. It turned out that Mac OS X ran on a lot more CPUs than Apple first let on about, the same is probably true of SL. An iPhone in the near future might well be running full SL, except with the iPhone UIKit GUI wrapped on top of it instead of the Cocoa desktop.

SL runs fine on an ARM.

I'm still not sure of the use for this rumored device. Vertical markets and possibly artists aside what would it be really good for? I'm cool with no keyboard on my iphone because room is limited and i prefer extra screen space, but on a mid size device i'd prefer some keys like a netbook kind of thing. I can type faster than I can write and if the device is big enough why not have some real keys?

Maybe if it could act as a secondary display for my Mac Pro via wifi? or a large input device for drawing?

Have you actually used a ~10" netbook's keyboard? Its not just cramped, it's unusable in all the incarnations I've tried.

...In the end with this device you're not going to have a truly portable device nor are you going to have a device that is capable of doing anything a proper computer would do, and here I include mere document editing... a virtual keyboard that takes up 80% of the screen just isn't going to pull it off I'm afraid...

...I would have no problem with a 10" tablet running the iPhone OS if it was part of a netbook running OS X with a twisting display, but on its own, it's pointless.

To you, maybe - but to many others, it could very well become a great hit. One person's idea of portability may differ from yours. For example, something can indeed be portable even if it doesn't fit in your pocket.

Seriously?...we need yet another touch device?...for what?

If i have an iPhone/iPod Touch why do i buy this again?

You don't ... until you've had a chance to actually see what the thing will do. If you're satisfied with your gadget repertoire, fine. We can both compare functionality and utility of the iPod Touch and the new device someday at Starbucks together. My treat.

My first question is: Is the Tablet going to be a dumbed down device like iPhone or a full on computer with OSX 10.6 with a finder and access to files?

Nobody knows yet for sure. I hope it's more the latter, equipped with as powerful a processor possible while still maintaining some respectable battery life.

the m1710 is a kickass machine

I miss it sometimes. I sold mine to a friend whose own desktop had grown tired and died. Sale proceeds are helping to fund my Apple gadget / upgrade budget. :D

One thing for sure is that this kind of devices would never be able to replace netbooks, as one of the top requests (or THE top request, more often than not) from the netbook customers is better keyboards. Just imagine how they would react to virtual keyboards, or the necessity of carrying around separate bluetooth wireless keyboards or something of that sort. It would never fly.

So, I assume that this would be for a completely different market. I'm not sure what exactly it is, though.

Not surprising, since I believe your premises are somewhat flawed. Though you are correct about the request for better keyboards, you conveniently left out the part that Netbook manufacturers have complied with these requests on the whole. 92% of full, normal keyboard size is just about right for most. The DELL Mini 10v is an example of such a device. (Oh, and BTW, you can install Mac OS X on it as well). The tablet may offer utility comparable to Netbooks (features we just don't know yet), but it won't be a Netbook.

This new device seems small enough to carry in a small case with an Apple BT keyboard if one were so inclined. For those who weren't (inclined), I suspect the virtual keyboard would be a better experience than one on the iPhone or iPod Touch's smaller screen. It's a subjective experience, so mine will differ from others. I can't wait to let you know for sure. :apple:

this rumor should be on page two because it seems kinda strange if true....

Why? Because you don't want precious page 1 real estate compromised with a highly anticipated Apple product you care nothing for?

Whatever. People here would credit Apple with the invention of the wheel if they could. The MP3 player market wasn't as large as it became after Apple entered it, but it was still bigger than the tablet PC market is today.
Whatever indeed. I could care less who invented something; all that matters is that successful products arrive.
If MP3 players weren't succesful why did the music companies go after them?
Well, they didn't really, if by MP3 players you mean hardware devices. They went after Napster obviously, but I don't think they really cared about the Rio Karma or the MP Man.

The reason I brought the iPod up is because it's the perfect device for demonstrating Apple's ability to get people to buy something they didn't think they needed. Apple will need that kind of persuasive product to succeed in a sector that has had no must-have products - like the MP3 player market pre-iPod.

Reading books on a backlit screen? Ugh.

