Full iPad cannot come with thin bezels.

Why this is so was already answered when iPad 1 was released.
Original iPad: 680 gram
Current iPad: 652 gram
iPad 5: 652*66% = 435 gram

According to this estimate, the iPad 5 will be 37% lighter than the original iPad.

I remember correctly, they didn't mention this fact at the original iPad announcement.

how innovative haha

anyone updating from the ipad 3?

you still dont get it. nobody at apple expects you to upgrade all the time. only a tech nerd or a wealthy person would do that. normal people upgrade years apart, as their need dictates. and they upgrade to the "latest", whatever that may be. apple updates their designs annually just as stereo, TV, and auto makers do -- yet nobody in their right mind upgrades those annually. so why would you do so now? if your current tool does the job, keep using it. nobody's forcing you to upgrade...but when you do, youll appreciate the steady improvements leading up to the latest.

get it?

as the device gets lighter, and the edge-detection software improves, the wider grip area becomes less needed.

Hopefully they'll dump 16gb completely and go 32/64/128gb in the current 16/32/64gb price slots.

16gb really has no place in a 'retina' age.

There is no need to store anything on your device. Simply use iCloud.

If the iPad Mini Retina is any thicker/heavier, it'll be disappointing to me... but I know it doesn't matter in the long run.

Applications and movies/tv shows? I'm not always on wifi.

but but but steve jobs said the ipad was the perfect size?!?!?!

He also said that it was magical how you could hold it either way and that there was no real difference in how it was held.

The moral of the story is that The Steve would say anything to rake in the bucks. Honestly - why would anybody believe a word he said after he claimed to be sterile? He wanted to save a few bucks, and so he allowed his illegitimate daughter to be raised on welfare.

That is despicable in my book.

But to be fair, he was a very effective corporate CEO. If you adulate capitalists, then he is a great one. He's right up there with John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Nobody knew how to turn a buck like Steve Jobs.

There is always a need for local storage. 64gb isn't really enough for me anymore. With 16gb you'd get the OS, one graphics-intensive game and a handful of apps and that's it. I prefer to carry my data with me instead of relying on having a network available.

Damn. That Truth.

I have an iPad 3 currently and have found myself longing for a Mini w/ Retina after having some exposure to the current model.

If they release this larger iPad and the Mini 2 w/ Retina, I am in big trouble decision-wise. There is a lot of differentiation right now between 9.7 and 7.9. It sounds like this update will narrow the gaps significantly.

Hmm...

No, the total thinness is 0.2mm down from the 0.25mm of the iPad 4.

I agree, the sentence is a little hard to get. I re-read it a few times.

As is your sentence, as the lack of a single comma makes it hard to understand.

Did you mean: "...the total thickness is 0.2mm down from the 0.25mm of the iPad 4", which reads that the total thickness is 0.2mm less than the thickness of the iPad 4, which is 0.25mm, for a final thickness of 0.05mm.

Or, did you mean: "...the total thickness is 0.2mm, down from the 0.25mm of the iPad 4", which reads that the total thickness is 0.2mm, which is 0.05mm less than the thickness of the iPad 4, which comes in at 0.25mm.

That one comma is pretty important to the meaning of the sentence...

"Lighter" "Thinner" ,... less battery life again

Someone needs to deal with Mr Ives device anorexia soon, before apple are only allowed to sell unusable glass slates

TMobile AWS compatibe iPad?

Any rumors about whether, like the new AT&T/TMobile iPhone 5, the new gsm iPads will support AWS HSPA+?

Seems like it would be a no brainer since the antenna is in there for LTE on AT&T. It would be a nice addition for those of us looking at switching to TMo when our phone contracts are up for renewal as they have ok tablet data rates.

This will finally make me get rid of my iPad 2. The mini holds no interest as I do most webpage reading, ibook and Zinio magazine reading on my iPad. The screen on the full size iPad is just barely large enough - with the mini I'm afraid I'd constantly be zooming and scrolling around a page.

I have 16GB devices and each have 125 apps on them, including 6 "graphics intensive games". (Eg. Real Racing 3, Injustice) plus many other games, as well as documents and data. I do use iTunes Match though to save space. In addition, there are many many graphically great games which are not huge in size (Eg. Crazy Taxi, Infinite Fight). Just my 2 cents worth...

I swear, Apple needs Kate Moss to start selling their products. "Thin!" "Thinner!" "Lighter!" Let's just give them wings and call them "Maxi iPads". :p

Wow... that was really funny... 3 years ago, and the first 1000 times we heard it way back then.
Your sophomoric humor machine get stuck in a time warp?

I'm looking forward to this. I sold my iPad3 and got the mini but I miss the retina display, so if they follow through on these rumors I will be buying one for sure. I just wish it were available sooner than late Fall. I plan to keep the mini for out and about but I really want the full size iPad for use at home. I still don't believe any retina mini rumors.

Having only one LED to light the entire screen will allow a big cut in battery capacity, but that will also come at the expense of potential CPU/GPU performance. Personally, I think it would be best if they kept the same size/weight battery as the iPad 4 and just cut the overall casing size down a bit by reducing the huge bezel area. A small SoC update over the iPad 4 would be nice too--say a 28nm process upgrade of the A6x with significantly higher clocks (dual 1.8-2.0 GHz [max] Swift; 450-500 MHz PowerVR 554MP4 GPU).

Could you refresh our memory? Why exactly?

Because the iPad 1 at its weight would be very difficult to hold without the bezels. That problem goes away with a combination of software (as in the iPad mini, where contact with the screen at the edges doesn't always register) and lighter hardware.

They should make the software lighter ;)

Don't agree at all.
I don't want to have a cell connection on my iPad. Don't want the power drain, don't want the money drain, don't want the extra cost up front. This means that i rely on WiFi. fine at home and the office but otherwise not always there. I have a three year old 32GB iPod Touch that's got about 15GB free. When I got ready for my last road trip though it was less than 2GB free because I loaded it up for the road. Ain't going to be able to reach iCloud in the car. Can't rely on it as some greasy spoon diner in Armpit NB. If I'm going to use my iPad to view photos or a movie or music they need to be local. Our current iPad is a 32GB and our next one will be a 64.

And that's ignoring the small size of iCloud. Sure it's like 5GB free but to rent more is another monthly cost. Nope, not interested.

Sheesh, kill a guy for being a little silly. There, I edited for you as not to offend your delicate senses :)

Thinner and lighter would finally be enough to get me to upgrade my 1st gen iPad

Everything else on my wishlist is already there in the current iPad, but I want something significantly lighter. I would go for a mini, but I have a couple of important things where I really need the screen size (technical books and taking notes).
