So I just heard from a friend of mine that the Apple Store Managers were told to plan on extended hours for the iPhone launch. He hinted that they may stay open for 48 hours straight for the launch. I found this to be quite interesting.

LOL B.S.

Most of the stores are at malls or shopping centers. They usually have contracts with opening ad closing times. Plus what cackhead is gonna buy an iPhone at 3:30am? LOL

Two thoughts:

Numero uno: At Cingular (assuming AT&T hasnt changed this). You get the cheapest price on a new phone, if you are a brand new customer. If you are a previous customer and are merely UPGRADING your phone, you get a cheaper price for extending your contract, but you dont get the cheapest price, so 699plus. If you arent eligible to extend your contract, you must pay FULL price, so 699 plus PLUS!
People switching to AT&T will pay 699.00. Those of us who are already on ADHD (sic) will have to pay MORE than that if we are eligible to EXTEND. Those who cannot extend yet will probably have to pay even more.

Numero twoO: The Mac ads probably dont show cool OSX operations because the unfamilar LOOK to the screen might scare windowheads from switiching over just because it doesnt look like what they are used to. Many "untechy" people fear switching because they struggled to learn windows. Relearning the basics scares them. The people the personified mac and pc commercials are aimed at are not the computer literati that enjoy gee whiz cool operations, but at the OMG do I have to learn a NEW way to close a window novices.

I could be wrong but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Does anyone even know... [corporate business use]

What kind of processor does this thing have? Is the earphone jack proprietary? What sort of data encryption does it have?

Nobody seems to be asking the real questions here. DEMO.com has a great article on business/corporate issues.

"But what I think AT&T (and Apple) is hoping for, at least initially, is that the high-end business muckety-mucks will be so enthralled by a marketing campaign for the iPhone that they'll come into the office the next day and demand that the telecom manager (or IT manager) buy a bunch of them for the office. Depending on where the power lies in the organization in terms of technology tool purchasing decisions, this could be a strategy that works for Apple and AT&T." -Keith Shaw http://www.demo.com/demoletter/how_the_iphone_could_become_businessfriendly.php

Know what you're getting into.

It's been done before ..

The same CACKHEADs (SP?) that buy Xbox 360's, PS3's, and Wii's after standing in line for days. The iPhone "gottahaveits" are no different.

Actually, here in ATL, in a local mall, Apple did stay open for extended hours on the 10.4 launch (several years ago).

AT&T stores open that long, I doubt it -- Apple Stores, I can see it.

I'd be willing to bet you can set the default zip code as a setting on the phone pretty easily. If you're just somewhere else for a bit, then you can easily type in the zip code. Then again, it wouldn't be beyond the capabilities of the technology to know where you were based on the cell towers you were using, if AT&T and Google were to work out that high a level of integration (somewhat doubtful, but very cool if they have). Either way, I agree that there is pretty much ZERO chance that there is a gps in the iPhone.

I see your point, but essentially the home address/default zip is useless.

If I'm at home, chances are, I know the city pretty well already. I don't need any help finding the mexican restaurant 3 blocks away.

On the other hand, if I'm visiting San Francisco for the weekend and want Mexican food for dinner, there's a very good chance I'll need directions to the nearest place. ...and I probably wouldn't even be able to supply the phone with my current zip code because I'm in an unfamiliar city.

Essentially, the example in Calamari is completely useless unless the phone already knows where I am, because if I'm asking for directions, I don't obviously know where I am.

...and lets get one thing straight: the iPhone may not have a full-fledged GPS, but by law, it needs the ability to locate itself. ...It's only a matter of Google using this info in conjunction with the maps to center on the current location.

2 Year Contract...

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but...

If you sign the 2 year contract to get an iPhone, does that exclude you from getting a Rev. B iPhone if it is released within the next 2 years? We can only assume AT&T will keep milking 2 year contracts from iPhones so long as they remain the premium devices they are...right?

Ive wanted an iPhone for a long time, but thanks to this chat and those ads, NOW I want some calamari!

Sorry if this has been answered

I didn't want to read through all the post, but I assume the phone can be purchased online through the Apple Store. Can someone confirm that.

