Most of those that use a keyboard on a regular basis use it for quickly typing text (documents etc). The tactful feel and finger positioning on a keyboard, I would think, is essential.

So essential, I got a DAS Keyboard Ultimate to replace the crappy HP unit they gave me at work.

Annoys the hell out of the co-workers, but so much better than a standard keyboard and just kills chiclets by Apple.

I could see why. I do not think I could give up having the letters painted on my keyboard honestly because somethings I just need one key. If i am not tying with the home row I am more likely to look at the key I am pressing. That or if I am looking for one of the symbols above the numbers. I still do not know all those locations by feel yet.

I will say the crappy keyboards and mice that come with those desktops (Apple included here) for me end getting tossed right into my spare parts bin. I have 3-4 keyboards in their and even more mice.

Now I do like those laptop keyboards. I have used thin type keyboards in the passed. My current one is a logic tech wave keyboard.

As for the Touch screen only. I would hate them because the tactile feed back for typing is very important. Plus the endless hitting of a hard screen that does not give would kill my fingers. The keys compressing on a normal keyboard takes a lot of the shock out of the typing. That shock would be their with a touch screen keyboard.

Not likely

I don't think that it's likely that Apple will make a touchscreen iMac (let alone make every iMac option touch screen). These rumors have come up dozens of times before and have never actually happened.

They probably won't do it unless there is a reason some day in the future that a touchscreen would make the keyboard and mouse obsolete. For now I (and most people) would get the non-touch version (if they make one).

Sure, it would be "cooler", but it's not as good as a mouse/trackpad, especially because you have to do a LOT more work with your arms and hands. The trackpad requires only minimal movement with your finger. The mouse requires a bit more movement, but I like it because it has more buttons and it's more accurate.

all these so-called apple fanbois who claim this is stupid or this won't work will be the 1st ones lining up outside apple store the day touchscreen imac comes out.

all it takes is just one apple ad to brainwash you.

Nah, the Apple ads aren't very good. They just spread the word, not persuade. The now discontinued Mac ads were pretty good at converting Windows users to Mac OS users (and most of them had good reasons unlike that new "Deciding between a Mac and a PC?" ad-of-BS Microsoft has rolled out)

Very few people would buy this. Only kids/seniors who are new to computers entirely would get it. See my earlier post

Not sure about the idea of a touch keyboard. Most of those that use a keyboard on a regular basis use it for quickly typing text (documents etc). The tactful feel and finger positioning on a keyboard, I would think, is essential. However, your idea has merit on a touchscreen iMac where typing text is likely not the primary purpose.

Maybe Apple will roll out the Magic Keyboard? But really, "magic" is a bad name for a mouse or any computer hardware. At least make it "iMouse" or "Touch Mouse" or "Petting Mouse" (get it, you swipe it for various functions = petting), "Pro Mouse", or even "Super Mouse". Just not "Magic Mouse"!

Hahaha magic keyboard? Sounds like some nice toy for toddlers.

Ofcourse, it will have a built in battery and you will be able to unhook it from the stand and carry it around like a giant iPad. It won't be difficult, because the revolutionary and magical combined sensor grid and cover glass will reduce both the thickness and the weight.

Dammit... I'm just about to switch to Mac and was waiting for the next iMac update to come out... but then not sure if I'd want to risk getting a 1st gen touchscreen iMac (I'm a firm believer in waiting for things to be refined in the 2nd gen)... also don't want to compromise and get on of the current iMacs either. Argh!

ANYTHING, no matter how useless, to deflect attention from the obvious

Steve Jobs will grasp at straws attempting to deflect attention that Apple's highest end "cutting edge" and highest priced computers are shipping with 2003 optical drive technology because of his insistence that he alone can kill Blu-ray with lousy compressed crap videos from the iTunes store.

Pathetic. Keep the touch screens for the iGadgets and the iKiddies who will never understand real computers. Talk about dumbing down an entire generation.

And make sure your wrist is limp and your fingers loose as you flap your dead hand against the screen like a zombie.

Yes, because everyone knows, if it doesn't have the precious Blu-Ray, your computer can't do any work. None. Nada. Zip.

Might as well be a paperweight.

I still think the dumbest people of all are those who refuse to acknowledge a paradigm shift happening right in front of their eyes.

No, the dumbest people of all are those who see paradigm shifts were none yet exist (and won't for the foreseeable future due to economic disaster) to prop up obvious and arrogant inferiority.

And those who put up straw arguments to knock down.

Finally, another car analogy: We used car keys to unlock and start our cars for decades. Until the technology evolved enough to stop needing the key to unlock the car (my last car didn't even have a key lock on the trunk). Now, as technology continues to evolve, more and more car manufacturers are starting to offer a totally keyless experience for cars, instead replacing the key with a smart fob that stays in your pocket, and allows you to unlock and operate the car with push buttons.

And unfamiliar control on a rental car contributed to a family dying in a crash. While all you had to do was push the start button once to start the Lexus you had to hold the start button for three seconds to turn it off.
I'll take a key anytime and still want a keyhole on the passenger door and trunk. You may call it old fashioned, I call it mechanical redundancy that is sure to work.

I wonder what all of you would say if/when Apple does release one of these. Remember how people ridiculed the original iMac for not having a floppy drive?

Also, I know Steve Jobs doesn't like them, but I would like a stylus & pressure sensitivity. Think about artists. Some may need finer control than what their fingers offer. Just my 2¢

I think the stylus idea would be bad as much as I'd love it. Imagine the scratches you would get on your screen and also using a pen on a screen looks less nice than using your fingers. I have better control navigating with my fingers than with a pen. I'll continue to use my intuos for art :)

I think there might be a small market for a touch surface interface that's angled like the screens we used to see in the newest Star Trek science fiction episodes.

But I don't think the majority are ready for it, so you're talking about a tiny minority within the tiny minority that composes the Apple community.

My bet is they're putting this on a back burner, behind many other things that they're working on.

I can see it working with the right ergonomics maybe a screen that can lie flat with the desk, maybe at a 10 deg angle (or adjustable) for easy touch use but then back to almost upright for KB/Mouse use and viewing video when back from the desk.

I think it will work and might co-inside with 10.7 and iOS integration. But my question is will Apple eventually make the KB/Mouse options at extra cost like they do with the Mac Mini?

I'm looking at getting a new Mac to replace my PM G5 and this would be ideal depending on the spec list.

I just thought of an issue of the built in camera, if the screen is almost flat with the desk imagine the angle, people could be looking up your noise during video chats LOL

ETA - At first I see this as an option, if you don't want to you can still used your Mouse and KB to control the next Mac.
