The article I read on 9-5 made it should as though it was a different app? or it changes the convo based on participants?

"RCS will simply supplant SMS and MMS and exist separately from iMessage when available"

Wow, this is incredible. Of course Apple isn't doing this willingly but rather attempting to do it ahead EU forcing it soon anyway. Regardless of the motivation thrilled at the outcome.

Of course it will come down to the actual details, of how this will work, and any downsides or limitations which I'm sure there will be plenty. With iMessage you can send as many large images as you'd like that get sent full size with full meta (unless you choose to hide that globally or case by case). When sending to Android of course you can only send a couple photos otherwise it will not deliver, and images will be compressed and meta data gets stripped such as location and time, making it hard for sharing photos with family and close members who want to add those photos to the libraries and have the correct date/time/location. And of course being able to tap back on messages fully.

Here's for hoping all that works seamlessly. I'm rather doubtful, but no matter what it will certainly be far better than what we have now.

I assumed at some point the carriers were going to force Apple’s hand here
I wouldn't be surprised if one of the carriers notified Apple that they would be deprecating SMS/MMS in the relatively near future. Apple was always going to have to move to RCS at some point down the line. And notice that Tim Cook didn't say never, just that it wasn't a priority. Something changed to up the priority.

RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association.

I think they were very precise and specific with that language deliberately. Google has been billing their far from standard messaging as being RCS and then pointing to the RCS standard making it seem like it's apple's fault. Now Apple is with a straight implementing the standard just so they don't have to deal with the people confused by Google's lies any more. They'll probably also point out when people are upset that they don't get all the perks that google has been implying that those perks come with joining google's ecosystem and giving them control, not with implementing a standard.

So stupid. I guess crying and complaining does work. Google needs to work on making their own products better rather than complaining about Apple's success. Many times, I have made fun of Apple for having an inferior keyboard, app icon layout, etc. But Apple deserves their success for their innovation. Google is just sad in this respect.

Read carefully…
“the standard as currently published by the GSM Association.”

Carriers that have adopted RCS will get native support, I’m guessing, in the Messages app. It doesn’t say anything about non-carrier solutions that currently depend on apps. :)

RCS has some major flaws, but I guess this will be better than SMS. Group messages are horrific right now with android.
Yeah, at a bare minimum it’s a tangible improvement over the current status quo.

I am still a bit surprised by this development. I think Apple is preemptively warding off certain antitrust criticisms of its platform. I wonder if an update to the App Store profit-sharing model is next.

Whoop whoop!!! 💃🕺👯‍♀️ I can't wait for the ability to send pictures and videos to my green goblins without it taking 10 minutes and arriving in lower-quality. Makes you wonder if they will use a special-colored-bubble for RCS - maybe orange? Or purple? Any guesses?
Any colour will be used to create division; this is what Apple wants and has no problem with creating a toxic society over something petty as an effing choice of phone.
