Change 'preferred' to 'optional'

"Preferred" is too strong of a language.

Make that "optional".

I'm a developer - if I want to install any app from a command line, I don't wanna lose that ability, or even be remotely pushed into a 'preferred' direction about how I should install apps, thank you very much.

Not like if it will ever be dumbed down to this point, but if Apple makes it "mandatory" to install apps via "Mac App Store", I'll sell the Mac, buy a thinkpad and put Linux on it for good.

I said before and I say it again... Prepare for a controled app distribution for the next years to come. Don't laugh if I tell you you will need to jailbreak your Mac soon....

So long as I can do a fresh install and/or buy a family pack online this is fine. Otherwise I'm gonna get a physical copy.

pro: one less disc to keep track of. my family already lost my iWork disc.

cons: what if i want to format the hard drive and restart from scratch? or even just archive and install? what if i completely replace my hard drive? what if i want to sell my mac and get a new one, would i retain the license or would the buyer get it? how would they reinstall the OS after I wipe the hard drive? how long is this going to take to download? will we be able and authorized to burn our own install DVDs from the downloaded software?

All my disc stay in my MBP box so I never lose them

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

I for one prefer a puter sans all moving parts anyway, reason why I use my iPhone as my computer 90% of the time. let's not just talk of paperless, let's do it-save trees for national parks and optical and hdd resources for some other useful purposes. I sold my car and ride a bike, live local...

It has a few cool apps, but I still prefer Steam for game distribution, and other apps I use like Google Chrome, Skype, Gimp, and Microsoft Office are not available on the Mac App Store.

So no. The Mac App store is not my 'Preferred' choice for app distribution.

I don't see that coming.

I think for the computer itself, the new iOS features simply enhance the OS, not redefine it.

i intend to get mine on a disc rather then a download.

Not if you don't have a choice.

When they released Snow Leopard they said that the 'upgrade' was only for Leopard users. But in fact it works regardless.

This is a way to make sure that folks are only upgrading.

I suppose they could offer two choices. One is a $29 upgrade. The other is a $100+ full disc image you could burn (rather like how the betas are apparently being done). Both through the app store. With perhaps the ability to care Apple Care and order the full price disk if you have a really ****** connection

so hows this work if you have a HDD crash and need to do a fresh install ?

step 1 , find old snow leopard, physical media you have long since forgotten where it is.

step 2, wipe the congealed mass of whatever has stained them whilst they have been stuck to something at the bottom of a draw of assorted things you never use,

step 3 , install snow leopard

step 4, download and install Lion

No , i think for my OS i want physical media for a one shot clean install.

i dont even use the mac app store to buy any apps as it is, to expensive, i browse it, find an app i like, then buy for 30%+ cheaper from the devs website , the apple tax doesn't work if you can purchase the same content cheaper elsewhere.

Why is everyone getting so bent out of shape so early? First off, this is hear say and not officially stated by Apple yet. If that time comes, I'm sure there will be the option of a physical disk, or some way to make a bootable install disk using disk utility. I mean this thing is already 9 pages long of people flipping out that OMG!!! ITS A DOWNLOAD!!! Guess what? Microsoft offers windows as a download, and guess what? You can burn it to a physical disk.. I can't believe so many people are already jumping the gun on a RUMOR. It's a RUMOR until Apple officially announces it...

I think it's because if people step back and look at what Apple is doing, most people can see then heading down a path that many won't like by the time they get to the end.
It's just that we have only taken the 1st few steps at the moment and it's going to be quite a few years before we get to the end.

I'll laugh.

People continue to mix up the mobile platform with the desktop platform. They're not the same. iOS and OS X aren't ever going to converge (well, not until mobile and desktop devices do... which is certainly inevitable, but at that point the paradigm will be different anyway) and your computer won't be locked down. There's no reason for it.

Digital distribution, on the other hand, just makes sense in this day and age. I've been getting my games via Steam for years and have no desire whatsoever to go back to buying boxes. It's just more landfill in a few years.

Seriously? Apple doesn't even have CD keys and/or activation. That too would solve the "problem" and could have been implemented without the App Store and without a forced download.

As long as then disc option is there, I can't see this as a problem at all.

Consumers will vote with their wallets and if the app store is the chosen, convenient method of distribution then so be it.

Why can't you just download it and back it up on a USB key, or a thousand USB keys?

Give me one good reason why you can't do that. If you're posting on Macrumors you have enough bandwidth to get it, just may have to wait a few minutes.

4 GB a month capped 3G Data is the only option I have.
The fact that I post here and have helped out on the Apple Support forums for years does not mean I can download multi GB OSs with impunity.

I'll buy the Lion disc.

Depends on the price.

If it costs the same for the retail box as it does the download - then I'm going with the retail box.

Really ? Apple Store in Montreal had plenty of copies on Day 1 and for weeks afterwards. Piles and piles of the stuff.

In Hungary they got like 7 copies in the entire country, and only about 2 weeks after the official release, then it was sold out for another 2 weeks and then they got a few copies again :D

The good thing with the App Store is that you may end up in a lame country and still be able to download it as soon as you want.

8Mbps in the 90's? I've got 12 now and think that's wonderful...you're probable one of those Xfinity snobs:rolleyes: jk. Wow, I knew non US ISPs push some serious speed...idk why Amurika can't get none a dat goodnis

My Internet in the 90s was actually better than it is now. Of course, now I get "30" Mbps (hardly ever hit that), but I'm capped at 150 GB per month.

Back when I first subscribed to cable, it was unlimited downloads and 8 Mbps was rock solid.

Some of those universities that hosted the Linux/BSD stuff back then had some wicked pipes, they could saturate my 8 Mbps while installing a Linux distribution. With only about 300 MB of stuff to download back then to install a full Linux distribution with X11 and a WM, installs really flew.

+1 also want to buy OS X Lion on USB key but only because it looks cool and I like to do a clean install of OS X each time a new major version is released.

The USB key is near worthless. I can sell you the one that came with my MBA if you really want a Apple branded USB key. Be warned, it's so fragile that the first time you try to insert it, it pretty much kills the thing.

However, considering that all the Macs in the line-up except the MBA have DVD drives and the much higher costs with production of USB flash media, I'm guessing there won't be USB as an install option, at least, not unless it's "BYO" USB.
