They have 4 years with the same design, sure they are testing a lot of design. I hope the next one has a hole. The audio jack is no USB/CDROM

I think that Apple should think a while on their decision to split up the iPhone line further. Right now, we have the SE, 7@4.7", and 7@5.5" as the current flagship phones. A streamlined experience and the draw that if you buy one of their flagship phones, you'll be guaranteed to be able to do everything iPhone has to offer was one of the main pulls for buying an Apple Product from a developer and a consumer standpoint.

As Apple further complicates the iPhone line, they step away from the curator role and start becoming more of a Samsung with a bunch of models shotgun scattered at the consumer to see which ones hit.
I think they should do lots of versions, they could give me one with a headphone jack

Same here. OLED is just another technology that get some excited just because it's "the latest" and has a different label. Still has issues.

Frankly, I hope Apple stays with the latest LCD used in the iPhone 7. As a photographer who makes photographs with my phone everyday, I'm much more interested in a wide color gamut like the iPhone's DCI-P3, one that's accurate and rated highest by DisplayMate.

Given Apple's recent approach of going for what's popular with the masses over what's technically useful, I doubt you'll get your wish.

Please no more 3D Touch. It's a pointless technology. Press and hold is much better.

Press and hold and 3D Touch don't do the same functions though, so removing it now would be like going from a 2 button mouse to one button.

I like the color accurate nature of the display on the 7, as well as my 9.7 inch iPad Pro. I use both to pull down shots from my DSLR cameras in the field. Since I am more often pulling down shots trackside, the phone's compact size is a key so the display being bright and color accurate is key for me.

I could see iPhone 7s (4.7, LCD), iPhone 7s+ (5.5, LCD), iPhone Anniversary Edition (5.5/5.8, OLED).

Then in 2018, they go back to 8 and OLED for all releases. The Anniversary Edition would allow them to slowly get OLED out.

Why do people insist on calling this an "Anniversary Edition". Based on previous examples, Apple won't introduce, nor market it that way. Apple has only ever sold one "Anniversary Edition" and that was the 20th Anniversary Mac, which Steve Jobs promptly discontinued with steep discounts to liquidate stock upon his return to Apple.

Now anything could change with Tim Cook in charge now, but what makes people think Apple will suddenly do an about face from Steve Job's position on "Anniversary" products and looking backward?

They didn't, 2016 is a 'tick' year ("S" years being 'tock')

2012 - iPhone 5
2013 - iPhone 5S
2014 - iPhone 6
2015 - iPhone 6S
2016 - iPhone 7

Right but the 7 is a tock, not a tick despite the name. So if 2017's model is the barn burner rumors tout it to be it would be tick, not an "s" tock. So The whole naming scheme went out the door this year.

If they split their product lines further with the iPhone 8 and this OLED thing, Apple have completely lost it. A few more years of this and it'll be Scully's Apple all over again. They're well on their way to becoming just another tech company. The New 2020 Apple Macbook "Pro" 13" without touch bar (MBP13000), 13" w/ touch bar (MBP13001), 15" w/ touch bar (MBP15000), 15" w/ touch bar and touch screen (MBP15100), 17" w/ touch bar (MBP17000), 17" w/ touch bar and touch screen (MBP17100).[/
To most reasonable people apple has always been just another tech company.

I would not "Bet" on that. ;)

Which part? The S model being exiled or there being a Plus and Plus Pro, so to speak? In regards to the latter, I don't put anything past Apple. The S naming scheme makes zero sense anymore with this year's model being so similar to the past two years minus the headphone jack and a chip and the other minor features. If Apple puts an S by next years' grand anniversary edition then it betrays the upgrade from a marketing perspective. Everyone knows S stands for snore.

Tim Cook is alive and Jobs is dead. So they will do what Tim Cook wants. The ceramic apple watch is called Apple Watch "Edition". They could do the same with the OLED phone.

I want a 5.2" display in a 4.7" device width (significantly reduced bezels) that is shorter than the 4.7" model with OLED display, dual cameras on the back, and stereo speakers on the front. This is a quick mockup I made in Illustrator with an iPhone 7 for scale in the background showing how a 5.2" display can easily fit if they reduce the bezels. I also illustrate my dual speaker concept and removal of the mute switch and home button which will be integrated into the display.

As for the microphones, my concept is that the microphones are integrated into the speaker component. Depending on device orientation, the microphones dynamically shift. For instance, if you're using the top earpiece normally, the bottom speaker will stop broadcasting sound and listen for sound instead using the integrated mic. This would allow someone to use the iPhone upside down, perhaps making it more orientation agnostic like the iPad? This also makes the design cleaner as there aren't microphone holes everywhere.

I also had a concept in my mind where you could also have a top and bottom FaceTime camera to make it symmetrical. This could be implemented in the future to either make 3D FaceTime, or perhaps blur out backgrounds while using FaceTime which could be handy for people with messy houses or who otherwise want more privacy about where they are or who is walking through the background.

Attached below is my mockup. I did slim it down by a mm, but I wouldn't mind if it was slightly thicker to accommodate the cameras. However, there are supposed to be some better battery changes coming down the pipeline along with a process shrink for the A11 which will make things more energy efficient. Considering the battery improvements already made in the iPhone 7, they could probably get away with something like this but it might be tricky.

First, offering big screen and small screen phones, and now curved displays?

Apple, stop copying Samsung.

Amazed at people still saying this about large screens. When the original iPhone came out it was the large screen smart phone that all others copied. I remember people complaining about how big the iPhone screen was to all of the smaller phones. So actually Apple started the larger screen thing a long time ago.

I was not commenting on the "Edition" aspect, but rather the "Anniversary" aspect. Aside from the fact Jobs is dead and Tim Cook might do things 180 degrees differently, what other actions by Cook's Apple signal they might dwell on the past by actively marketing an "Anniversary" branded product?

Why no complaints regarding Apple ripping off Samsung Galaxy?

Because, it's not out yet whether they will explode or not.

Jony, please include in every box a sheet of glass with an Apple logo and nothing to connect to, so you get that idea out of your system.

Then get to work and make a beautiful design like the 4 happen again and put the head phone jack back. Saw a guy with an iPhone 7 with a dongle and wired headphones connected.
He had the "courage" to look ridiculous.
Wired headphones will stay around for a long time.

At the rate Apple is going, I may consider the next iPhone at version 9S or 10S, or not at all.

As Steve Jobs warned us several decades ago, great tech companies start to die when the sales and marketing "hot shots" take over. I think we're seeing Apple's second death spiral in action. The best thing they can do right now is axe Tim Cook, possibly make a design guy like J. Ive the CEO, and replace Ive with a younger/hungrier designer/design team. That would be a good start. Otherwise Apple = Sony = Samsung = Microsoft (circa 2005).
