There it is. Took a swing and missed then topped it off with an insult. Bravo for being the reason for PRSI.

Apple is set to give U.S. users of its mobile Health app a one-tap option to sign up as organ, eye, and tissue donors when the company releases iOS 10 this fall (via CNBC).

The option to enroll in the national donor registry will be made available via a button in the operating system's native Health app, which allows users to view and manage their health and fitness data.

Speaking to The Associated Press, CEO Tim Cook said he hoped the new option would help ease a longstanding donor shortage, a problem that hit home when Steve Jobs endured an "excruciating" wait for a liver transplant in March 2009.

Cook reportedly offered to donate a portion of his own liver because the two men shared a blood type, but Jobs turned down Cook's offer and later received a full liver transplant.

Jobs died of pancreatic cancer in October 2011, aged 56.The U.S government is currently pushing an initiative to speed up the donor and matching service, while Facebook, Google and Twitter are also developing tools to achieve greater automation in the process, as part of their own public advocacy campaigns.

According to government statistics, someone is added to the national organ transplant waiting list every 10 minutes and 22 people die while waiting for life-saving transplants every day.

Apart from an interface overhaul for the Health app, iOS 10 includes major updates for Messages, Siri, Photos, Maps, Apple Music, News, Apple Pay, Control Center, and more.

Update: Apple has published a press release that says all organ, eye, and tissue donor registrations submitted from iPhone will be sent directly to the National Donate Life Registry managed by Donate Life America.

Doesn't say anywhere in the article that the organ will only be donated in event of death. Could be problematic.

I am not sure whether this is a good idea. I can understand the impetus behind this, but businesses getting involved in what should be the responsibility of public organisations brings additional chains of responsibility. What happens if something goes wrong and the choice is not correctly recorded? Or data is leaked along the way? Who is responsible?

I am curious as to how MR determines that a health app update for organ donations is a political item - SMH. I have been censored in the past for what they believe were political statements in a non-political thread. The arbitrary decisions that the editors are making is a bit baffling.

On point -
In the last few months, my brother in law died and I accompanied my sister at the hospital. He had not declared his intentions in writing so there was an emotional heart wrenching conversation to figure out what was the right thing to do given the circumstances. I have since updated all my documents to make my choice explicit so that there is no question when the time comes. I think that in the US where this information is found on the Driver's license it should be mandatory for everyone to choose either way when you get your license. Right now it shows up only if you opt in. Everyone should be forced to opt in/out so it is clear. I think what Apple is doing here is good too, but again if someone does not opt in, that does not mean they have specifically opted out, so it leaves a bit of an open question.

Because it is a political topic. I believe that assumed consent (i.e. opt-out) and forcing people to make a choice about this are morally wrong. This is a strictly personal decision and I do not think that it is appropriate for the government to mandate this. It is an organ donation after all; a gift. Nobody is entitled to someone else’s organs. I have been registered as a donor (without exceptions) since the moment I became old enough to make that decision and I strongly advocate that people should become donors. However, people should make that choice themselves, whenever they want to.

What "safeguard" will their be, other than Touch ID, to prevent a false positive or false negative? I just see a story in the future about a donation made in error, or not made. Unlike credit card fraud w/ Touch ID, there is no rectifying the mistake once the organ is removed or the body is past the point of organ viability.

Arrogance shouldn't exist but you toss it in our faces, just like some religionist. What is the difference? I see none. People should believe in whatever they wish as long as it's peaceful. It's a natural human right.

Would be hilarious if there's another iCloud hack.

( ) I don't want to share my organs, they're mine.
( ) Just take them already, can't take them with me can I.
( ) Add the proceedings to my iTunes credit.
( ) My ex says I don't have a heart nor brains. If found, please process them organs as dog food.

Health is nothing to do with an app. What you do with your life with choices and sentient decisions determines, to a large extent, your health. There is no way I would ever handover personal decisions to an app, least of all an Apple app, and further least of all a decision about what happens to my body. That has already been decided and is not a piece of information I want in Apple's hands.

Same here in Singapore. Auto-opt in. You could opt out if you wanted to, but honestly, I see no reason to. What use have I for my organs when I am dead?
Obviously you wont. But your loved ones might have a great deal to say.

As someone who is not at all religious, I'm hard pressed to find how your post could be more arrogant and offensive. Who anointed you the world's king and asked you to decide what people should legitimately prioritize? Get over yourself.

"Apple's mission has always been to create products that transform people's lives."
That's it right there, the smugness, holier than everyone, the blatant two-facedness and cynical control. Macs, phones, pads, pods are not the stuff of people's lives. Computers are no more than a pencil or a piece of paper.

I doubt it.

But I will make a note to bring up this topic with them should the opportunity ever present itself.

When this "presents itself" you will be dead.

Organ donation has been a part of the "Medical ID" portion of the Health App from the beginning.

(How many of you know that this great feature exists, can be opened from the lock screen by first responders*, can be used to get your critical medical info and call emergency contacts from the lock screen? … *As something like a volunteer paramedic (Samariter), we haven't yet been trained to look for these but I do.
I wonder if any medical professionals are officially trained to look. I don't have any significant medical issues, so I loaded up the emergency info section with personal information like my address and car description, and health insurance information.
