i think this is brilliant marketing on apple's part.
Anyone who was going to return their iphone because they were unsatisfied with reception was going to have to get a different phone. Then they realize that all the other possible phones they could get exhibit the same behavior and they realize that it's not a problem exclusive to the iphone, but it is one that all phones share.

Apple's basically just proving that anyone who switches to the Droid X from their iPhone hoping for better antenna function is going to be disappointed.

So why didn't they have that problem with their 3G or 3GS?

Every phone, if you touch the right spot. Holding the phone in the way showed by the droid x videos is not different from touching the known spot on the iPhone 4.
Actually, is easier to grip the Droid X in that way than put your finger on the spot in the iPhone 4

Very interesting point of view. So basically YouTube videos counts ONLY when you have to bash Apple, otherwise they are unbelievable ...
Very strange people on this forum ...

Exactly!

It is very very easy to avoid touching that spot, if you know it.

Are you really comparing one single phone, on 5 markets, with 30 devices sold worldwide ???
No, you can't be that ingenuous .... or just a fandroid ?

736000 if you are looking at new sales. The other 77% are just repeat business right? Not really moving the needle on market share.

What's wrong with everyone? If Apple just said that "every other phone has this kind of issues to some extent", they'd be asking for factual data. No there it is, and they accuse Apple of "pointing fingers". Heck, when they expect you to be perfect it's impossible to please everyone. Truth speaks for irself; there isn't this much hype about any other phone. So much for the "iPhone Killers".

I'm not sure anyone was asking about other phones except Jobs, right?

Wow, Im surprised to see so many people burnt up over Apple having a go at the other manufacturers.

It's nothing new.

For years upon years Apple stood their PowerPC Macs against Wintel boxes to show off how much better the Mac was. There was nothing tongue in cheek with that. It was just hard comparison. Same thing here. Only this time showing disadvantages rather than advantages.

Who ares. Buy the phone. Enjoy the phone. Don't let all the media people suck you into the whole attempt to bring Apple down a few notches coz it ain't going to work. People only try to bring you down if you're up higher than them ;)

simply put, it's a very exciting time to not be completely under apple's marketing spell / a diehard apple fanboy. there are so many more interesting, affordable and in most cases stronger options out there right now other than apple's products.

wow apple, these is a Steve Jobs move, not an apple one, pointing fingers around Cellphone makers doesn't work
Yes the cellphones have a deathgrip, i tried to do it with an old Sony Ericsson i have and i got to drop one or two bars out of 5 holding it really stong with two hands almost covering 80% of the screen

Droid fanboys are a weird bunch. They lose bars but complain about the iphone. And who is getting a free bumper?

The droid will be history in 5 years like the razor is now. The iphone will still be with us.

What's the message with all these videos? Is Apple trying to say that iPhone 4 is just as bad as their competitors so therefore might as as well just buy iPhone 4 anyway? What happened to Think Different? Is it now Think Same?

Public relations are easy when you are the underdog but now that Apple is a very big company is finding hard to sell that old image. I find rather childish they way Apple is trying to promote iPhone 4. Hopefully they would do a bettor job for iPhone 5.

Or how the iMac is no longer the iconic computer it was around 1999-2000?

I have no doubt Android will still be around in 5 years, the Droid X and iPhone 4 won't be. Your post doesn't make much sense. The iPhone brand will still be around, iOS will still be around, Android brand and OS will still be around.

Lol, I manage to make my G502 Sony Ericsson drop one bar too holding it just like that.

Ah - but what happens to the original phones of the 77%?

A redundant 3G is still fetching close to £200 - about 40% of its value 2 years ago - which is a strong set of residuals.

These phones end up in the hands of new customers and market share of IOS users/itunes subscribers/app store customers increases.

As for this video - It makes sense to show that the only unique weak spot on the ip4 is easily avoided.

No way. The droid will be replaced with another gimmick in a few years. The iphone will still be with us.

Wow,Apple pointing figures at other competitors? The issue with Apple is that when touched "incorrectly" it drops calls and it just degrades the signal on other phones.

We have 2 droid x phones, could not replicate this even using same grip the video demonstrates. Even with super Mario world running on home screen while talking to mother in law in the hilton hotel elevator, unfortunately.

Directly comparing the iPhone to other phones is ****ing pathetic. Shame on you Apple.
Yeah. "All products suck, ours included" is a message that's so many kinds of wrong. Pathetic is just the tip of the iceberg.

Hi, I'm Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota. You may have heard of the problems with sticky gas pedal on some of our cars. I could say I'm deeply sorry... but I won't. Instead I will demonstrate that other cars have sticky gas pedals too.

In this first video we see an Audi A6. Watch what happens when our test driver Billy releases the gas pedal now... see? The car continues to accelerate, and there you see it going straight off the road and into that large oak tree. RIP, Billy.

Now in this second video we will demonstrate the Nissan Murano. That's a big, sturdy SUV. You'd perhaps think that it has a very robust accelerator pedal design, right? Wrong. Watch how our test driver completely loses control of the car and plows straight into that group of pedestrians. I think that was a group of school children. You don't want a car that kills children, do you?

So, in summary I would like to say that many cars suffer from this problem and we hope that this makes you feel better about buying cars, especially Toyotas. We look forward to your business now that confidence has been restored. Thank you.

Apple didn't knew about this fact because they where testing it using a case (the fake 3Gs one). Remember the Gizmodo incident?

Sure. They spent hundreds of millions on advanced testing facilities like this one in order to get an absolutely clean signal...

...but they left the fake 3GS case on because there was a one in a trillion chance that a photographer would barge in and take pictures of the phone inside this room.

maybe they should have tested the final product in the real world? like everyone else does?

Hilarious video. You pretty much have to have monster sized hands to do that to the Droid X. Easier to blame everyone else than admitting you have a problem I guess. :)

These smothering videos are getting a bit silly. Okay Apple... WE GET IT! Even though what you're demonstrating is a completely different phenomenon (smothering as opposed to 'shorting' or 'bridging').

Give it up Apple. What are you trying to say? That your product is as crappy as everyone else's? That is a pathetic move. How about you just say you used the same flawed design as others. Then, show us with iPhone5 that you fixed and are now better than others.

Really, this is sad. Told you Jobs was obsessive and crazy. First MASSIVE mistake for Apple in a while -- the design flaw + the handling of it.
