Let's all be honest with ourselves.

Hospitals are slammed every FLU season (see below).

Anybody that has been to Apple lately knows how strict they are. Capacity is limited, clerks stand behind a table and masks are enforced. Closing just means they don't even believe these measures work.

Aside from that, essentially nobody is getting sick from Apple store. Even restaurants are not high risk places where spread occurs, this was concurred by a CA judge that mandated the government allow all San Diego restaurants to open. The vast majority of spread occurs at home, and nobody is wearing masks at home.

This is an anecdote but every person that I know that has been sick recently has been from FLU and not COVID.

Your evidence that hospitals right now are slammed with flu patients is a 3 year old article?

Do you think most people are getting sick at home because the virus is spontaneously generating at home? It just blinks into existence? Or do you think it might be because someone carried it in from outside the home and since no one in the home is wearing a mask it easily transmits to the rest of the household?

And citing a judge as a epidemiology reference isn't the best source. You might prefer to use the CDC which lists restaurants as a significant risk:

Flu rates are way down this year in the US, largely because of Covid prevention measures:

True, NY and NJ got their rates lower at one point, but it took shutting down the economy 3 additional months, and after all that, their daily Covid numbers are now basically in line with Georgia’s so what exactly did they accomplish other than putting more people out of work, more businesses out of business, and driving up their debt?
Less dead people than they would've had on their hands if they hadn't.

Judge Wohlfeil's ruling was based on his belief that neither the state nor county provided sufficient evidence that showed restaurants contributed to the spread of the coronavirus.

Per

The judge said neither the state nor the county had provided sufficient evidence showing that restaurants and live entertainment venues operating with safety measures in place contributed to spread of the novel coronavirus or the impact on hospital intensive care units, and the restrictions could not be justified.

But Judge Wohlfeil's ruling that allowed restaurants to reopened got halted on appeal.

A San Diego appeals court on Friday issued a stay, blocking a Superior Court judge’s ruling that had allowed restaurant and live entertainment venues to reopen in the county, and closing a window of opportunity that opened briefly for an industry besieged by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The move by the 4th District Court of Appeal came in response to an emergency application from the state Attorney General’s Office for Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state Department of Health. The stay means restaurants must, again, shut down.
The request for a stay argued that San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel Wohlfeil overreached his authority Wednesday when he issued the injunction prohibiting state and local officials from enforcing restrictions on dining that limited restaurants to providing only take-out service and banned live entertainment.
The state said the move jeopardized the health of county residents because it undercut public health orders aimed at mitigating the spread of the disease.

I guess the appeals court found there is sufficient evidence that restaurants are superspreader sites.

Don't forget not overwhelming the healthcare system and allowing people who postponed elective surgeries to finally get them.

The U.S. also had a huge shortage of PPE. Not containing the spread would mean putting those frontline healthcare workers lives at greater risk.

These is the whole “energy under the curve” argument. If you are susceptible to this virus, whether you get in April or December is moot.

Lockdowns do not prevent you from getting it, it’s inevitable. But consider

if you get a few viruses, they will reproduce and your body will detect and produce antibodies- like usual. That is nature

if you get a HUGE infection of viri; sneeze in your face dose; they will again reproduce, but as their numbers are great, your body will be sick before the antibodies gather sufficient strength to overcome the virus

being exposed with low doses, allows for natural immunity. Danish studies of 6,000 subjects shows a 0.3% deviation between mask and non-mask wearing individuals. Significantly showing that masks make little to no difference.

To this day we are not detecting Wuhan Flu with any degree of accuracy CDC stated deaths are being retracted almost monthly to show far fewer deaths than previously stated. Also yearly influenza cases are at nearly 0 this year, far below average. Only ~6% of the stated deaths are from Wuhan Flu (Section 3 - Comorbidities at CDC)

it’s media driven fear

Funny thing about the truth ... truth doesn't change. Every facet of the Wuhan Flu has gone through a series of illogical changes. If lockdowns work, if masks work; then why is there a spike? Why is the annual rate of influenza, which we have records of dating more than 50 years, nearly zero? Why has the CDC said that ~6% of the reported Covid Deaths are people who died FROM COVID, rather than had COVID as a contributing factor? If you have cancer, heart disease, pulmonary failure, emphysema, uncontrolled diabetes - COVID isn't going to help.

But, as the CDC states that the average life expectancy in the US is 78.6 years, and has remained unchanged for the past several years; and the average death from COVID is over 80 years of age (even with Comorbidites, as listed previously) - why are we locking down?

Logically, Texas, South Dakota and Florida should be leading the USA for Covid deaths and infections - they aren't. Sweden never did lock down, they should all be dead - they aren't.

