ONCE AGAIN, Apple no longer leaders NOW only followers - just playing catch-up.

yeah, because the surface was such a big hit. Better follow what MS is doing.

Microsoft just built a Smart Cover and slapped a keyboard on it. If apple takes it a step further and adds a new great feature, it's not copying. It's just friendly competition, and without competition, there's no innovation.

This! :)

The bold word: Did you mean "without"?

I'd say the Microsoft integrated keyboard was better than Apple's keyboard - it also cost twice as much! And I suppose about 10% of customers are interested, maybe even less. Which explains Microsoft's huge sales numbers :D

Yes, 12" iPad with keyboard integrated would kill the Surface. Maybe not kill, more like "drag the dead body out of its grave and deposit it in the landfill".

thanks for the correction. yes I meant without! :D

Although my techno-lust will be in over drive tomorrow, I need to remind myself that my iPad 3rd generation is terrific and does everything I need it to do. The only reason I would upgrade is if I was planning on giving the old one away to someone.

Is there any demand for it?

That's a good question - feels like a "skate to where the puck is going to be" sort of product.

I do hear/read about plenty of people who dislike screen/virtual based keyboards for "type intensive" use cases.

The Surface keyboard suffers because tablets are so often used in locations that don't have convenient, large flat surfaces, I prefer the onscreen KB because it's self-contained, I can use it on my lap, holding it up, lying on my back, etc.

Honestly, I get a whole heck of a lot of use out of my Logitech keyboard cover:

The thing is perfectly complementary to the iPad, and I so prefer having real scissor-like chicklet keys to any kind of membrane stuff. It feels better. The plan for me is to get a new iPad, but then I'd also need a new keyboard because the form factor will change.

I figured it wouldn't be long before Logitech would put out a new version of their cover for the new iPad, but if Apple does something like this, I'm all over it like a fat kid on a smartie.

Lol, where are all the "COPYERZZZZZZ" post?

Apple is clearly copying The Surface, but I'm sure the fanboyz will find a way to justify it.

But we all know when another phone with a finger scanner comes out everyone's going to be like "THESE PPL ALWAYS COPY APPLE!?!"
Whatever - I just want the coolest solution, I don't care if it says Apple or Samsung or Microsoft.

This could be cool.

IMO, this demonstrates Apple's lack of ideas now. Bigger/faster iPhones, smaller iPads, different colors, and now keyboards.

No more "Wow! I never even thought of that before" ideas, which is kind of sad.

Mate. I'm no fanboy but a keyboard is a keyboard no matter how much it folds, covers, bends or whatever. Keyboards have been around since man discovered fire. In fact, I read somewhere keyboards predate Jupiter. Nobody is copying either way

I've been seriously looking at the Surface Pro 2 to replace my iPad2. I'm finding recently that I want a tablet that I can carry but also use for web browsing and more specifically writing. The Surface Pro's keyboard covers do the trick perfectly. Just not enamored with the size/weight and sound from the speakers. I can deal with windows 8. That doesn't bother me at all.

The problem with the current keyboard covers for the iPad, for me anyway, is the lack of a trackpad. Microsoft's Type Cover is not perfect but good enough with nice tactile keys and the trackpad. The trackpad is small but better than nothing. It helps a lot with navigating on screen without having to lift your fingers from the keyboard.

I'm curious about this rumor, since it seems ios7 doesn't have true native support of mice or trackpads. At least from what I understand there is no native API in ios7 to allow applications to know that a mouse or trackpad is installed. I hope this changes in the future. Both android and windows 8 have this support built in. Even though very few Android tablets seem to take advantage of it by releasing keyboard docks/covers with a built in trackpad. I hope Apple puts native mouse and trackpad support in ios7 in a future update. The iPad is almost the perfect tablet and would be nice to be able to do serious writing and other tasks with a keyboard dock/cover with a trackpad.

ARC is NOT a form of garbage collection at all.

What this author is attempting to explain is that ARC ( Automatic Reference Counting ) is a form of "life cycle management of objects", as is Garbage Collection.

The differences between ARC and Garbage Collection, however, aren't really worth discussing in the original context, and the description 'a form of garbage collection' will suffice.
( If you are an iOS developer than presumably you know the difference already )

Unfortunately the author's lust for pedantry outweighs their ability to comprehend contextual appropriateness.

Yes, I'm gonna say it, they are an unashamed pedantphile !

Just a reminder on here, so far every single iPad keyboard has connected via bluetooth only, I do not know of one that even plugged into an iPad's dock connector? The Microsoft Surface Keyboard connects and interfaces to the tablet through the magnetic connection. Totally different.

And as for the Surface Tablet patents, oh and I am also very 100% certain that keyboards for tablets existed before 2011!

Surface Keyboard Patents:

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-scores-three-patents-for-surface-touch-cover-7000013194/

http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-5...ds-design-patents-for-surface-cover-keyboard/

And so on and on, so it looks like if Apple wants to use the same tech, because it seems MS have a patent for the magnetic connector, it will need to license it from Microsoft so in effect 'copying' what Microsoft has done and patented.

Thought that an important point to make considering how much you lot just love to throw patent stealing and bashing around on these threads.

I don't expect it tomorrow. Heard no rumors beforehand.

So maybe Apple's "doubling down on security" actually achieved something?

There was a time when Apple actually released products at the keynote which came as a complete surprise.

I mean, not in the last two years, but....

It's a lot easier to keep a new case secret. It doesn't necessarily need the massive production volumes of a new iOS device, doesn't require the same amount of testing, doesn't require developers to add support in advance.. etc.

...multi display cover

Now that would be awesome.

Especially if they had software that could duplicate the type of things seen on Microsoft's courier project. Or if you could display two app's side by side, and interact between the two.

But of course, since iOS7 doesn't have the hooks installed for such a device, such awesomeness is beyond the realm of Apple for 3-4 years. Expect to see it on a Win8.1 tablet first. :D
