this is ridiculous. i've always loved the iphone for its size, and i wouldn't want a phone any bigger than the current iphone 5. hopefully they'll at least keep offering different sizes or i'm out.

if you're unable comfortably to use it with one hand only, it's not a phone anymore.

Yes, but competitors are offering larger screens with marginal increases in volume through more efficient use of space.

We can't even get an iPad Mini with Retina, can you imagine how long until we'd get an "iPad Maxi" with Retina? 2019, probably. lol. :p

I might be wrong on this but didn't Apple introduce the iPad Mini in October of 2012 (10 months ago)? I can't figure why you would express dissatisfaction that a retina iPad Mini has not been released. Take a moment and breath.

If the bigger iPad has Retina, there's no reason the Mini shouldn't have come with it when it was first released, let alone not having it still after almost a year. Now, picture the Mini as being bigger.. even longer to wait. It's ridiculous.

Apple testing larger screens?

Doesn't Apple realize their is a market for a larger iPhone. I love my iPhone 4s, however my renewal is in late September. I may very well switch to a Samgung Galaxy!

Well, Apple product engineers are experts. There was, to them, a reason why the first Mini did not come with retina even if that reason was a nefarious one.
I suspect the development of the first Mini was accelerated to compete with the other smaller tablets on the market.

I'm just guessing but I don't believe Apple wanted to produce a Mini. Why create competition for the larger higher revenue yield of the iPad. But, the success of Nexus 7, Nook, and Kindle put Apple in a position of not having a product in that size category. In response, Apple sped the mini to market without much development time. Hence, the absence of retina.

I am a recent Apple convert. What I have notice is Apple, in addition to producing quality products, owes much of its success to marketing and market manipulation. Apple product releases are timed to take advantage of peak purchasing periods and to ensure balance revenues and profits across all quarters. Its perfectly understandable, now that the Mini has proven successful without retina, Apple would wait until the Fall or the first 2014 quarter to release the updated Mini.

as long as i can choose between two screen sizes -- call it an iphone mini or maxi, whatever.

if i want a bigger screen, i get a tablet.

Absolutely. The intro of the iPhone Color/plastic gives Apple the chance to fork the product line where there can be a 4" model and a larger size without resorting to a tablet.

I dunno, the RD is pretty much already there, they just need the screen (which they can already do per the retina MBP.)

I can imagine using this to replace sheet music/song books very well. I used to use my iPad, but it just wasn't quite big enough to replace a song book like I wanted it to. It worked for short sets with songs that I already knew pretty well, but if I'm going to do a full night I had to bring the old three-ring binder.

It would also be awesome for artists that use electronic instruments/sounds in their live shows (thinking techno/house producers, and bands such as Nine Inch Nails.)

The Retina MBP is super-expensive, precisely.

O EM GEE.

Kristen....

KRISTEN!!!

I leaked!!!

I leaked on my iPad Maxi!!! :(:(:(:(

Can I use yours?

Yeahhhhhhh. no.

Apple maybe getting some serious competition from Google and the new Nexus 7.
The old N7 needs better sound quality and sound quantity though.
Also the old N7 is not as responsive as the ipad.
We will see if the new N7 is a big leap in overall performance.
If nothing else it will be another slap in the face to Apple to get off their as* and start making some progress instead of relying on the past.
The size of the old N7 is perfect. The iPad mini is just a little too big for my cargo pocket, and too big in price.
Also the N7 screen breaks too easy.

Yea I think so. In order to have a 5 inch screen without the phone being ridiculously big (cough Samsung cough), get rid of the "forehead" and "chin." No home button, hide the front camera behind the screen (per Apple patents), then just a small sliver for the ear piece.

Problem is the simplicity of using iPhone would be gone. Regular people wouldn't know how to get to the home screen, pull up multitasking, etc.

Simplicity? I don't know, the iPad has had that feature since at least iOS 5 (although it may have been earlier) and I only found out about it just last year LOL! It was by word of mouth that I found out about the five finger pinch. So my point is that iOS, in it's current state, is not as simple as one might think. Also doesn't Apple include a brief tutorial when you first start your iDevice showing you the basic gestures?

I've been wanting an iPad Maxi since iPad 1. I reeeeeeeeally hope this happens as I really have use for it showing my creative folio on an iPad. preferably the Macbook Pro Retina screen. I would pay $$$ for it too.

Exactly my point. What makes iOS simple is the single button on the front of the device. Remove that and it is no longer simple. As you say, normal people don't know about or use the gestures. That's why gestures should always be a secondary way to interact with a device.

Great ideas.. A bigger screen is much needed 4.7 over 4.3 in my opinion.. the mini is fine just retina that, and a bigger ipad is necessary because it will create more use for it over the mini. The regular iPad screen size was ideal when there was no such thing as a mini, but that ship has sailed. Steve Jobs was the one who didn't want to change it but its that time
