Two things.... John said they want "Performance, Connectivity and modularity". I see performance and connectivity. I dont see anything modular here...

Also, Mac Pro last one?! What! Where's my iMac Pro or the 27" iMac?!

It’s not an all-in-one. Display separated from computer. By definition that’s modular.

Yes, Mac Pro is the last model to make the transition.

27” iMac will eventually come back with Pro/Max. At the same time they’ll also release a Mac mini with an M1 Pro.

Fairly simple: M1 Ultra is the rumoured Jade 2C- Die. Mac Pro will get 4C-Die, so essentially double up of M1 Ultra.
No, that is not happening. Apple said the M1 Ultra is the last M1 chip, ie Jade. So the Mac Pro won't be double the M1 Ultra, it will most likely be two M2 Ultra's instead.

So there is M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra... and now there will likely be 1 more chip in the 1st gen (M1 series).

what name is bigger/better than Max/Ultra? M1 definitive?

anyways...

It looks like the final M1 chip will be essentially multiple M1 Max connected together. The M1 Ultra is essentially 2x M1 Max put together... the M1 chip in the Mac Pro would likely be 4 x M1 Max linked together... or possibly even more than 4. They might have something to reveal for like giant server replacements for cloud computing that is several M1 series chips linked together.

Definitely going to be more on that secret M1 Max feature that will be apart of a future apple event for Mac Pro.

No, Apple directly and clearly said the Ultra is the last M1 chip. Didn't people watch the event?

Hmm… I’ll have to watch that part again. I’m pretty sure he said, “Today we’re adding one more M1 to the line up…”

Edit: The quote as, “We’re adding one last chip to the M1 family”, so I guess that’s that.

Definitely not going to be M2 Ultras. Those are easily two years out, if they’re even M2, will probably be M3 Ultras by then. Still unknown how the release schedule will go.

Apple could easily add 2 M1 Ultras on package creating an M1 Extreme. If they decide to go that route. If not, they could still offer a second Ultra as an upgrade.

Discontinuing the 27 inch iMac seems crazy to me. This remains a one of the best machine’s in Apple’s lineup. For me the 24 inch screen is a step back. And none of the external screens match the quality and simplicity of the 27 inch 5K iMac screen.

If that’s true, pricing will likely start at $8,000 (twice of the price of the Studio Ultra, which is twice the price of the Studio Max). $8,000 is also the price of Studio Ultra specced with maximum upgrades.

With the Mac Studio and they M1 Ultra, I’m very, very excited to see what Apple releases for the Mac Pro when it transitions to Apple Silicon.
just make sure you'll be sitting down when pricing is announced

I have to give it to them, they did deliver on their promise on the 2 year transition.

I am just wondering who is nuts to buy $20K Mac Pro's now.

Like electric cars cost more than the ICE ones
Electric cars are faster. The M1 GPU performance is great, but not great compared to high-end dedicated GPUs.
I'll bet they're just gonna make the Mac Pro's built-in GPU(s) so fast that this isn't a problem anymore. But it hasn't happened yet.

Guess the M1 processor is the modular part from Apple's perspective, since they were able to basically stitch two of them together ;)

The Mac Studio that was introduced today may be as powerful as the current Mac Pro, but Apple made it clear that the device is not intended to be a Mac Pro replacement.
Should have thought of that before announcing the Mac Studio. :D

Being real it just means you haven't see the quad M1 Max SoC yet. ;)

the mac pro, cannot have M1 ultra if they want to place 4 dies of Max in it
M1 max has just the possibility to link to just one more resulting in this Ultra
2x Ultra doesnt exist in fabric....so Mac Pro will come with the M2 family probably
Since before the first Apple Silicon system shipped, because there are fewer options for internal changes, I’d figured that the differences between tiers would be in the I/O. Just like the M1 spanned the Air, Pro and Mini (main differences between being form factor and I/O), I figure the same would apply to any future Mac Pro. Same top end CPU/GPU/RAM/Storage configuration with the added bonus of internal storage, more connectors, or whatever other special sauce Apple is hearing from it’s well heeled customers that they want.

Once USB4 comes out these boxes won't cost so much. Gamers and ML engineers need these PCIe slots, I'm not sure if regular Mac pro users do.
Gamers and ML engineers won’t be able to do much with PCIe slots as GPU’s aren’t likely to go into them. The next largest use case for slots is probably audio cards considering Logic Pro, but any other use case beyond that gets REALLY niche.
