only taller? um.. i'd prefer one that is a bit more wider and a bit more taller, than one which is just tall, it just looks odd imo.

But most Cocoa Touch apps should work without modification if they have been developed correctly.

This is just plain wrong for anything that is only a little more complex than simple Browser View or a List View.

Cocoa Touch is infinitely more complex than just a few basic controls.

And the incoming phone call just shifts your view down. It's up to you to resize your view properly or not. Or make your views entirely height-dynamic because of this one single thing. Which hardly anyone does.

1136x640 is more appropriate than 1138x640 for scaling 16:9 content. Neither is perfect but 1136 is easy to scale as long as you sacrifice 1 line of pixels while 1138x640 is hard to scale no matter what.

To expand on your point, for compressing video, h264 (among other codecs) encodes in macroblocks of 16 x 16. If your resolution doesn't divide evenly by 16 it, won't compress as well so it pays somewhat (in both quality and file size) to go 1136 as well.

With WWDC in a few weeks, do you really think that they are concept testing the large screen? If they are going to do an unveiling, they'd better have already made their mind up whether or not the screen is going to change.

Then again, this may not be a concept test but a UAT test.

I also like a previous comment, got to use those mock ups :)

I seriously doubt they're going to be unveiling a new phone at WWDC..... I'd say a fall unveiling/launch is far more likely since the 4S won't even have been out one full year by the time WWDC rolls around.

I disagree - part of what has made the App Store so successful is the ease of developing for every iOS device. Apple knows this.

I agree - Developing for iOS interfaces is a dream. Android is a complete pain in the ass with all the different screen sizes / densities etc...

I would be suppressed if they moved away from the current aspect ratio...

The point is very easy to see. By having a taller screen and reducing bezel below and above the screen, they can equip the phone with a larger display without the making the phone much larger than it is now, effectively killing two birds with one stone. I don't like the aspect ratio much, but if the size is kept to the current iPhone size, it might be a worthwhile trade off for many.

That sounds very nice, except the screen really isn't "larger", it's just longer. Text, video, images, etc. would all be the exact same size on this new iphone vs. every other iphone ever made. It won't be any better for reading, playing video, playing games, or web surfing. The only advantage will be that it looks really, really dumb and ugly.

It is a completely pointless and stupid concept. I'll laugh my @$$ off if Apple tries to sell this thing.

But there will be more surface area. So it is larger, just not wider. I'm also skeptical of the utility from the extra length only but if the phone itself is kept in similar size, that should be a pretty decent upgrade. Less bezel is usually a good thing.

I think it's actually a pretty nice compromise for many. Also I'm sure it'll look great and Apple will laugh all the way to the bank.

the problem with the current iPhone ratio is that it is not efficient use of real estate: top and bottom bazel is too wide using over 30% of real estate.

If the screen isn't any wider then I'm going to defect and pick up a Galaxy. I like my iPhone, but my single real gripe in everyday usage is that web browsing on the current screen is a chore. Making the screen longer makes no difference to me in that respect.

I won't be buying a new iPhone with an extendo-screen. Don't care about wide screen ratio for videos and don't care about a longer screen when I can scroll down a little bit instead. Make the screen longer AND wider and I'll care, otherwise this is a useless addition.

I agree. Not making the next iPhone wider won't solve the problem of website text being too small nor will it solve the problem of videos being too small. Seeing more of the top and bottom or sides of the screen isn't the problem I have. The overall current screen is too small for me. I would rather Apple keep the same aspect ratio and make the phone overall bigger proportionally.

You do realise that video is what would benefit most from this?
Now you have black borders below and above video content as the iphone's 2:3 aspect ratio is different from widescreen video. By making the screen longer you can actually display the video on the entire screen, not a fraction of it like now.
You increase the size of the video displayed in both vertical and horizontal direction.

It's funny how when the "Steve had a part in this"article came out, we had people saying apple is milking his name, and now when ppl say he would never allow it, the same ppl are saying he had a part in it. The haters can't even keep their stories straight!

I'm not for or against this method of enlarging screen real-estate. What ever Apple does, I'm sure it will maintain it's 1-handed ease of use and pocketability. Those are pretty much my two main concerns with enlarging the screen, which is something I'd like to see Apple do in it's next iteration of the iPhone.

What I really want is that render, who knew by just taking the glass all the way to the edge of the aluminum and tapering it would make such a drastic, gorgeous difference. :p Also wouldn't mind if they changed the colour in those black bars in the aluminum, to make it seem more seamless, as if it were one piece of aluminum, although it isn't.

That's a really nice mockup.

The more I look at it, the better I like it.

Especially since they've tossed out the glass back and made it much more attractive. It's the first truly thin phone I find compelling.

One thing's for sure, it will be very interesting to see what Apple actually ships.

The longer they take to get it ready the better, we certainly don't need a buggy iPhone 5, or whatever they decide to call it.

I'm 3/4 finished reading Steve Job's biography.

In it, they mention having a dozen different test models for a specific product before narrowing down their choices to a handful, and then to their final choice.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of their 'handful of choices'. I suspect their final choice will retain the original aspect ratio.

I don't have the black bars because I use the zoom in feature in the video app. I already use the full screen of the current iPhone and that's my reference point when I say the screen is too small. Adding only more width in landscape mode isn't going to make my viewing any larger since I already use the full screen.

This leaked rumor depicts a phone so absurdly ugly, it makes me wonder if it's a deliberate rumor to throw us off. Nothing would surprise me, in this high stakes game Apple plays.

No kidding, I was just thinking about that the other day.
With multiple charging stations all around my house, sounddocks, my car iphone/ipod dock, this will make everything useless, and make me mad

Every year over the last couple of years there has been a rumour of the connector being changed and it would make no sense in doing so, it would make millions of products useless and sales would be hurt.
Wasn't it Apple that wanted to have everything wireless so you never plugged in a cable again including wireless charging?
If i remember correctly Apple didn't even want sim cards.
It would be foolish to change the connecter now when in a year or two it wouldn't be needed anyway
