Apple's passing the opt-in to the government database. This is no different than Motor Voter or opting into organ donation at the DMV.

But is it even legal?
In California you can do the DMV or the state run registry. Other states let your relatives/heirs decide. Yet others ...
Then add in other regions, countries, etc...

Great concept just wondering if this is going to help get others on board and straighten things out or create more confusion and chaos? o_O

It is really easy in my case and many others like me that served in the military in Europe in the early 80's, we are banned from donating blood or organs here in the US. They are afraid that we might have been exposed to Mad Cow disease.

The information you provide is sent directly to 'National Donate Life Registry managed by Donate Life America' so I believe paramedics will not need to access the users device but rather just look up on a registry.
Now this makes more sense. Since it would be easier to look for the ID instead of looking into the phone.

I hope this feature is not US only as this problem exists around the world. It wouldn't take much effort to regionalise this feature so it gives you the organ donor option in your country.

Its in the Medical Card from the lockscreen. When you press home (in iOS 10), you hit home again (using your thumbnail) it will show the passcode screen. Bottom left is the emergency button and then Medical ID button.

I'm amazed at how many docs I've talked to that have no idea that functionality is on the iPhone. I set it up for my M-I-L, and when I mentioned it to my doc, actually had to show him where it was and how to access it.

I can't wait until we reach the point that we can 3D print human organs. Halloweens will never be the same again...

We're pretty close now, aren't we?

Let's see... Apple overcomplicates texting with ridiculous animations, scratch offs, collapsable bubbles, then introduces organ donor registration. Coincidence? I don't think so... LOL

As someone who is not at all religious, I'm hard pressed to find how your post could be more arrogant and offensive. Who anointed you the world's king and asked you to decide what people should legitimately prioritize? Get over yourself.

When you're dead, your beliefs are irrelevant. Why should others die for the sake of beliefs.

I would donate, but just the idea that they might mutilate the eyes even though I would be dead, just sounds disturbing.

Those things are gonna sink into the back of your head and they're gonna use contact lenses with metal barbs to keep your eyes closed, I wouldn't worry about it.

Correct me if I have misunderstood.
So, the user can sign up on the phone, but who is there to unlock the phone when said user passed away?
Who is there to give the final authorization?

Well you're dead and they have 10 digits (fingers) to crack that puppy open.

Possibly 20...or if the Touch ID was not enabled...
