I am pretty sure the design is already decided. These phones have long lead times. They may be deciding on minor technical details, but definitely not 10 prototypes.

Apple is obviously running out of ideas.

Get Tim Cook out of there. Please. Seriously.

I think you must be confused and assumed this was a petition, not quite. It's actually an article regarding Apple experimenting with various OLED models. You should read the article, you might find it interesting.

I have a feeling alot of people are gonna be dissapointed comes 2017 when they get an iPhone siminlar to the last with just a few spec bumps and a pro label to charge more for it...

and the decision of which one to make will be made by a combination of apple bean counters and supply chain partners who tell them which one can be made in the best yield

I read the article; I commented on my material findings. I'm sorry, did I confuse you?

An article from anandtech from last year analyzed the efficiency of AMOLED screens from the past few years. While the gap is narrowing, producing white with OLED still requires more power than LCDs do when producing white.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9394/analysing-amoled-power-efficiency

While my post was mostly limited to correcting the myth that the iPhone LCD uses less power with white than black screens, I thank you very much for that interesting article.

I notice that in the end he didn't seem to compensate for the difference in screen resolutions. For example, he says that the Huawei P8 LCD is 33% more efficient than the Galaxy S6 AMOLED... but the Huawei is 1080 x 1920, while the Samsung is 1440 x 2560, which covers the 33% difference.

Also, few of us keep our devices at 100% brightness.

He also correctly notes that any difference only occurs with an empty white page. Adding text or images like most pages will have, can drastically lower the OLED power requirement.

And finally, he states, "I would say that Samsung still needs to achieve another 15-20% improvement in power before AMOLED is consistently more efficient than LCD devices in even the worst-case APL and high white-percentage scenarios. Given the last generational improvements and if Samsung keeps resolution constant, this seems to be an achievable goal for next year as long as emitter research and development continues to advance at the current pace."

And the article was written in mid 2015. So it seems that at least by the time Apple uses OLED, it'll equal or surpass LCDs in power efficiency.

Regards.

I think that Apple should think a while on their decision to split up the iPhone line further. Right now, we have the SE, 7@4.7", and 7@5.5" as the current flagship phones. A streamlined experience and the draw that if you buy one of their flagship phones, you'll be guaranteed to be able to do everything iPhone has to offer was one of the main pulls for buying an Apple product from a developer and a consumer standpoint.

As Apple further complicates the iPhone line, they step away from the curator role and start becoming more of a Samsung with a bunch of models shotgun scattered at the consumer to see which ones hit.
This article discusses testing prototypes, not complicating the product line. Apple has done this a lot, and it doesn't mean they'll release ten kinds of iPhone 8's.

My big quibble is the trend of making a relatively crippled phone for those who prefer the smaller form factor, as I do (no optical image stabilization, pooror camera, less memory, slower SOC, no force touch, etc.).

MAKE APPLE GREAT AGAIN - MAKE IPHONE GREAT AGAIN - MAKE IPAD GREAT AGAIN - MAKE MBP GREAT AGAIN - MAKE INNOVATION GREAT AGAIN hahaha, this joke company hasn't gotten my $ since my iPhone 4.

Tim Cook is considered "Material Findings?" I must of missed the part where you commented on the OLED experimentation. You know...the actual topic of the article. But in return, you feel the need to disparage aginst the CEO of a company that has no affiliation with the article, only to draft negativity in the thread, thus, is uncalled for.

Example of on topic material: If Apple implements OLED into the purported "iPhone 8", perhaps they will implement OLED into the larger variants (5.5) and LCD into the 4.7 iPhone.

Yeah, whatever happened to Apple knowing what we want, before we ourselves do? Fragmentation..... ugh.

This is where the frustration with rumors appears. Because Apple prototypes so many features, some readers here want them all and don't understand when they don't get them all.

I think having diverse suppliers will be key, and I am hoping for premium phones that offer both OLED and LCD. Not happy with burn-in on my android devices that have OLED, and if Samsung is the only supplier, it's clear they haven't solved that issue yet.

I'd assume Apple has thought of some software fix for this, like a mandated 30 second shutdown if the screen hasn't changed image or something.

"Apple doesn't innovate. Tim Cook must go."

*reads article*

*realizes Apple innovates*

"Apple is trying 10 innovations. That's not enough. Tim Cook must go."

smh the ridiculousness...

So here we in the UK it'll cost £900 or £1000 staring price. I am selling my iPhone 7 because of its poor rubbish camera and going back to the 6S, and as Apple don't acknowledge any problem it won't be fixed anytime soon.
The more I see of these reports the more it seems we will have an iPhone 7S and 7S Plus and then a special Plus sized OLED model at a ridiculous price. So again no point upgrading. I even bet they'll keep the same design next year as they 'claimed' it was a new design this year...

Just curious, what camera issue are you describing?

I can already see the OLED burn-in on the iPhone... That's the big disadvantage to these displays.

Ask anyone who owns a Samsung Galaxy whatever from the last few years... Looking at a white screen, you can see the horrible burn-in.

Bad colour smearing and poor exposure on some of the photos of my dog. The iPhone 7 gets confused where the 6S was much better. Their is a thread in the Apple support forum about it. I have also had a very slow shutter speed. I believe they have changed something due to the RAW file capture?
I'll probably wait for a 4.7" or 5" OLED model now and keep the 6S for a while. I've also had bad issues with my car and the iPhone but that may be iOS 10, will find out when I get my 6S. I didn't really complain about my 6S and iOS 9, the camera was one of the reasons I upgraded.

I really hope they don't embed the home button into the display but instead make the whole bottom bezel the home button.

That's probably more likely, however Apple have really been putting form over function lately.
I agree. I'm still wondering how embedding the home button into the screen would work because if you 3D Touch the screen, I don't know how Apple would be able to make sure it wouldn't interfere with anything on the screen and just exit the app or multitask or whatever. Having it at the bottom bezel would allow them to make it smaller with the same screen size.

Maybe they'll make it so only the bottom area of the screen is actively a home button (like palm rejection on iPads). Unless they dedicate an extra portion of the display as a false bezel, a display integrated home button won't be good.

They better be testing more than 10! I'd be surprised if they aren't testing hundreds!
They do but it means they've narrowed it down to 10 different models for prototyping. Although they'll of course be slight alterations made to those models over time in different prototypes.

I will go with LCD. OLED is pretty but my last Android (Samsung Note 4) developed screen burn in and now I am not too crazy for it. I hope that one day that they can engineer OLED to not have burn in

Which part? The S model being exiled or there being a Plus and Plus Pro, so to speak? In regards to the latter, I don't put anything past Apple. The S naming scheme makes zero sense anymore with this year's model being so similar to the past two years minus the headphone jack and a chip and the other minor features. If Apple puts an S by next years' grand anniversary edition then it betrays the upgrade from a marketing perspective. Everyone knows S stands for snore.

Yes, sorry. I agree no "S" badging. I do however see 2 (S) type models , plus a stand alone premium model with OLED, and Wireless charge. A 4.7" and 5.5" with only an A11 upgrade, same chassis. A 5.5" with OLED, wireless charge, and a completely new design. IMO, as the 10th Anniversary with a big price tag.

IMO, Apple wants Japan Display in on OLED supply in a way that hurts. There is no way that will happen until 2018. 2018 will be OLED across the line IMO, including a new 4" phone. I just don't see (2) 5.5" Phones in a new design. Just MO. Sorry about the confusion. :apple:
