Apple always holds an iOS SDK event in the Spring. It's been in March before, but last year it was in April (post-iPad announcement/ship date).

I'm not sure where that puts the iPad 2. Do you hold an iOS preview event for an OS that won't be shipping until June (and presumably won't be shipping with iPad 2 intially)? Then again, iOS 5 may ship earlier this year since 10.7 Lion is also due this summer (although I highly doubt it).

Absolutely I do. This is the same company that runs 'get a free iPod touch!' promotions to get rid of back stock and then updates the product a day after the offer ends.

The difference being that the people who buy iPads at retail for Valentine's day will still be within the 14-day return period on the 16th. People who do the back-to-school deal can't swap their old model for the new one at an Apple store, but the Valentine's day buyers all could.

We're talking an announcement, not a release.

Just announcing it would kill sales of the current iPad.

No, this will be at a planned event where Apple can discontinue the current iPad for the new one or shuffle prices as they have done in the past with the iPhone.

I think you are off base here though. The Free iPod Touch is a free iPod Touch. I took advantage of this in 2009. I knew that when I ordered my MBP and got the free iPod touch that in a month it would be updated, but then again it was FREE (okay I upgraded to the mid level model so it ended up costing me 70+tax, but that was still a heck of a deal for a one year old model).

Apple is marketing the iPad in which you have to PAY for an iPad. It isn't like they are giving the iPad away free with purchase of a laptop.

Comparing the two promotions are completely different. You can return a free item, but what are you going to get for a refund?

Going forward, all announcements of new iPads will be on or at least very close to the release date. They will not butcher sales of their older versions because they have already announced a new model. Apple is smarter than that.

I'm wanting an iPad 2 but even more than that I am wanting a MacBook Pro. They need to hurry and give us some info on the update for the MBP!

I doubt iPad will be announced before march and updated on April.

I think Apple will. It is good timing. Plus, android flagship Xoom is supposed to be out around feb. 24. The valentine is apple's effort to sell all the iPad they can before a new version will be out in late march or Early April. So far, Dell Streak, Samsung Tab and Notion Ink tablets are out.

Yes. An announcement that will see everyone who is within the return window with a first-generation iPad bringing them all back to the store.

Apple announces upgrade and then release the product with 3 weeks. So, if apple were to release iPad 2 in April, then announcement would be in March. However, I think the iPad 2 will be released late March, which would bring the announcement late Feb. Last year, they announced a new category product iPad in Jan. They meant to release it late March, but ended up early April.

Not if delivery is 30 days after the announcement. V-day is supposed to be the reason some are saying they won't have an announcement but that's not a good reason. . Think about why someone bought for this day- they bought to give as a gift not for themselves. Are they gonna ask for that gift back so they can return it? I don't think so. Anyway I find the whole theory that there are great numbers of iPads bought on Valentines day just for the free engraving that might get returned pretty illogical. People buy candy and flowers and cards to give. Small stuff for the most part. The iPad is not a romantic gift that one would be inclined to give on impulse despite a few commercials Apple runs suggesting it.. Those with the money to impress with that kind of gift are not going to want to look cheap by asking for it back to return it. Especially if they had it engraved. That's not romantic. If you have a girlfriend you should know that.
I was more impressed by the fact that Best Buy has put their iPads on sale which should clear out inventory and Best Buy has a two week window on returns.

Thank you finally someone who shares my idea! Exactly what you said, the person is buying it as a gift not for their own use so they won't care if a new one is announced a day later. My thought is on a feb 15-16 announcement with a available now or a week later launch.

It may be just me, but I think if I gave someone an iPad as a gift, and a new one was announced a day or two later, I would be terribly embarassed. I think I might feel worse than if I had just bought one for myself.

In either case, I think mid February is way too early for an announcement. I'm expecting they would release late March / early April, with an announcement at the most 2-3 weeks earlier than release. So the earliest I expect an announcement is first week of March.

Thanks! I felt someone had to say it. It sounds to me that those people saying everyone is going to ask for their V-day gift back cause they can get a better deal a month later really must not have any girlfriends. That does not get you points with the ladies. Especially if they gave you any "special" gift in appreciation.
If you are that cheap you'd be better off getting your iPad engraved locally with a nice sentiment and giving her that, then quietly buying a Gen 2 as soon as it comes out.

I Agree with whoever said an announcement will just kill the sales of the Ipad 1. Its hard to beleive all the speculation since everyone has something different to say. Originally, everyone was look at feb 9th, that was the crazy release Date, Im assuming people were extremely dissapointed when It turned out that Feb 9th was the date for Apples release of the Iphone 4 to Verizon. I doubt there will be an announcement, Just a release, But They should bring it out before week 17, since thats what Blackberry plans on Releasing their new Tablet, "The Playbook", said to be the tablet to Combat the Ipad

Are you serious? You really doubt there will be an announcement event? You think they will just put it in the Apple Store one day and that's it? When have you ever seen Apple do this?

Is this thread back from the grave?.. oh well. Since there was no word that there would be a meeting next Tuesday on Friday (They always let the press know several days in advance) I think we can accept that it's not happening that soon.
But there could be an announcement later in the week and maybe a Friday alert that there will be a meeting on the following Tuesday (21) so there are still possibilities in February. Hang in there.

You mean the $1,200 32GBXoom? I doubt Apple is very worried about that.

When Apple announces an upgrade to an existing product in a keynote, Steve usually says that's it's shipping immediately. If stock was running low, I could see it; but the apple online store told me that it's shipping within 24 hours.

AT&T appears to be clearing the iPad accessories for 50% off per an article on Gizmodo.

That would seem to be a clear sign that something is imminent.
