I like these ads and I echo the sentiment of wishing Apple would use the same approach to advertise OS X. Perhaps with 10.5 coming up we might see this happen? :)

Dashboard can be customised

Hello

After much lurking I figured it's about time I give something back to MacRumo(u)rs, and have decided to join the troupe! :)

If you scrutinise the 'How to' iPhone ad, you'll notice that at 2 seconds (upon the CU of the hand model selecting 'iPod'), the number of icons on the phone's dashboard grows.

Clock jumps down to the last line, indicating that there is perhaps at least one surprise icon that has been added by Apple, that has not been revealed at this stage, and has been removed from the wide shots of the phone in the ads.

It may also indicate that users will be able to customise the order and appearance of icons, perhaps in a similar way that the dash on OS X can be cusomised.. thoughts? :)

Not much worth saying than 'simply awesome'.

I mean WHO in their sane mind is EVER going to want any other type of phone??

I mean really WHO??

Roll on October when they arrive in ye olde England. I can finally put this awful RAZR in the bin where it belongs.

I mean WHO in their sane mind is EVER going to want any other type of phone??

People who just want to call other people?
People who don't want to scroll anything by moving their fingers across the screen but prefer clicking on a button?
People who don't want to pay more than $200 for a phone?
People who don't want to be tied into a 2 year plan just for a phone?
...

In summary, me :)

I'll add a few items to the checklist, reflex:

- People who don't want to pay more than $100 for a phone
- People who already have an iPod
- People who are committed to Sprint ( ) because it's the only way to get their parents to cover their cell phone bills while they go through college ;)

Yeah I can add to that too:

People who want 3G (I've heard the iPhone is not 3G... correct me if I'm wrong)
People who have a Nokia N95, with built in GPS

iPhone ache

The videos really highlight what seems a real problem with the phone, its orientation, and the need to keep swivelling it round in one’s hand as one shifts from function to function, from widescreen to portrait and back again. You switch the phone on in portrait mode with the phone resting upright in your hand, want to scan through your album artwork you must rotate the handset 45 degrees to see the screen in widescreen, want to look through a list of music though and its back to portrait, want to watch a video and its another hand turn back to wide, want to answer a call it’s a twist back to portrait and so on. Indeed one can imagine that if the iPhone is a success we will soon see some variation on RSI developing as legions of iPhone users begin to experience strange wrist aches from repeatedly twisting the phone in their hands. Lets call it iPhone ache or iPA for short.

Beautiful ads. So nice to see features being demonstrated for once. This is how Apple should advertise Leopard imho.

Hmm, I was not really interested in the iPhone so far, but if the UI is really as smooth as shown in these ads, I will be tempted once it reaches Europe (with more connectivity and memory, I hope).

I bought my new iPod the same day the iPhone was announced. I do not need a cellular phone that is this expensive, I have one and I ony use it a couple of times a year. On the other hand I use my iPod almost every day.

This is by far my favourite set of advertisements from Apple. They actually show you what the product does and how it looks, rather then completely ignoring all of the beautiful design and thought that was put into the product and its interface.

Plus, they don't feel the need to insult the competition for once.

What competition? :D

I doubt this will be a problem. It's used a lot in the ads to show it off because visually it looks interesting (and it was a good way for them to cover the edits). But no one is going to be accessing information so quickly that they are going to strain their wrist.

But does make me wonder if anyone would use the coverflow option to pick tracks. I know I would just use the list, because it would be easier to find what I want.

Plus, you can rotate a rectangular object without your wrist... try holding an iPod or something of similar size and you'll see you rotate it with thumb and fingers fairly easily.

I'm not saying the product is perfect, but I imagine rotating the iPhone will be okay given its size, weight and the amount you'll actually do it in the real world.

EDIT: Also, did anyone notice on the first add that the Zoolander clip does not rotate when the iPod is rotated? Just in wide screen the whole time.

Pictures

Does anyone know, how they plan to sync photos to the iPhone when someone is using Windows?
They have iTunes for windows, but not iPhoto. Just syncing folders?
How do they do this with iPods right now?
-greets :)

You could have posted the link that you got this idea from.

Um, you don't NEED to swivel it around. you could just use it in upright-position. Of course if you want to use coverflow, you do need to sviwel it, but you are not forced to use coverflow. Same thing with tv-shows and the like: Don't like to sviwel, then don't watch videos. Other phones do not have that problem because... well, they don't play back videos.

3G isn't that big of a deal as network coverage is sparse yet in the US. It doesn't matter if you have a 4G phone if the network towers you access are only 2G or 2.5G.

Sorry everyone has said this I know but when he said which is the closest he opened the maps icon, didn't do anything else (like scroll the map to his location )and I presume the map of his location was automatically displayed.

This could be ambiguous as it could be a default location map or hopefully it could be a positional system

My current phones (both old 2g ones and latest 3g) says the location of the nearest transmitter eg North Ryde, Dural, Sydney etc so presumably just the transmitter location could be used to get the map centred on that tower- surely??? In Google Maps IF LOCATION= SYDNEY THEN GET MAP OF SYDNEY (or whatever)

I noticed the same thing...but to be honest, rather than a "slip up", I think they just had to "fill in" that empty gap, or else it would look odd on a "close-up". It doesn't seem to be inline with the rest of the icons too - about .5 a degree anticlockwise if you ask me, indicating they just edited it on there

Steve said in the keynote that all videos play in widescreen mode, not portrait.

On the GPS issue, if you look at the bottom of the screen when the google map is displayed, there's a button that's marked satellite. Could that be related to anything other than GPS?

Oops. I just realized my mistake. Of course it refers to viewing a satellite image rather than a map.

Sweet adds... but I just noticed something on the "how to" ad. When it says 'this is your email" look at the bottom of the iPhone screen, it says update "6/3/2007 12:55PM" while the iPhone still "June 3 9:42AM" how does that work?
