Yes, but I've been saving for this since January so I can really get either. The only problem now is that Apogee released the Symphony I/O which I am really looking forward to getting in conjunction with the new Mac Pro.

You're gonna get the 12 core to do audio?

Do what'chu think is necessary, but I've literally been unable to strain my octo. Heck, it hardly breaks a sweat. And that's with all kinds of Native Instruments stuff running, bunch of effects etc.

I thought this was going to be like "coming august"....And it comes on september third. THAT ALWAYS HAPPENS!!!!!

Maxing a 12 core would be pretty easy if you're streaming from lots of sample libraries. EWQL's Hollywood Strings comes to mind.

That being said, I have heard that logic still has trouble fully supporting 8 core machines, so who knows what that means for a 12 core Mac Pro.

Thanks for the advice. I've been leaning more towards the 3.33GHz 6 core. The only thing I'm afraid of is running out of RAM since I will only be able to go up to 16GB, since Logic is more concerned with RAM than processing power at this point. I just want this computer to last me for a good amount of time, but I'm sure I'll be more than find with the 6.

The new 12 core is impressive but frankly it's not great enough to get me to switch from my '08 MP machine (see specs below). From an accounting perspective, I'm not even done depreciating this machine which I'm doing over three years and coincides with my three year AppleCare plan. Heck these machines are built like such tanks, for all but my most extreme tasks I should be good for another 2-3 years giving me a 5 year life-span.

Anyway, to get 12 cores I thought the press release said that machine starts at $5k which is a lot of cash to be sure.

BTW, I could see using a lot of cores in the case of virtualization. I already run WinXP with Fusion and give it 2 cores to work with. Can anyone tell me why you can or can't run run multiple virtualized machines at once and throw several cores and a bunch of RAM at each?

Apple should have..

Apple should have turned one core off..

Then they could have used "This one goes to 11".

Make the 12th core come on w/ a system pref.

Just sayin.

Any word on an order date for the 27" Cinema Display?

September.. The 24" ACD is $799 now , while supplies last.

This is prob the first Mac ever I didn't think I could afford since Jobs took over.

Ever since Apple switched to intel the cheapest Mac Pro's started at $2499 , just look at the WWDC 2006 keynote... Also Apple has priced these machines very competitively, also the 12-Core behemoth is priced $600 cheaper then HP's 12-Core offering.

Apple has done a great job. Anyone who complains about price doesn't know the competition and what they offer for similar specs.

Not really my friend.

Apple recycle program offered me $1660 Apple gift-card for my 08 3.2GHz 8-Core Mac Pro and I willing to take that too

That's not a bad price. On eBay, one of those speed with 2GB of memory, one hard drive and one superdrive sold for 1,795. It doesn't say what GFX card it had, so you probably have it beat there too. If you have good feedback rating, I think you should be able to get that much, even after taking fees in consideration. Taking Apple's offer would be more convenient though.

I wouldn't think that simple sample mixing would be a CPU-bound bottleneck, unless you combine a lot of effects with the samples. Short of lots of computed effects applied to the samples, I would think your bottleneck might still be bus throughput. Of course, I would suggest you refer to actual testing based on something that is similar to your actual work.

Oh yeah. And that's just EWQL's stuff. The full VSL library is an even more epic behemoth.

I am working on a project that will use orchestrations + standard rock recordings, using a sample library for the orchestra and Superior Drummer 2.0 for the drum sounds (another big sample library), NI's Guitar Rig for the guitar sounds, and my main phatty plug in is PSP's Vintage Warmer 2. Start running all of that at once and you'll tax any system. I have to freeze tracks constantly with my outdated system.

A twelve core render-farm-in-a-box would do the job. I'll have to put a kidney on eBay to afford it, but God gave me two, right?

There are plenty of good reasons to have 12 processor cores, but running Microsoft Word (btw, get Pages) and iTunes at the same time is not one of them.

Sent from Firefox while listening to iTunes.

EDIT -
"The new Mac Pro. It's so fast, red looks blue."

for some reason, I feel like you may not need a 12 core Mac Pro to write a 3 page paper while running iTunes....

What to do?!!

Question for everyone here - I'm really in need of a quick action on my part regarding buying a Mac Pro. As most of you probably know, Bing ends their Ebay cashback program tomorrow so I want to figure out the Mac Pro to get before then so that I can take advantage of the $200...

Anyways - My options are this:

2.26GhZ 8-core 2009 Mac Pro (8GB RAM, ~4TB HDD)
-or-
wait for a week and either get a new 8-core or hope that the price goes down..

Do you guys think the prices of the 2009 Mac Pro's are going to go down after the new ones come out? I saw some fluctuations in the prices when they were announced, but I think the sellers on Ebay are going to keep their prices up until they absolutely have to drop them..

The 2.26GhZ build I listed up top was on Ebay for $3549.. Price-wise keep in mind that I'm getting $200 back from Bing and I don't have to pay the 8% NY Sales Tax, which is an additional ~$280, so it's a ~$500 difference as it is..

What should I do?! My main use for this computer is going to be HD video editing using Final Cut Pro, so I really want to stick with 8-cores for the rendering and encoding I'm going to be doing. I'll be using it quite often to so I want to make sure I get a computer that is going to have a good life cycle for editing the 1080P footage I'm shooting..

Sorry for all the questions - please help though, such tough decisions!

-Zack

Why no Pro graphics cards?

Nvida and ATI make 30 professional graphics cards
and the best Apple offers are a couple of mid-range
consumer cards. A choice of only two cards to hook
up to the four year old 30" ACDs?

Just assume newer is better, overlook vertical resolution altogether, and lust over the 27". Just LIKE glossy. LIKE IT. You have to.