I think Steve said that at MacWorld in January.

if that is the case, there is no need to wait in any line. It will be in hand on June 29 or by the monday after.

Apple is pretty good at shipping fast.

My guess is that because the prices listed are not subsidized, that you will pay those prices but you can only purchase an iPhone if you are a brand new customer who signs a 2-year service agreement or a customer in their upgrade qualifying period ( re-signing ) and re-signs a 2-year agreement. iPhones will not be available when signing a 1-year agreement or without any agreement.

If you sign the 2 year contract to get an iPhone, does that exclude you from getting a Rev. B iPhone if it is released within the next 2 years?
Likely yes. You only qualify to upgrade a few months before your contract is about to end.

Hopefully, AT&T will let me purchase the iPhone while I'm in a 2 year contract with them- I don't care that it extends my contract for 2 more year, I just want an iPhone and don't think I should have to wait for 12 months for my old contract to expire...that would be stupid.[/QUOTE]

They wont make you wait. I bet they just charge you MORE than $699 to purchase the iPhone.

Location

"Did someone say Calamari?"
"The closest would be..."
"Ah."

Um.. can anyone come up with how the phone new where it was to give the closest location? Guess I am still hoping for some amazing secret to still be revealed...

You might want to read the thread. ...or at least this page. ;)

This is a very debatable topic at the moment.

Considering both Apple's specs and the FCC submission don't show any GPS info I WOULD be surprised (as would the FCC) and so, no... there will be no GPS this time around.

But is fcc paperwork required for features that aren't phone related? Why would they care about GPS?

Ive wanted an iPhone for a long time, but thanks to this chat and those ads, NOW I want some calamari!

I had a calamari appetizer out at dinner tonight, what irony! :p

My main questions is why is AT&T being so tightlipped regarding price plans and just how much the full service for this will cost? You'd think they'd let us know a while in advance so we could all warm up to what will inevitably be a rather steep monthly bill instead of springing a wallet-sucking price plan on us as we are at the AT&T counter ready to purchase the iPhone.

At least give us some time to convince ourselves that paying what I presume will be around $100/mo (on the cheap side) for service is justifiable, even if it isn't. :p

I'm guessing in order to get the phone, service, activation fees and all the other fees, you'll probably need to walk in with about $1k to spare just to be on the safe side.

And now I'm really thinking we might see a Safari web browser for windows, otherwise why work to build the safari brand on the iPhone (97% of people dont know that "Safari" is the standard issue Mac web browser).

Interesting. In the field of 'wild speculation', there are many 'way out' things (for Apple) that Apple could do relatively easily with their technology IF they chose to.

Safari for Windows? Your point about brand recognition is interesting. I imagine that .Mac integration would interest many people too.

Certainly anything which makes the iPhone work better with Windows is possible How about iPhoto? Pages & Keynote? I guess mail/iCal/Address book would be reasonably useless.

I'm still wondering about OSX-lite for Windows running basic OSX apps.

It's radio transmitter functions (which mobile phones have of course) that they mostly care about these days. In the past they used to require the whole registration deal for all sorts of electronic devices, but it's since been streamlined for receivers and things that aren't especially radio-related.

Nice ads, now I want one even more. But since I live in Holland I'll have wait a bit longer. But I think its gonna be worth the wait since, I think the european version will have 3G, edge is beeing fased out here in The Netherlands and all over europe.

I'll have to watch these ads when I'm home!

My brother bought a little GPS-bluetooth unit which he sits on his dashboard and uses from his phone.

I hate this complaint.

Anywho...

You can already find pricing. ~$40/month + taxes / fees for the low end 450 anytime, unlimited M2M, 5,000 weekend nationwide plan. ~$200/month + taxes / fees for the 6,000 anytime, unlimited M2M, unlimited weekend nationwide plan. ~$40/month + taxes / fees for the Media Max Unlimited that includes: unlimited Media™ Net ( data: web, email, ... ), unlimited Cellular Video, and unlimited messages ( text, picture, instant, ... ). So, ~$90/month on the low end, give or take. Probably ~$300/month for the very high end with all the extra extras.

Some think that at&t may have a discount bundle pricing but I think not.
