I see apple still having a green bubble for RCS. They'll support RCS and its features but will differentiate from "secure" iMessage users with blue and green bulbs.

Seems like Apple is unable to innovate by themselves, the EU will accidentally make Apple great again.

Now we just need to convince the EU to regulate the 3D Graphics framework to Vulkan, to add a decent Filesystem, add a normal mouse cursor, to denotch the iDevices, etc… the list is long.

RCS is so stupid. No thanks.

Get ready for "oh you're a green bubble? are you non-RCS green bubble or RCS green bubble?"

Or is it a new color? Brown bubble? Can you video chat with brown bubble people? Who knows. Imagine teaching your mom this.
Color issues? Seriously?

Apple will adopt part of standards based RCS to make it easier without messing up iMessage functionality.

I would understand this if you change “innovate” to “comply”.

Imagine actually being stuck on the colored bubble train. RCS will make messaging more secure (which relying on SMS for non IOS devices makes it pretty insecure). How anyone can read this and be upset is laughable.

You don't need to teach Mom anything, because bubble color doesn't matter and it never did.

Google's statement today says they're going to work with them to implement it on iOS in a way that works well for everyone. :):apple:

I don't know why apple was so against this at first. This is good for everyone.

“Compared to MMS and SMS, the standards that Apple uses for text messages, RCS supports higher resolution photos …”

Confused.

Is iMessage based on MMS/SMS, or a proprietary protocol made by Apple?

Will RCS enable direct message between Apple Device and Andriod device over internet, skipping the mobile carrier (hence the sms charge)?

More colors is just a mess. There really should be only one color - having a "special color" for iMessage is just annoying - I understand why it might have been needed since SMS had significantly less functionality than iMessage, but if RCS brings enough parity, ideally it should be just one color and they can have some kind of sender-visible warning if they try to use iMessage-exclusive features when sending a message.

I don’t know, I like knowing what protocol is being used, what server infrastructure I am relying on, etc. when communicating with someone. It doesn’t have to be color - for example if swiping left on a bubble shows me the details, that is good enough.

But honestly, I would almost prefer iMessages, SMS, and RCS to be completely different apps. I get that might be a bit too much for most people though.

Can you give me an example of a company that currently operates messaging in the way you think is virtuous?

Meta's messaging platform Whatsapp is E2EE and available on pretty much every platform you could think of, even dumb phones like KaiOS.

I wouldn't call it virtuous, that's your word and not mine.

My carrier charges me £0.65 to send a photo to someone using MMS. Because they can. Since I am averse to using WhatsApp, I just don’t send mobile pictures to my friends with Android devices. I don’t like pi55ing money away. Hopefully, this will stick two fingers up to my greedy carrier and allow me to send photos to my Android mates. So long as there’s a setting that says NEVER USE MMS!

iMessage is a proprietary protocol. RCS is another proprietary protocol. Both work over the internet with no carrier involvement.

SMS is an old phone protocol and is handled by your carrier. Hence it requires cell (unless your carrier can deliver SMS over the internet).

RCS is not proprietary. It's amazing how long people can bleat on about things they don't know anything about.

RCS is a 100% proprietary standard owned by the GSMA.

Are you under the impression RCS is open source? If that were true, anyone could implement RCS on their home server lol
