I'd buy it. As long as it didn't look like that mock up.

I'm very much in the market for a mac tablet/notebook. I can't justfy the cost of a MacBook as I don't really need that kind of power while out and about.

But something with more processing power and storage than the iPhone can provide, capable of running iMovie for instance.... I'd be first in the queue.

Is THIS going to be branded as the new Macbook? I originally assumed that Apple would push the Macbook brand on some new sub/small notebook, but if this is the case I don't really see the connection. I could be wrong, but this idea doesn't correspond to "Macbook" for me yet.

Exactly right...(about people who buy ipod touch for watching video's browsing the web, and reading e-books (which i suspect itunes will soon support). people who like to sit around the house and have this recreational device in their laps while they sit and have a coffee or something (next to a fire). Or with an app store involved..it could be used for soooo many things. Teachers at schools, news systems, etc...this is like all about software dude. it is future proof...steve jobs is a genius.

Sources now indicate, however, that Jobs is satisfied with current design of the device and the company is moving quickly toward a release in the first quarter of 2010.
Macworld 2010 would have been a great time for an announcement! But that won't happen.

And we know that "first quarter" means "the last weekday of the first quarter" anyway.

Yes, there is a market

Indeed. Most on here salivate after it because it is new and sexy tech. Have they thought about what they'd actually do with it?

Too big to take on the bus, can't imagine playing games on it - how are you supposed to hold it and be able to touch all areas of the screen? I can imagine one-handed holding getting rather tiring!

I'm continually surprised by those who claim there is no practical use for this kind of product. Just at a baseline this thing has to appeal to students. Online, easy access to text books, class notes, video, audio lecture recording, sketching, etc. Then think businesses where carrying around a full-fledged laptop is cumbersome but a thin tablet would work great for light typing/data-entry (like me in healthcare). Add bluetooth keyboard capability and video out and you have everything you need for most business operations in the field in a form factor that is much easier to use than either a smartphone or a laptop.

I can see the future threads already:
"Help! I dropped my iTablet in the fire…"
"Spilt coffee over my iTablet — will Apple replace it?"
"Oh noes. Poor Apple quality. My iTablet melted next to the fire."

etc. ;)

oooh i want sooo bad. too bad all my money is spoken for right now other wise id stand in line to get one. there has got to be some killer new feature in the OS or something to make it worth while. i mean, a touch screen computer in its self is pretty cool, but just running regular OS X? idk...

but needless to say, as soon as SJ reveals it, ill be so spellbound and salivating until i get one.:p

I bet Apple will use CES to debut it if it's not an Apple campus event.

not sure

Not sure if I'd jump on the bandwagon just yet. I'd like to see the specs and test it at the Apple store...

What is it for?

iPhone/iPod Touch = Small
MB/MBP = Good size

Who wants something too big for a pocket? If you are going to carry a bag, use your MB/MBP.

Can someone explain how it fits in and who the target market is?

I'd buy it simply because I'm expecting it to basically be a giant iPod Touch. Translation? A worthwhile, though short on battery life, e-reader that would support ebooks from all the largest stores. Plus it would have the benefit of being a multitouch web browser.

I loved my iPod Touch but it was simply too small for me. I love the idea of a multitouch device, especially one I can feel comfortable holding in my ridiculously large meat hooks.

Granted, if it turns out to not support App Store apps it loses its appeal to me but so it goes.

Friendly reminder: The iPhone was introduced at $600. For those who don't wish to suffer from purchasing the initial offering, watching as the price dramatically decreases, the wait will be long and salivatory. I advise thee to prepare thy gums for the flow of lusty juices.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

Where's the keyboard. I pray there isn't a huge virtual keyboard that pops up on that gigantic 10 inch screen. Hopefully a cool dock can be bought and it will hook into apples wireless keyboard and mouse. I can only hope.

blah, .... If Steve Jobs is so heavily involved in the design it means it's going to be nice looking and sleek.

But it woun't have a SD card slot, no USB (maybe a iPod dock connector), a proprietory charger, no video out, no way to add a keyboard, no stylus, in short: no features. But it will be expensive.

Anyway, I want one.

As long as it has a USB port and is reasonably powerful, I think I'll buy one.

I think there is a market for a "media tablet." Personally, I would much rather take this on vacation over my 15-inch laptop. It would be easier to watch movies/play games/send emails while traveling. And if it had a USB port, it would be the dream of a traveling photographer. No more portable HDD's, a sleek little device to show clients rough estimates of what a certain photo would look like... Granted, it would be difficult/impossible to edit the photos on the road with a similar touch interface, but that's not the point.

Or imagine if Apple allowed people to use it as a USB screen for their notebook or desktop computers... That would be fantastic.

The only downside I see is porn. I shudder to think what "sticky fingers" would do to such a beautiful touch screen.

People who buy the iPod Touch and mainly use it for web browsing, book reading, and watching movies.

If those are your 3 main iPod uses, this thing would be WAY better for you than an iPod.

I suspect there's a lot of folks like that. Who is buying all those Kindles? Might this catch their eye instead since it does all that and more?

Except now you have a device that's too big to fit in your pocket. I don't care if it's better than my iPhone for browsing, book reading, and watching movies because it functions very well for those activities while I'm on-the-go (if I'm making plans to do the above functions, I'm grabbing my MacBook). You want me to buy a 10" iPod Touch? No way.

If this device will be running OS 10.6, with about a 10" touchscreen, I'll buy one. I have no use for a suped-up iPod Touch, but I'd spend my money in a hot minute for a touchscreen Netbook/Macbook.

This is a device where I envision computing meeting full touch functionality. Give me that, in a size where Touchscreens are more affordable, great. As technology improves, we'll see bigger screens.
