No surprise. This is what Gruber has been saying he has heard as well. If they increase the screen size, this is how they will do it.

I so hope all these rumours are true - this is a major step up for the iPhone - a larger screen, without making this complex for developers and without making it uncomfortable large to hold (like some Samsung phones).
I look forward to pre-ordering (hopefully)...

Increasing the screen size would be nice. Increasing the overall footprint, I don't care for. Give me a option for an iPhone "Mini" if they make it bigger.

If they do add an extra row of icons, matching the iPad layout, can they please do something about the landscape / portrait differences?

On an iPad the layout makes it harder to find apps when you change. For example, the 2nd app on the third row in portrait becomes the 5th app on the 2nd row in landscape.

It would be better if each app icon rotated on the spot.

With WWDC in a few weeks, do you really think that they are concept testing the large screen? If they are going to do an unveiling, they'd better have already made their mind up whether or not the screen is going to change.

Then again, this may not be a concept test but a UAT test.

I also like a previous comment, got to use those mock ups :)

Speaking of WWDC, if Apple is going to go with a larger screen in the next iPhone, wouldn't they have to announce that at WWDC to give developers time to adapt their apps? However, it would be very out of character for Apple to announce hardware features far in advance of the release. I wonder how they will deal with this issue?

Might Apple make TWO new versions of iPhone? (physical differences besides just color).

I know its not likely, but one size fits all does have a limit.

4" by only increasing the height, no thanks. video content is not that long when watching sideways. we would have more black bars. This is just as stupid idea. keep it the same aspect ratio, just larger in both directions! WM 8 is looking a lot better these days....

From the way the article is written it looks and sounds like a huge whole wheat damn mess of a resolution.

Never mind the iOS guidelines! Let's just make 5 rows now! 170 pixels will help! Android needs some ugly competition badly indeed!

Steve is turning.¥

They'll handle it just like the retina display. They'll spring it on everybody at the iPhone event in the fall. A few select developers may get early access for demonstrations at the fall event.

Their not going to preview the phone at wwdc if it's coming out in the fall. The wwdc is about macs this year I believe, and if anything they might preview iOS 6

I thing it is a bad move to change resolution . It will complicate developer's life

Here is actual size comparison of Apple iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 3.95
Live comparison

The link you provided shows the overall iPhone size unchanged with the LCD the only thing to change. While I like this better than making the phone taller overall, it would be some major redesigns of components inside the phone. The lower dock/speaker would be much smaller. The top would have to change fairly drastically as well with smaller components. It's easy for people to draw mock ups of the outside when they don't have to consider the internal parts.

I would rather Apple keep the same ratio and just increase the overall size of the screen to a 4 or 4.5" screen. Not to mention a larger overall iPhone would allow for a larger batter that IS NEEDED for LTE operation. LTE is a major battery hog and unless I've not see something about major advances in battery technology they will have to go bigger to offset the power drain just like they basically doubled the iPad 2's batter for the iPad 3. I guess we will all know in a few months!

and hello tv remote.

seriously, no one expects a golden ratio but this ratio looks somewhat wrong...

Steve and the rest of Apple wouldn't let this monstrosity get released. 3.5 inches is perfect, Steve said that all along and would say it again today.

That mini connector is a game breaker for me. Seems pointless to invalidate the ten or so cables I have (car, truck, RV, 1 per room, recharching dock/alarm clock, etc). What would be the point of this?

I agree ... hopefully there will be cheap adapters
