After 80 posts there's still no 'urban', 'ghetto', 'thug', 'gangster', or 'not even a real doctor'?

You guys are slipping.

People can call him all the names they want but one thing they can't take away from him is his success and his billion dollars. Haters gonna hate

They probably dropped the price just enough to make Dre's net worth after the sale come in under $1B LOL.

Oh we're still going on about this supposed acquisition? I'll believe it when I see it.

Glad it's happening if only because of the absurd amount of outrage it will generate.

Yes! Love that this is coming true and eating at the hearts of all the buffoons on these forums that spewed nonsense and subliminal racism over the past 2 weeks. A few parting thoughts:

1.) The Beats Music app is awesome on iPhone and iPad and makes iTunes look tired and old
2.) Beats Music features every genre of music, not just hip-hop for you ill-informed
3.) The executive team at Apple is smarter than you and is likely to have thought everything through before forking over $3,000,000,000. Certainly more than your sensationalistic opinions on MacRumors.com Forums.
4.) Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre built a billion dollar business together - what have you done over the past 6 years?
5.) No one cares what you "audiophiles" think sounds the best. Hilarious how all you guys just throw out random brands that no one has ever heard of and declare them the best quality. Perhaps those brands should learn from Beats and figure out how to get people to spend $200-$400 on headphones to drive $1B in revenue per year. That's what Apple cares about.

+1 perfectly said!

Apple bought Beats for:

1: To help restore their "cool" factor in Music. Something they lost dramatically when they started Ping.

2: A kickstart in Music streaming. aka. the death of music buying individual tracks

3: Acqui-hire of Iovine and Dre to sway TV cable companies to bring iTV to market.

4: They get the content licences for streaming from Beats. They don't if they were to purchase spotify.

5: Beats are a profitable company

1. I don't see how owning Beats makes Apple any more or less cool.

2. Ok, but Beats hasn't been very successful yet in streaming. But I wonder how much the algorithm Iovine and co. have talked up about figuring out the perfect next song plays into this.

3. I don't know how Iovine helps them sign TV content providers, nobody has explained why that would suddenly change things. He's a music exec. Signing music companies, sure, but why would Comcast listen to Iovine? And Dre helping sign cable and TV networks makes even less sense, he has no history negotiating deals like that.

4. Possibly, but it has been widely reported that Beats content contracts are not transferable. Nobody knows for sure until it's announced.

5. Yes they are, and that makes the most sense of the whole deal, probably the only thing that makes sense right now.

We should learn soon enough. Someone had a good theory about Beats branded clothing made by Apple with wearable tech. As good of a reason as any I suppose. I can't wait until next week to finally start to hear what Apple is up to next. If Tim Cook says one more time that great things are coming without anything being announced I'm going to scream. lol.

they'd have to drop it a lot lower than $3b then ;)

So basically Apple just wants the revenue stream from overpriced headphones. Seriously Tim?

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. $1B is a drop in the bucket for Apple and it has a superior brand.

For that much money, Apple could purchase Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic and AKG and create the best headphones in the world. Combined with superior design and backed by Apple's marketing machine, they could corner the market for premium headphones and still have money left over to create a world class music streaming service.

I just hope this isn't one of those rare brain farts by Tim Cook, like the hiring of Josh Browett.

Ha as much as I can't stand Beats headphones, because they suck and sound inferior to many brands; I think Dre is an iconic Rap/HipHop legend and find your post spot on.

re:eek:riginal article
so called dr dre and iovine in the same league as jony Ive?
we need steve jobs back

i think that would cost them more than $3billion.. a whole new iProduct backed by apple's marketing machine? except the product is 'only' headphones? to me, that sounds pretty risky.

seems better to buy a company with a great marketing machine in place already.. especially if they want to bring certain products to market which don't necessarily warrant the whole iMarketing shenanigans -or- too much iStuff could be a detriment to the perceived value of existing istuff.. having a big/hip brand under their wing (seemingly) opens up quite a bit more avenues for them to explore.. even things like shoes, clothes, etc except under the beats name.. if a product under that name flops, it won't hurt apple in the same way iShoe would.

I hope it is mostly brought up as a side note, similar to when they have a developer come on stage for a minute or two. Really it's not a highlight, and not something that Developers would likely care that much about unless Apple/beats have made some new hardware, API's etc...

Maybe Apple will improve the audio quality of Beats headphones. Get rid of that shiny fingerprint magnet plastic and start improving the build quality.

I would hope that if this goes down Apple would want to produce something better than Skullcandy.

I don't think Apple is trying to get into the "headphone" business. There might be something more to this.

But since you mentioned it... what prevents Apple from buying Beats for the brand name... and then hiring some extra audio engineers to expand their audio products?

They could have "Beats by Apple" headphones for the kiddies... and then "Beats Pro" for audiophile-class headphones, studio monitors, DACs, etc. Apple could still become a premium audio device company.

Finally! Someone with some sense! Couldn't have said it better myself.

On a side note...as Spaceballs has already said, here is hoping Dr. Dre makes an appearance at WWDC and drops a Detox track.

Huh

It says it will indeed happen... Before it was a rumor and not official, so is it any more official and any less a rumor than before since Apple and Beats have made no such announcement? Rather it's still just another rumor and if it doesnt happen the sources will say it just fell through even there never were real negotiations.
