Looks like this may finally convince me to upgrade from my trusty iPad 2. :) Besides thickness and weight, the one physical property that I would like to see improved is the screen reflectance. Glare has often been a problem for me with the iPad. They reduced it significantly with the iPhone 5, I hope the new iPad gets the same treatment.

I have an iPad 3 currently and have found myself longing for a Mini w/ Retina after having some exposure to the current model.

If they release this larger iPad and the Mini 2 w/ Retina, I am in big trouble decision-wise. There is a lot of differentiation right now between 9.7 and 7.9. It sounds like this update will narrow the gaps significantly.

Hmm...

</first world problems>

I think the specs separation will help.. Currently, the mini has iPad 2 innards, making the 4th gen full size comparatively a power-house. If the retina mini uses specs close to the original retina iPad (3rd gen), then there will still be a significant processing differential.

Looking forward to this years iPad update. I prefer the design of the iPad mini so if they upgrade the main iPad then I'll buy one. I'm also looking forward to a retina iPad mini. I passed on the first version but if it gets retina I'll probably buy one of those to. Gonna be an expensive Xmas this year. :D

Previous rumors have also suggested that Apple would be able to use more efficient backlighting in the fifth-generation iPad, reducing the device's size both directly through eliminating one of the two backlight units and indirectly through allowing for a smaller battery.

"More efficient backlighting" is a band-aid approach. Eliminate backlighting completely in favor of OLED display. iWatch is a start.

I agree that there will always be that type of separation in specs. For me personally, I am just fine with the processing power of the 3rd generation. Any extra would be nice, but not a requirement. Thusly, it becomes mostly about form factor.

I have 16GB devices and each have 125 apps on them, including 6 "graphics intensive games". (Eg. Real Racing 3, Injustice) plus many other games, as well as documents and data. I do use iTunes Match though to save space. In addition, there are many many graphically great games which are not huge in size (Eg. Crazy Taxi, Infinite Fight). Just my 2 cents worth...

Many higher end games clock in in the hundreds of megabytes to even over 1 GB a piece.

It's great you can make 16 GB work for you but for many of us, it's a no go.

I for one, believe Apple should make 32 GB the minimum for all full sized iOS devices -iPads, iPhones, iPod touch.

Currently using a 3rd gen iPad, my daughter has a mini. I really like the design and size of the mini so will be waiting to see what the next generation has to offer, then I'll decide between that and the next iPad depending on which I prefer when I get a hands on with both.
Finding the 3rd gen a bit laggy at times, in particular when typing. I'll update when the new models are out, if the bank allows.

So far OLED doesn't look that good. Brightness is nice and they don't use much power but color rendition is not that great and there is still concern about lifetime. The different colors fade at different rates.

It was curious that they forecast a build rate of 2-3 million a month. Last quarter iPads (regular and mini) sold at about 6 million per month. That implies, given some growth by the fall, that the full size iPad will constitute around a quarter of the iPads sold. I'm not promoting either one. It's just that I don't think we've had many sources of numbers like this.

He also said that it was magical how you could hold it either way and that there was no real difference in how it was held.

The moral of the story is that The Steve would say anything to rake in the bucks. Honestly - why would anybody believe a word he said after he claimed to be sterile? He wanted to save a few bucks, and so he allowed his illegitimate daughter to be raised on welfare.

That is despicable in my book.

But to be fair, he was a very effective corporate CEO. If you adulate capitalists, then he is a great one. He's right up there with John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Nobody knew how to turn a buck like Steve Jobs.

Looks like Apple corp. and SJ can add tax evasion to their list of accolades.

"Obsession with thinner and lighter".

Yes, most people prefer their portable devices to be thinner and lighter. Apple should make a special version just for you, thicker and heavier.

No point chasing this push with these obsessions if you end up having a product thats not as good as the original from a backlight / display point of view. If one BLU is removed and only one is used, this won't be as even as two BLU units which means possibly even more spotlighting, backlight balance issues and uneven colour and backlight saturation.

As I asked originally, what happened to the IGZO displays by Sharp?

iPad 5 will have at least 1.5 GB of working memory

I am no "Ming-Chi Kuo" but I feel iPhone 5S / iPad 5 is probably going to have at least 1.5 GB of working memory.

Remembering, iOS version of iPhoto now support 36.5MP images but only on iPhone 5 and third-generation iPad (and iPad 4) and this is because both of these devices has 1.0 GB of working memory.

The iPad Mini 2 is probably going to miss out on the extra memory. It is not just because of its smaller form factor. Apple, somehow, has to differentiate the features between the small and big brothers.

Just look at what they did with the iPod touch 5G!

I have a 3rd gen and I just bought my son a mini. I will definitely get the new iPad if it feels anything like the mini!!

Moving from a 2nd gen to 3rd gen the ipad just got too heavy.