I love my Kindle. Its a reading experience SO much like a book with a number of important benefits (Wireless shopping, Text-Speech, Searches, Bookmarks/annotations etc). Its the first electronic device that has been able to largely replace books for me.

I thought when Kindle came out with an iPhone application that it was ridiculous. Who'd read a book on an iPhone when they had a Kindle? Who'd read a book on a device that small period?

But you know what? I've come to love my iPhone Kindle App. When traveling, the lighting is not alwas great and the iPhone is terrific for reading in dim light. The book lights for the Kindle are just not very good. Plus two less devices to carry. So don't knock a backlit reading device til you've tried it.

That said, I've owned Tablets before. Wonderful devices if done well. But even with good speech-text, and handwriting recognition they are limited for general use without a good keyboard. Thats why the HP TC1100 was my all time favorite tablet - you could use it as a pure tablet, or as a notebook if you attached the keyboard. The so called "convertible" notebooks were just too bgg an heavy, and the pure tablets either had no keyboard at all or one that was little more than a joke.

I'll be very interested to see what Apple will come up with. Though I'm not very optimistic it will be much more than a hyperthyroid iPhone if its not intel based. If it can't replace a notebook, its much less interesting to me, (and many netbooks these says are capable of doing that).

Have you actually used a ~10" netbook's keyboard? Its not just cramped, it's unusable in all the incarnations I've tried.

Weird. I have average sized hands for a male so not small by any means and I have zero problem typing as fast on my wifes Lenovo 10" netbook or the HP mini 10 I tried out. I wouldnt call a 10" netbooks keyboard "unusable". Maybe "tougher" to type on than a 13" keyboard for those with bigger hands, but not unusable.

I believe the following features would make this a potentially "killer" device:

  1. Built-in VOIP interoperability for broadband phone
  2. Built-in 3G/4G transmitter for on-the-go internet connectivity
  3. Built-in iChat video chatting
  4. Tight integration with a new AppleTV/DVR product
  5. Built-in cellular calling via bluetooth headset or speakerphone
  6. Accurate, real-time handwriting recognition for note-taking
  7. Mobile gaming platform

I'm sure there's a bunch of other things that could be added that I haven't thought of, but this could be a great convergence device. The only thing I can't get past is the fact that with a 10" screen, we're looking at a somewhat clunky form factor. And what about the keyboard?

I am confident Apple will shock us with something completely unexpected and fantastic.

something overlooked in the posts in this thread is that Apple took all the MB's and made them MBP's...save for the white one. It seems fairly clear to me that the MB as we know it will be a more tablet-centric device...the MBP's will be lappys and the MBA will be what it is.

If it runs OSX, can host iTunes and be my main computer, I'm sold. My last Mac was a MBP, while it was a beautiful machine, i didn't need the capability and processing power anymore. These days my iPhone 3GS is my computer. Phone, email, IM, text in my pocket.

I believe we will see these come to fruition. I believe these will be the new MB's. I believe they have been conceived slowly over time as tablets havent done well and Apple are rethinking every detail to get it right.

As for 3G, I hope they make it so any cell provider can add their card and subsidize it. I am happy with AT&T and would get the 3G data plan with AT&T for this device...I wouldn't go to another carrier for it. I believe apple will do this and have LTE built into it so that other carriers can have the device once they go to LTE. Its better for them not to be tied to any network anyway IMO

Thats all I got

Yeah, I bet that monster weighs at least four pounds.

It should be under 2 pounds to be interesting, preferably half the weight of an Air or less. Any more, and it won't be sufficiently more carry-able than a netbook.

How much does just the lid of a MacBook Air weigh? Shrink to 10". Add what's left to the weight of an iPod Touch.

I could see that happening...I don't know if this thing will end up running a full version of OS X or its mobile counterpart but it seems to me like Apple could brand this simply as a macbook. However it seems to me like this thing would need a real keyboard and a multitude of ports to actually replace the whitebook and I just don't see that happening with this "tablet".

If this is device will be announced this fall we shall see leaked images or fake images soon enough.

The Rio was a success, just not by modern standards. It was ahead of its time. The record industry sued the makers and lost.

