assuming 15M iPad1s being sold until now (from Wiki) ... and 40M iPads being sold in 2011 (iPad1 and 2) ... that's roughly 50M iPads since introduction.

If you consider North America and EU being roughly 1B people and 70% of iPads being sold within those regions ... that means 35M iPads will be sold to area of 1B people.

That works out to roughly 1 iPad per 30 people (or 3.33% of the total population).

I'm actually shocked that a non-essential item can get adopted so fast, especially for a luxury item, as it can't replace a TV, laptop/desktop or a mobile phone.

Especially at a relatively high price point (379€ for the outgoing model) ... and most purchasers not opting for a contact-based reduction in up-front cost.

Shocking and interesting at the same time.

quantify that 99.99% number? Didn't think so. Apple markets the crap out of specific features, therefore people look for those specific features.

What's a whole tablet segment? As opposed to half a tablet segment? Or how about 99.99% of the segment? Segmentation.. arrrrgh!

Giving you a dose of your own generalized Apple bashing.

Right now Apple IS the tablet market. Percentage doesn't matter, nobody can hold up a 100% when the copy cats arrive.

Clearly in the lead and staying there for quite a while, thank you!!

Actually, it would be nice to see an equivalent to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The endowment of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation stands at $33.5B, it would be nice to see a rival from Apple.

Why don't you troll engadget and leave this for the rest of us, trolldroid?

Why?

Many things would be nice.

Nobody knows if there are anonymous donations from Apple, Jobs etc..
or they give away free product to schools in need etc. etc.

Maybe they opt not to have public displays of charity?

Charity is another side business that takes time and people. They may not want to be in that business.

Hear hear .

I doubt Apple will get anywhere near 40m units sold in 2011, but your posting is spot on , and puts things into perspective .

How are they targeting IP2 sales for 2010?
Should be 2011 I assume.

Instead of the Retna display they will begin shipping models with the Retro display. ;)

Yes, you're probably right - video will look better w/ a black bezel... however, I agree with v66jack and feel people will want something different than their current iOS devices. Also, isn't the white color (at least in iDevices) usually associated with a higher-end product?

I want to see one in person but in the pictures I do like the white ones. I find that funny because I'm not a fan of the white iPhone 4s. Even so I'll most likely get a black iPad as I primarily want it to show off my photography.

was the prior post about the macbook screen resolution being the same as the iPad correct. If it is then there is no reason that the retina display should be an issue.

Not everyone buys an iPad to match their coat!

Video will look better with a black surround. The only real choice is what colour smart cover to get!

I fully agree Black would be the only way to go. I think the White bezel would washout the screen.

I can believe it, I think people and businesses are finding all new applications for this thing (ah, I mean post-PC device :)). I just love how things have flipped, Apple is now the cheapest tablet and they have the best software selection, and (as always) the best piece of hardware and OS in the market. I just hope that the competition doesn't fall too far behind, they need to stay in the shadow just enough to keep the anti-trust people away :)

If it had retina, that number would be a lot more. I don't think they could've handled it.

Not so sure about that. The more I think about retina display, the more I think that it was Apple's way of giving phone users more display real estate without increasing the form factor size. Apple knows that if they go much bigger in form factor, they will lose sales.

I'm using an HTC Inspire with a 4.3" screen while biding my time for the iPhone 5. The Inspire is on the outer edge of too big for me, and many users would think it is too big. The screen resolution is slightly less than iPhone 4, but the screen itself is much larger.

For the iPad, the screen is already big, so retina is not that important.

As others have mentioned, Apple can afford to sell cheap because they have huge economies of scale thanks to the iPhone (i.e., they get a huge volume discount from parts manufacturers) and they have a post-sales revenue stream from the App Store. Motorola/Samsung/HTC/etc. don't get any money after the initial sales. Google makes all of the app money, although that revenue stream isn't that big compared to the App Store.

Slight thread hijack: I recently got an Android phone, and I have to say that the Marketplace is a mess compared to the App Store. Finding an app is difficult (ironic for a search company) and you're always suspicious about the app itself (malware, cheap knockoff etc). No wonder AppBrain is so popular. Also, there's a weird psychological barrier to buying apps. It's like you feel that since Android is free all the apps should be free too. Also, for Apple App Store, they've already got your credit card number, so buying an app is just a click away.

I still don't need a big iPod touch. I want a tablet computer and I want it to be customizable. Waiting for the Honeycomb tabs to get the kinks out and I will grab one of those.
