Hear hear .

I doubt Apple will get anywhere near 40m units sold in 2011, but your posting is spot on , and puts things into perspective .

There's a very good chance ipad sales in calendar year 2011 will be over 45m.

A lot of buyers are still uncertain of which tablet offers the best bang for the buck. So that number maybe hard to reach if consumers are persuaded by discounts from other company's.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I honestly think they will outsell these numbers. For all the complaining the reality is iPad 2 is a significant upgrade. Many current owners will update, especially as iPad 2 starts to circulate and people take note of the improvements.

Then you have people like me that have been waiting for iPad 2. The 2 is very compelling and if it really has 512MB of RAM, is what many if us where waiting for. I could see Apple easily selling 20 million a quarter world wide if they can keep production up. Interestingly I wonder if Samsung can keep up CPU production wise, Apple already takes a good portion of Samsungs foundry business.

IPad 2 does give me a warm fuzzy feeling. The performance boost while maintaining battery lifetime will be very attractive.

First iPad for me... I'm gettin'!

Wish they had a 128GB, but I'm getting after it with the iPad 2. Mirror mode is going to be great, and I'll truly utilize this thing for the net, work, and some fun. I hope Microsoft unleashes a great native mobile application for the iOS that runs Word, PPT, and Excel smoothly. I true Microsoft Office for the iPad along with Mirror Mode would be wonderful for my travel needs for work.

I'm guessing this huge production will curtail the eBay sales. So much for trying to make a buck or three. :(

We own an iPad 1...got it from work. However, even the 2.0 isn't tempting for us for a few reasons:

1)The $500 unit still has a paltry 16GB storage. We have lots of music and lots of photos. We would have to spend $800+ to get the 64GB since, IMO, the 32GB model has too little storage for a product sold in 2011 and expected for me to use for a few years for our music, videos, photos, apps, and whatever else.

2)There is still no way for me to permanently save my email attachments on the iPad. We want to keep our MS Office and PDF docs offline. And we don't want to be connecting the iPad to the computer more than say 1 time a month.

3)Although the CPU speed is nice, there are doubts about RAM increase. We need it. We have apps that need it.

4)Safari stinks (iPad 1) in that it can't keep open a few web pages...it has to reload/refresh them which is extremely annoying for us heavy web surfers. This may be due to low RAM.

5)Mono sound. Seriously, Apple?! We have the iPad 1 and are not impressed with the speaker.

The iPad 2 has some nifty enhancements like the CPU and slimmer design and longer battery and Facetime...but some of us out here don't work on a machine for 10 hours straight nor care that it's .01 inches thinner (I'm exaggerating on the inches). :) I'm a consumer just like others and all consumers have things they look for in a new/enhanced product. These are my reasons why we will not buy an iPad 2 yet I was REALLY WANTING to buy it. Guess I will wait for the 3.0

You bought the wrong product!

May I suggest a MacBookAir?

everyone who says that the ipad should have a retina display has never hold one.

Why do you say that?

I'll be buying 2 on the 11th, so it's obviously not mission critical to me.. but I will say that going back and forth from my iP4 to my first gen iPad is a little painful! I would have loved to see a little boost in res, even if not to "retina" level. It was Apple that trained us not to want to see pixels, after all. ;) I was good looking at the old screens right up until I got my iP4! :p

Buy iPad 2 now, and sell when iPad 3 launches. You only live once. ;)

Nah...1)I'm not into all the effort (selling, wiping the machine, buying new, putting all the content/bookmarks back on, etc.) for a 1 year use case and 2)I'm not losing money. I can wait :)

I couldn't. I handed my iPad 1 down and now I'm patiently waiting for the 11th!

Go ahead and get the iPad 2...

then Apple will release iPad 3 with a higher resolution, more RAM than an cell phone and an sd slot. Everyone who will pick up the 2nd gen. iPad will suffer the same fate as the iPhone 2 which had minimal updates.

Good Luck with that!

And the iPad 4 will be better yet, plus ship with a free kitten.

There's constant improvement in the tech industry. This is news to no one.

a very compelling arguement against thanks

thank you for posting your thoughts, I'll keep using my trusty iPhone 3Gs for now.

Apple Digital AV Adapter

Screw it. I'm getting the Apple Digital AV Adapter the day after it's available --so I'll get it on 3/12/11. I've ordered a 15ft long HDMI cable via ebay. So, I'll be very happy to use my iPad1 that way until iPad3 comes out late this year or next year.

If it had retina, that number would be a lot more. I don't think they could've handled it.

No it wouldn't be more ... the device would be much more expensive (= less buyers) and production volume of the screen would also be more limited (=couldn't manufacture that many devices). And anyway: the current display is not bad, I read a lot of books on it and do all sorts of other things - no complain from me. Retina display is an over hyped term that does not mean too much. Of course a better display is always nice - but really, no retina is no show stopper. I have the iPad1 and I will get the iPad2 in addition.
