It's not even the power requirements so much, outside the US (yes, still part of the world) there is next to no network infrastructure to support such a device.

Network infrastructure outside of US is a lot better than you think. Far better than that in US.

I was about to comment about how people that read plist files should get a life when I realized that I'm reading the thread... FML

high power usage, insufficient levels of coverage, exceptional reason to have to upgrade to yet another newer phone; yup its safe to say LTE will come next time around. However if they do, this would be one godly iPhone!

Better camera, A5, more RAM, possibly slimmer design. solid update but not magnificent. I hope they increase the starting memory capacity but keep it at current price levels, that would be cool too.

is the A6 supposed to be a slimmer chip? i heard someone mentioning A4 and A5 are 45nm and the A6 is said to be 32nm (?), if this is true, and the next LTE chips are also smaller, then they could fit happily together :)

don't feel bad about that, because technically you can think like that for anything you do. If you are not passionate or excited for anything life gets pretty dull and boring, that is why we get caught up with nonsensical things. Ever since we no longer have to struggle for food and shelter, this is what has become of us :apple:

The figures you refer to have to do with the minimum feature size, not the thickness.

LTE is launching everywhere in the US. If the iPhone 5 does not have the capabilities for 4g it will be a flop. They might as well just hold off on launching it. Sure a different phone will be fine, but on a 3g when 4g is available. Forget it!

OK and that is why the original iPhone wasn't a flop despite only having EDGE when 3G has been around since 2001...

Whatever... all these excuses to defend why the iPhone does not need to have 4g. I think it is really lame. What key big players in the market are talking about launching a new phone "high speed" phone that is supercool with no 4g capabilities? Let me answer that "none".

All those who are saying that no one knows the difference between 3g and 4g is silly. Once they go to upgrade...they might not know the difference between terms, but when a salesman says this is slow and this is fast. Guess what... anyone can tell the difference of those two. Guess which phone will be the winner.

Also, all the talk about 4g not being rolled out. It has and will hit all the major markets. That equates to probably 80% of the mobile consumers. Not 10,000 population at the corner of the state.

You know if Apple can higher and grab some engineers to fix the battery drain by next year and the 4g "bugs" (whatever)... then they sure as hell could have dumped the resources to get it done now. I am not an Apple hater like others on here... I am a consumer that is willing to pay for latest technology. Not someone who wants to buy into whatever Apple says because they are "Apple". Next month there will be another phone release from every other carrier with new "faster processor", "better camera", and "cooler design"... in reality it is all taste. About the only thing iPhone has the upper hand on currently is design/functionality and Apps. As far as most innovative and technological. It is falling quick. The company needs to get on the move and stay in the front as they were. Don't get behind like they did with Microsoft. They have the lead keep it... continue to be the best! Damn.

Also, this is exactly what generates mediocrity. The reason being there wasn't another gadget as such. Guess what? Times have changed the game and market has changed. Also another shocking news will be the there is not one smart phone player anymore. Hold on to the past all you want. Things are moving forward and there are other phones that offer the things the iPhone originally created. so i guess we can  all day at each other's comments. No 4G is a disappointment to say the least.

It all comes down to this: by my guess, the reason why Apple didn't release the new iPhone earlier was the fact they did incorporate LTE support into a new, low-power cellphone chipset for the new phone. They're just waiting for production to ramp for this new chipset and to get full FCC certification for the iPhone running in HSDPA+, EVDO and LTE high-speed cellular data modes.

Like I said earlier, the new iPhone will initially not offer LTE, but can upgrade to LTE through a firmware upgrade.

Not even close.

Apple loses one...

I've been an Apple user from the beginning - even through the lean years. When I was due for a new phone I held off buying one because I was waiting for the iphone 5 to be released. That was until my friend let me use his 4g HTC Thunderbolt in a 4g area. (Verizon service) The speed was beyond anything I imagined.

When I learned my area would have 4g by the end of the year and that a 4g iphone 5 was the longest of long shots I bought an HTC 4g phone.

If the iphone 5 isn't 4g I think iphone sales are going to drop dramatically as people become familiar with what the technology offers.

I think this may end up being one of those rare Apple blunders.

Is Sprint's current "4G" service using LTE? I thought it was using Clearwire's WiMAX network.

Sprint did sign a deal with LightSquared last month to roll out LTE services on their network, but that sounds like a future project and not one already in place and being expanded.