Barnum is quoted as "You can fool some of the people some of the time", obviously never was aquatinted with pushing a non-existent pandemic. "15 weeks to Flatten the Curve; now in month 9"
Ummm the Swedish cases were so bad they just decided to implement a lockdown.

So, your answer was to stay locked up for all of 2020 and beyond until vaccine is widely distributed? Seriously? Lol...OK...glad you weren’t in charge.

Desantis should be running California too...what a joke of a state without a clue. Florida is practically fully open and is comparable with the numbers in California. Lockdowns aren’t working and you’re literally killing people with them.
If lockdowns are killing people, theybdont have a chance against COVID-19.

China did a serious lockdown and it worked for them and most of Asia. Had we done a two month lockdown and opened up with mask mandates it wouldve worked for us too.

I know all of Asia isnt wearing masks just for the sake of it. Masks work. Social distance works.

I dont know why anyone is using florida as an example they are lying about their numbers and even with that they still arent doing so great. They are basically doing about as well as NY and they have hot weather and sunlight on their side.

I agree with you. I am a medical student, so it will always be my first responsibility to save someone’s life, and if we’re just going to have the attitude “oh well, they were 75 anyways, they lived a long life” then why stop there, as you pointed out. We have a responsibility to take care of our more compromised, but I also believe we cannot destroy businesses i.e. lives the way NY and California have.

As a side, unfortunately for the US we have a sick, multiple-comorbidity ridden population at baseline, so our outcomes are bound to be worse. Look at our obesity rates alone which is highly inflammatory and immuno-compromising (hello TNF-a). COVID looks to be more of a vasculopathy which explains the bizarre range of symptoms and morbidities associated with it. So if this is acting as an inflammatory disease, and you are already a chronically inflamed individual, then your outcome is already poor. The other unfortunate part of this is America is so divided politically, that the left and right are all or nothing. Total Lockdown indefinitely being endorsed by liberals, and this is fake news by the conservatives. America needs a desperate return to the center politically and the population must be able to support more fit individuals than Trump and Biden.
Its not about being in the center. The center is how we got to the politics we have now. Trying to moderate the center means we are doing half measures and splitting the difference for the sake of “unity” rather than understanding that many times the best solution could be the conservative solution or the liberal solution. COVID-19 doesnt care about moderation. Science doesnt care about peoples politics and a return to the neoliberal pro business pro greed center.

Many things can be true. It’s a mess. California isn’t doing well as I just showed you. I have the ability to see both sides.

California isn’t controlling the spread. We don’t necessarily know why, but locking down isn’t stopping it. This is not a lockdown versus not discussion because there is no perfect answer.

The argument is, what should we do to maximize the good for all? Lockdowns are too onerous on the majority and are largely proving to be ineffective in control.

Open economy with precautions is the best compromise for a %#! situation.

I hit you with a bunch of facts, which you essentially dismissed, so we are done.
Half the state wasnt following the lockdown. Lockdowns only work if everyone does it.

Well that’s weird because they have the third lowest positivity rate in the country.
I just left CA because it was a mess before COVID-19. Poor Gavin is doing the best he can... but the only people greedier than conservatives are California liberals. Robert Reich preaches about economics but then he NIMBYs an apt near his house in Berkeley because it has a 1 BMR unit and itll hurt his lifestyle.

I couldn't care less about what happens to people based on the decisions they make. What angers me is when people needlessly put others at risk of harm because they feel entitled. Ignorance kills.

The phrase is "Live free or die", not "Live free and kill those around you". The doctrine of personal responsibility does not mean "every man for himself", it means taking responsibility for ones actions and the impact of those actions on oneself and one's community.

So your argument is that there's a global media conspiracy manufacturing news and only the most passionate American "conservatives" can see see through the ruse? This is all a ploy by the liberal media to scare only liberals into making decisions detrimental to their livelihoods?

This seems like a major violation of Occam's Razor, no?

I think you're confusing "responsible" with "scared". I find this happens with people who lack a sense of personal responsibility-- they only thing they care about is their own survival so the only reason they wouldn't do something is if they feel it puts them in danger. I'm certainly not scared. I'm not in a high risk group, it's not likely that I'll be personally affected. I just happen to cross paths with people who may be more vulnerable, and I owe them the courtesy of not endangering them and those they cross paths with.

It's the same logic behind not letting people drink and drive. It's not really about protecting the driver from their own idiocy. Whisky isn't known for inducing cowardice, so getting liquored up and taking the wheel isn't an act of bravery that us common folks can't muster. Banning drunk driving is about protecting others from the irresponsible behavior of the few.
Well stated. Im not even a woke liberal and I agree with this.

