The store in Greensboro, NC had an attempted robbery before opening hours. At 4:43 am a man drove his car through the front window. Police were unable to arrest him because he ran away.

I had someone do a physical break-in at one of my shops right after the police themselves did an anal inspection. They tried to break through the front door iron bars and failed, tried to remove the A/C unit and climb through and failed, so they rammed their vehicle through the bay door.

They didn't get enough to make it worthwhile, but how do you explain that to someone on drugs or who works for the police department and has already fully cased the joint?

Never had a problem with crime either before or well after the police inspection. It was probably a galactically impossible coincidence. :(

Anal? Did you mean to type "annual" or do you mean "anal" as a synonym for "overly thorough"? And what business did the police have inspecting the shop?

Falsified probable cause. They found a 4 ox bottle of ammonium nitrate after I allowed them to inspect the lab. We don't use it in production which we have dozens of drums of chemicals for. I said anal.

Totally legal to possess and used in a research project for the Air Force.

In case you have not actually read the "security provisions" passed since 9/11, let me simply conclude the police are not anybody's friend. Bin Laden's stated goal achieved.

Let's change that back to the way it was in the 70's when the police were our collegues.

my home does not have a window the width of my house. If it did I would have way better security and I would not be showing off $50k plus in good for random thugs walking the street.

If I was dumb enough to do this, then yes, I would assume I would be getting robbed at some point in the future.

There's nothing hilarious about being stolen from regardless of how lax or stringent the security measures employed. Honesty seems to be a lost virtue these days. I'll end my comments by saying I hope you're never a victim of such criminal behavior.

"Apple's new Security Grate system". They talk about it as if they thought of it.

It's just a roller shutter, we've had them here for 50 years...

It sure as hell doesn't take 7 - 10 days to fit either. These can be fitted over night. No retailer worth their salt would close a store for a week purely to fit shutters, they must be installing more security than just that?

Yes, but.... My read of the photo is that Apple's grate system is much less obtrusive than I've seen, even in indoor mall stores. Given SJ's obsession with design, it's easy to imagine that he decreed the development of a grate that was much less visually obtrusive than standard designs, probably with greater resistance to cutting through or wrenching open.

Insurance companies probably decided to stop insuring Apple Stores against theft unless they improved security.

I know I sure as hell would have made the same choice.

I wonder if now that the grates will be in place, if vandals will simply break the glass through the grate just to be arseholes.

Though when I see how thick the glass they use is, I'm surprised it's even possible to break it, assuming it's tempered glass. I've seen people try to break modern sliding glass doors and they take a lot of abuse before they shatter... and they're maybe a quarter the thickness!