How mercenary is your attitude? I don't care who invented it, just who marketed it best? Its clear that Apple's fans don't really appreciate innovation, just the company that made the product that looks best. Without the Rio and the products like it, there would be no iPod.

I think it would be cool to have this device as a touch screen notebook/drawing tablet that hooks up to your iMac. That would be sweet. :D

But that may seem like too much to ask for. :(

EDIT: I edited my grammar and for some reason my post got duplicated. Sorry about that. How do you delete a post anyway?

The Rio was a success, just not by modern standards.

What does that even mean? It was an abject failure given that we know now the market for pocketable MP3 players is vast, but it tapped only a tiny fraction of that market - because it wasn't good enough.

lol, where did I specify marketing? I said "all that matters is that successful products arrive." In fact, I appreciate innovation a great deal; I appreciated the iPod because it was extremely innovative. That's why it succeeded while no one else has come close.

Oh, and seriously, who isn't mercenary? I buy (some) Apple stuff because I think it's the best and it will benefit *me* to own it. I'm just as mercenary a purchaser as Apple is a vendor; if you think Apple isn't then I gotta bridge to sell ya.

Move two windows or photos at the same time (you can't yet)

Imagine being able to move more than one screen element at the same time. Resolution independence finally implemented? Unlimited screen real-estate and the best features of the iPhone and latest trackpads. How many have instinctually tried to scroll a web page on their latest generation MacBook Pro?

Minority Report is here my friends. And no-one need assume the entire device will be inflexible physically. The triangular towers that blanket many cities are a new type of broadband network. I predict this device will use these to receive audio / video data on the go (including feature-films) and digital television.

Has anyone liked the idea of running three iPhone applications on the same screen? Another great possibility.

Here's to the future,

re: What's the point of this?

I can think of quite a few points to a device like this. For starters, it's going to appeal to artists. They'd much rather have a computer that feels more like an easel to draw/paint on than a hinged laptop configuration.

It's also going to (like pen computing devices before it) make sense to people who do a lot of interaction with their PC while standing up and walking around. That would include everyone from doctors walking around and visiting with patients to factory shop floor workers who might be counting inventory or who knows what else? Teachers might find it useful while lecturing in a classroom. A traditional desktop or laptop PC requires you "hide behind the screen" while using it, and that's not what you want to do much of while you have an audience listening to you.

I suspect, too, it will appeal to those stuck in a hospital bed (Hmm... so why again did Jobs do a lot of work on this lately?). When you're lying down, it's easier to deal with a "slab" you pick up and hold at whatever angle you like, and tap on things to work with them. Actually typing on a keyboard requires you sit upright and put the machine in your lap or something - and gets uncomfortable after a while in a bed.

It'll probably be a big hit with people who aren't good typists, for use around the house -- and if they're smart about it, they'll design it with a magnetic back, so you can slap it up on your fridge or something and have it stick there.

What exactly is the point of this...?

Project Natal is Minority report in a nutshell...this device is just like an all in one media remote/computer. The touchscreen keyboard might be extremely awkward at that size but this device has the potential to be amazing.

I also got a feeling this might run a hybrid version of OS X...something more featured like snow leopard and the whole screen has the features of the new trackpads minus the clicking part which would be done with just tapping.

It seems to be heading for a January release, but I wonder if we'll get an announcement in September or October. That's usually when the laptops are refreshed but they already did that.

I think this will be an epic fail, well not epic as there are always people who will buy anything, but for most not relevant.

Here are the three scenarios im in, and sure most people are too.

1) On the move, at work, needing to do some proper mobile work and i use my laptop.

2) At home/work maybe, using a desktop.

3) More recently, been using my iPhone which fits perfectly into my pocket for checking email, normal surfing and lesiure etc.

I dont see this tablet fitting in anywhere. If i need to something my iphone cant do (which is not a lot really), i will use my laptop. Why would i carry around a tablet.

Probably for the average user that can't afford a laptop. Especially with the economy and all. Laptops are very spendy these days. Average user meaning email, web and music with normal sized screen. Like my mom for instance. She doesn't do anything else and I know a lot of people like that.