Well, my gosh, 90%. You'd better scoot down to the clinic real quick then because the herd is passing you buy.
I'd gladly be part of the herd getting the vaccine than the herd of idiots who were proponents of herd immunity.

Ok here's something I wonder.

Suppose I live in a town with a bunch of small businesses that I am not patronizing because I'm afraid to, due to concerns about catching the virus.

Would you claim that by not patronizing those businesses, I am stealing their rightfully deserved profits? Because that's a basket case of entitlement if I've ever heard of one.

During a normal flu & cold season, I am very familiar with people going to work sick. Both where I work (where there is ample PTO and sick leave, and you won't get disciplined for taking it), and at businesses that I go to. And of course, if I go to a business and am served by someone sick, I guarantee you I'm never going back there.

Yeah though, right before I started working from home, one of my coworkers came in the day after having a massive fever. He looked like he got hit by a car. Dude was in no condition to be there, but he was there. It was then that I decided I wasn't going to play around with this BS. Same with most of my coworkers. So we've been working from home since, lol.

Say all you want to say. Virus and nature will do their job as usual regardless. Keep believing covid is not a thing until it actually comes to bite you or someone nearby.

I like how nature and covid virus just keeps infecting people equally as long as they get the chance. People with similar mindset like you are going to lengthen the lockdown and help spreading the virus. As far as scientists know about the virus, it’s long term complications can either degrade the life quality of the victim in various ways at best, or straight up leading to major damage and death. A couple cheeky mutations from the virus can render the vaccine largely useless, or boost virus lethality, making them more contagious and kill people easier.

Feel free to ignore all of those scary parts as part of the conspiracy theories. Idk much about bible but when god demands the death, there is nothing much one can do about it.

Lockdowns and masks are preventatives, not guarantees. Without them, things would be even worse than they are.

Coincidently, masks and lockdowns certainly helped with that low influenza rate.

Just because someone is old or sick doesn’t mean they deserve to die.

Sweden admitted they made a huge mistake and are backtracking because things have gone so poorly for them.

And the fact that you think this pandemic doesn’t exist is precisely why it’s gone on for so long.
So masks and lockdowns work for flu, but not COVID-19? Flu is mysteriously down, which some say is due to masks, yet COVID-19 cases are soaring, but the masks aren’t stopping it.

Or, and stay with me here, Corona as reported from the beginning is MUCH worse than the normal flu. I know that's hard for some to grasp because their inept leader told them otherwise (the same leader who is now plotting martial law because he lost an election).

There have also been several videos on YouTube that show professional groups of physicians proving that most of the face masks people are wearing do NOTHING to prevent the spread of COVID. This includes the morons who wear those stupid face coverings that cover their entire necks. You know, the ones that are as thin as pantyhose? Yeah, those.... But yet the media wants us to believe we need to wear masks if we need to go out in public. Whatever.... Like I said earlier, I wear N95 masks because I do it out of respect for all my local businesses that require masks upon entering their establishments. But I certainly don't believe that wearing a mask is going to shield me from getting COVID if I happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Whatever happens happens but I'm not going to live in fear no longer.

Do what you must and continue to be part of the fear spreading if it makes you feel better.
Wearing a simple, medical mask will help to minimize exposure to any sickness, but is better used for people who are already sick.

I'm currently working in retail and people are morons.

We have the morons who are wearing face shields but still use cash.

We have the morons who wear gloves and touch everything, but leave the gloves for us to pick up off the floor. Gloves are meant to be used once only. If I wore gloves, I'd use hundreds each day.

We also have the morons who think that buying multiple packages of paper products, disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer for themselves, but not leaving any for others will solve the problems.

If the people in the White House would had called to close down the country in November 2019 when they first heard about it, and all the morons who avoided the lockdowns would just have complied, the USA would have been in decent shape now.

masks and shutdowns are clearly not working.

Especially when not applied or with half the population in some countries arguing as if were the end of civilisation to man up and fight that virus rather than pretend it will go away.

When applied, lockdowns surely work.

Tell that to the countries that don't have dumbasses for leaders. How'd masks and shutdowns work for South Korea? Australia? New Zealand? China?
China? Good one.

Australia is an island with 2 major cities. New Zealand...same thing.

South Korea is the size of Alabama.

Australia has been criticized heavily for no masks and “idiots” running Around with no regard.

Again, every country is different. US isn’t the only place struggling. Geography matters. Reporting transparency matters. Climate matters. Pointing to lockdowns as the key “reason” certain countries do better is silly. There are many factors and many key differences that make locking down harder in different countries.

Shutdowns aren’t working in America. Say it’s Trump’s fault all you want, but he doesn’t decide what individual states do. Liberal led states are not doing well.
