so why even mention device cost at all then? you implied iCloud was part of the cost. Surely more expensive items can support greater iCloud storage by that logic you are presenting

This is a good start but this wouldn't even be needed if they didn't make people jump through hoops to backup their iOS devices to external drives. So I can get a phone with with 512GB but then my fancy state of the art new iMac only comes with 256GB. What if I don't want to store my backups in the cloud. What is the reasoning behind Apple not supporting easy external drive backups?
I agree. This is something that needs addressed. Especially if you have multiple iOS devices

brofkand brought device cost up. i didn't. why don't you ask him? or is it your goal to only attack those that don't complain about apple?

I backup to an external drive. I use iMazing. In my opinion, it offers much better backup options and data availability than Apple.

I'm an Apple FanBoy and I prefer to buy OneDrive; 1TB Cloud storage and Office subscription.
The iCloud options are ridiculous. And the Files app to use the documents on the iPhone looks like Windows 3.11

I might be too old school, but I prefer to have my backup on my Mac. Changing iPhones is so much faster doing everything offline.

I know it's possible through various ways. For us tech savvy people, we will find a way. The point is, this should be something that should work right out of the box from Apple.

I dont understand. If you want more iCloud Storage. Pay for it. Why do you even expect Apple give out 50GB for free?

No, you are not only paying for 50GB of SSD, you are also paying for Bandwidth and redundancy. iCloud Photo access. These aren't dump storage in the cloud.

I could see 5GB per devices. I much rather they give me Time Capsule for iOS so I can keep my stuff off cloud.
And it’s so cheap. 50 Gb is a dollar a month. Skip eating out for lunch one day and you pay for the whole year. Base being 10 would be nice but the plans are dirt cheap.

How about increasing the base storage for every device you own? 5 GB per device, not 5 GB total.

I mean, I have been paying for 2 TB iCloud for years so this doesn't apply to me. But its ridiculous for average users to not get this concession.

Paid users like you should be getting storage size increases, and the free iCloud tiers should be reduced to 2GB.

Based on the complaining, this solution is better and a more fair allocation to those who actually deserve it.

no. 5GB is enough for app data. if you want photos and backups, users pay extra.

a 3 device owner increasing their base storage from 5GB to 15GB isn't a functional improvement. you still can't use icloud photos and still can't backup. you've taken away something that's functional for most free users and gave multi device owners something that doesn't change they way they use the device. you've created more angry customers to satisfy no one.

I just wish they offered more tiers at decent Prices. It’s unfortunate there are now tiers between 200GB and 2TB. I could use 500GB or 1TB @ $5.99 and be perfectly happy. I hate to pay the $10.00 and leave 1.5TB empty.

Thank you for that Apple. Now fix the 5GB free plan. This is ridiculous in 2021

I have the 2TB tier with Apple One sub, so I am willing to pay for this service. But if Apple want more people to eventually subscribe on the paid iCloud subscription, they need to give a little more in the free tiers
Explain your logic on that?

If most people get say, 50GB for free (which a few here have said), then why the hell would i then pay for more?

This solution solves the problem perfectly, it allows people to transfer their phone easily to a new device.
People just want everything for free these days....

They should do this for updates, too. Far too many devices can't/won't update because they don't have the free space. That would also solve the Watch Series 3 update woes.

Not to mention Apple aren't getting $12 dollar either. The ~20 cents processing fees per transaction means they are really only getting $10 a year in US. I often think the $0.99 was priced so low purely as a bait for user to join iCloud. Because $1 for 50GB is basically near break even cost once you factoring in bandwidth and redundancy.

It gets really weird when you consider you can’t backup a (full) 64GB+ device with the lowest paid tier, or a 256GB+ device with the mid paid tier!
Sure you can...a 64GB iOS device could never require 64GB of storage to back up. Here's how much iCloud storage my backups are using:

iPhone XS - 46GB used on device, backup is 1.1GB
iPhone 11 Pro Max - 168GB used on device, backup is 3.4GB
iPad Pro - 65GB used on device, backup is 1.8GB

Well I certainly hope you’ve made some good backups of your media and important files elsewhere then… kinda defeats the point of a convenient cloud backup doesn’t it?

Valid point with the older folks. I guess Apple added the + to keep from having to the Plus. There did need to be some kind of separation from the free tier.
You’re right to continue in the logic of Apple TV - Apple TV+, but i still dont think that we need this difference between the free version and the pay one.
