I legit had to check to see what date it was. Thought for a second or two that it was April 1st! Lol
Yes, Google (and Samsung?) have been goading into doing this, but now have the high ground in that they can say they're working with a standard. It neatly knocks down one frequent complaint that detractors wheel out.
Really trying to make it look like iMessage isn’t a gate keeper?

This is great! I don't care what color they are, as long as I don't have to resort to getting little blurry thumbnails of photos from everyone who happens to have an Android.
I know this won't happen, but in a perfect world I would love for as many standards to be under one "roof" as possible. Like with the old iChat app that combined a bunch of other messaging platforms, I'd like to be able to open Messages and have iMessage, RCS, SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, etc all in one place.

I wonder how much Google paid Apple for this "when pigs fly" news.
Which I've never understood because the Messages app icon is green...so you would think they'd have made that blue if blue is the superior color in the debate...
This may have something to do with oneplus making an iMessage app for their phones. better to have an Apple version than some other third party app.
This is wild, apple has been doing a lot of unusual stuff this year.

"Gate keeper". Good grief. Why on earth shouldn't Apple create the best messaging service that they can for devices on their platform? This has gotten so out of hand with people believing they are entitled to things simply because they...like using Apple products.

I wonder if this was prompted by all the antitrust stuff going on. I think they should demote the iMessage indicator to the contact card. The blue v. green psyop had its day and now just looks immature.
Genuinely never expected this to happen unless the EU specifically forced it. I really hope this will be done in a way that preserves privacy to the maximum degree and doesn't just funnel everything through Google's servers. Besides that, I will enjoy improved messaging with my android pals.
Not really. This is likely a defensive move meant to stall efforts in Europe to force interoperability with iMessage given new regulation on gatekeeper platforms. By adopting RCS, Apple likely thinks it can make a stronger case that the EU Commission should not force it to open up iMessage. Not sure if it will work though.
