Some already complain about uneven colors/backlighting in their iPads.. now they are changing to just 1 light bar?

As nice as this all sounds, the original iPad is mostly dead to me.

the Mini is the perfect balance of form and function; bring on the next generation mini with a retina screen and comparable battery life.

I feel the same way. Having both a full size iPad and a mini, my full size iPad almost never gets used.

I wonder if they will keep the same price/capacity. $600 is a lot to pay for any device with only 32GB of memory in 2013.

Eventually the iPod touch came down in price, but given how few competitor tablets I see out and about, the iPad is probably not yet at that point.

As someone who reads a lot of A4/letter-sized documents, this looks like the iPad that will finally make me upgrade from the first iPad. It will be the iPad that addresses all three of the complaints I had about the original iPad: underpowered, low-res display, and too heavy.

I had the iPad 2 but sold it, as I have a MacBook Air which I use for everything. iOS touch based apps are gimmicky, and being a touch typer for many years, the no tactile feedback for the Ipad is a sore point. I also don't use many of the apps on the iPad.

As for this obsession with lighter and thinner, this is going to hit a brick wall one day as whenever this method is used, something has to be removed or rolled backwards - aka the LED backlight. Having two LED backlights is better for colour and light balance, and yes it uses more power, but you just increase the battery capacity to compensate for it. Cutting this back to one LED means saturation might suffer, and the BLU (Back Lighting Unit) wont cover as evenly as two of them, which means image integrity may suffer - all because we are chasing size over functionality. I wonder what happened to the Sharp IGZO display?

As for the bezel, the original reason why the Bezel was wider is to support your fingers / thumb better, otherwise you actually touch the screen inside the viewing area which negates the point having a bezel. Bezel's these days are mostly used to house display electronics and wireless cards.

I'm in the other camp, I use my full size iPad occasionally as a "netbook" replacement and I can type pretty quickly "desktop style" on the normal sized virtual keyboard, and I also do a good bit of remote controlling of desktop machines so having the larger size helps there as well. The only thing I really wanted was for the large size iPad to lose some major weight and ~30% is quite a bit.

I'm already looking forward to the 6th Gen; what else can they do with respect to form-factor to entice people to purchase?

All I want is a retina iPad Mini. I can't remember the last time I longed for something so badly.

This is pretty awesome. I've actually stopped using my iPad as much in the recent months because I just find it a bit heavy (especially having used other peoples mini's now!).

"Obsession with thinner and lighter".

Yes, most people prefer their portable devices to be thinner and lighter. Apple should make a special version just for you, thicker and heavier.

Too late.

6 months into 2013 no new products.

No wonder Apple have had a profit fall.

Too late?... Really?

how innovative haha

anyone updating from the ipad 3?

i hate to repay for accessories like my SD card reader and HDMI - REAL hdmi out :D

but but but steve jobs said the ipad was the perfect size?!?!?!

Decisions

Been waffling on a Retina Mini 2 or the next gen full sized iPad. If the full sized one has been slimmed down to more closely resemble the Mini the call gets even harder. Will have to look at the specs when they come out. It's nice to have real options.

Ipad 4 is old tech let's be honest.

Ipad is stuck in 2011/12 very little innovation whilst Ipad mini showcases a better looking device.

I know this is sarcasm, but yes indeed it is innovative. Such a high resolution display with such performance, battery life in such a thin and light device is truly innovative. Just look at all the Samsung, Sony and Google tablets out there, they are inferior on all those aspects.

While I agree that Android devices are coming close to iOS devices quality wise, I do think that event the current iPad is still way ahead of the competitors.

iOS apps are "gimmicky"? riiiight.

the no tactile feedback for the Ipad is a sore point.

huh? if you need tactile why not use a physical keyboard accessory? they come built into several ipad cases on the market.

I also don't use many of the apps on the iPad.

Ok so if you dont use the ipad, then perhaps the ipad isnt for you. i think thats what it comes down to.

As for this obsession with lighter and thinner,

it's not an obsession, it's just common sense. a device like this should be as thin & light as possible. if youd ever used an ipad for an extended period of time youd know this.

this is going to hit a brick wall one day as whenever this method is used, something has to be removed or rolled backwards - aka the LED backlight.

perhaps you arent aware of improvements to the manufacturing processes used to build our tools & technology. they continually improve. what took more space is continually improved with things that take less space. has been going on for a century...seen your radio or TV lately?

ahh -- so youre a display engineer, are you? or, no...?

because we are chasing size over functionality.

size IS functionality.

and to support the heavy weight of the early ipads. but as they get lighter, as as the edge-detection software improves, less grip is needed.

Full iPad cannot come with thin bezels.

Why this is so was already answered when iPad 1 was released.

yeah same here -- we have different use cases for the two sizes. i prefer the performance and resolution of the ipad for many tasks, such as gaming or remoting to another machine. but i prefer the mini for laying in bed and whatnot.

I think that uneven backlighting may actually be caused by having two light bars, since not every light bar is a 100% the same.

Furthermore, the iPad 1, 2 and iPhones all have had 1 light bar, so it's not something new.

No wonder Apple have had a profit fall.

...yet remains the single-most profitable company in both mobile AND pc, and had 14% growth. doomed. should just sell it and return the money to the shareholders, right?

jesus.

I doubt Apple will sacrifice image integrity. That would be very out of character for Apple.

The iPad mini has tweaked software that ignores touches in the edge of the viewing area so shrinking the bezel doesn't sound far fetched or adversely affect usability.

I can understand how a touch typist may not feel as comfortable with an onscreen keyboard but many of us made that transition and actually enjoy typing on such keyboards.

I would disagree that the apps are gimmicky- sure there are some out there that are, but not all. Many are quite useful and have great interfaces.
