But all the speculation points to the same thing. I have yet to see one of these stories mention any amazing tech/IP that Apple is after. What's really scary is this part from the NY Post article:

So Apple just begun doing "due diligence" and dug up some unsettling information but are still going to announce the acquisition this week? WTF?!?

It's the New York Post. It's one notch below the National Enquirer. Sheeeesh.

Why do you guys care so much though? If the products are what you like why does it matter what somebody else says about it?

I just don't understand how a successful company buying another successful company can draw so much hate.

Because I think Apple is better than this, I think there are better ways to spend their money and more important things they should be focusing on. I guess I never thought Apple's first big acquisition would be for an overpriced headphone company.

Billboard reported the same thing last week.

As long as Apple keeps making computers and developing OS X, then I'll be happy. I could care less if they want to spend billions on some silly "bass cups" that are passed off as headphones by high paid shrills such as "rap artists" and athletes. These "artists" would recommend a dixie cup on a string as quality headphones if paid enough. Stick your head inside of the kick drum during a rock concert and you will get an idea of what Beat headphones sound like. All bass and absolutely nothing else. But the upside of wearing Beats headphones: they make rap music listenable since all you hear is bass and none of the other drivel they label as lyrics!

This reduced price makes it much more palatable! :D

Disclaimer: This is a joke. This is only a joke. Please do not be offended.

I get that due diligence is normal. My WTF was around Apple apparently just starting that now but the acquisition is supposed to be announced yet this week. Seems a bit rushed IMO.

Again, why would you believe anything in the New York Post?

Perhaps apple will actually make the headphones high quality now?

A music legend is about to be even more wealthy with this acquisition.

Unfortunately I don't think he'll be making anymore music

I have never understood the argument that Iovine is going to help them start a content network (Apple TV). That's like saying "we want to start an airline! If only we knew someone who built trains..."

Billboard? That's supposed to make it more credible? Really?

Why not. This isn't a technology acquisition. Billboard does know a thing or two about music. I'm sure they have connections in that industry (no way is Apple the one leaking this stuff).

Just Beat It

I do not understand the fascination with Beats Audio. Just like I do not understand the fascination with AT&T and DirecTV -- Neither one makes any sense. Now if Apple would consider acquiring BOSE that would be something that would make sense, just the same if they would acquire DirecTV - Just Saying... ;)

Very general rule of thumb: about 2-3 times revenues.

Apparently, Beats booked $1.3B in 2013. $1.3B times 2 = $2.6B and times 3 = $3.9B. At $3B, Apple is much closer to the 2X than the 3X.

Companies make acquisitions on multiples of EBITDA, not revenue. Revenue by itself is meaningless.

re: original article
Wish steve jobs were still around to rage at any idiotic idea dr dre and cohorts would come up with. not sure aapl should have paid so so much for beats
wish aapl exec's would explain this purchase with more clarity
"money for nothing and chicks for free..." dire straits

It will be worth it if they simply improve iTunes flow and Radio.

Bonus if Ive has a crack at designing some on/over the ear headphones.

If this does happen, something tells me it's more about getting Iovine onboard to help work new content deals and build additional online services that people actually want to use, than for the headphones. I sure hope this is the case. And if it works out, he may end up being worth significantly more to Apple than 3 Billion bucks, as insane as that sounds.

AAPL....has....said...absolutely....nothing....yet. It's....still.....an....unconfirmed....rumor.

After 80 posts there's still no 'urban', 'ghetto', 'thug', 'gangster', or 'not even a real doctor'?

You guys are slipping.

EDIT: didn't search for 'black' so missed that group of posts; these Beats threads are usually less 'direct' that that.

Yes! Love that this is coming true and eating at the hearts of all the buffoons on these forums that spewed nonsense and subliminal racism over the past 2 weeks. A few parting thoughts:

1.) The Beats Music app is awesome on iPhone and iPad and makes iTunes look tired and old
2.) Beats Music features every genre of music, not just hip-hop for you ill-informed
3.) The executive team at Apple is smarter than you and is likely to have thought everything through before forking over $3,000,000,000. Certainly more than your sensationalistic opinions on MacRumors.com Forums.
4.) Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre built a billion dollar business together - what have you done over the past 6 years?
5.) No one cares what you "audiophiles" think sounds the best. Hilarious how all you guys just throw out random brands that no one has ever heard of and declare them the best quality. Perhaps those brands should learn from Beats and figure out how to get people to spend $200-$400 on headphones to drive $1B in revenue per year. That's what Apple cares about.

This +1, well said.

I think this story now claiming Apple hadn't even done due diligence when the story first broke is ridiculous. Apple offered $3.2 billion to buy a company they hadn't even looked over? I don't think that's how large buyouts work.

Was just going to say this...lol

Anyway...I'm not quite sure why they don't just partner. Must be more to it. I'm assuming Dre and Jimmy can get them better deals in the music category. I'm not sure why Apple couldn't just make a badass headset with an Apple logo on it.
