I wouldn't think that simple sample mixing would be a CPU-bound bottleneck, unless you combine a lot of effects with the samples. Short of lots of computed effects applied to the samples, I would think your bottleneck might still be bus throughput. Of course, I would suggest you refer to actual testing based on something that is similar to your actual work.

I think the 2.26 8 core mac pro has issues with heavier Hollywood Strings patches because only 1 core can be used per track. That's pretty CPU intensive.

That's not a bad price. On eBay, one of those speed with 2GB of memory, one hard drive and one superdrive sold for 1,795. It doesn't say what GFX card it had, so you probably have it beat there too. If you have good feedback rating, I think you should be able to get that much, even after taking fees in consideration. Taking Apple's offer would be more convenient though.

Apple will pay for the shipping cost if I do decide to trade-in my 2008 MP, and my spec's are a little better then the one you mention on ebay that sold for $1795 my spec's are

2008 Mac Pro

Dual 3.2GHz Quad-Core (8-Core)
512MB 8800 GT
Two SuperDrives
Two 500GB HD
AirPort Extreme
4GB of Ram

And will totally take Apple offer or just upgrade my 08 Mac Pro with ATi 5870 and wait until next year to buy a New Mac Pro I just haven't decided yet.

Installing a Second 6-core later?

Is it possible to install the second 6-core CPU later or are the CPUs built right onto the board? The price should come down in time and I likely don't need 24 threads. Speed matching might be a problem.
Our old (1999) DEC Alpha started with one CPU board and we installed three others when the load got too big. But times have changed.

The CPUs are swappable, but the quad/hex machines are missing the second socket, so you can't just add a second CPU.

sweet... a race to see who's going to have the first 'super home computer' built for $10,000+. i'd love to know what a full 12 core with all four drive bays maxed, graphics maxed, etc is going to go for. i remember max config on the current gen was easily over $10k. should be fun.

Nehalem vs. Westmere

I couldn't find the specific price points, but will a six core 3.33GHz Westmere be that much faster than the quad 3.2GHz Nehalem? I'll be using it mostly for video editing.

Thanks, Apple, for actually giving us a heads up at least a couple weeks before you expect us to drop 5 grand on a new computer. See? That didn't hurt so much now, did it?

so which of the Mac Pros should I get. I've been using my Macbook Pro unibody as my desktop..... since I've moved back home from college, I need a real desktop with more power for Adobe Suite. I do Web design and Photography/videography.

i want to get the best bang per buck not the 12 cores lol.

but who can afford the damn thing? ...these things have just gotten out of reach for graphic designers. Hmm spend 5 grand on a mac pro which has no monitor and lacks basic **** like wifi or spend $2200 for a loaded imac with that sweet 27" screen. Decision instantly made here. My buddy bought the 2008 8 core Macpro and then recently got a 27" imac as a second machine and he spends all his time on that imac cus it works better. Macpros is just an overpriced dinosaur that gos obsolete way to fast for the cost:rolleyes:

for some reason, I feel like you may not need a 12 core Mac Pro to write a 3 page paper while running iTunes....

Are you one of those people that enjoys making snobby posts correcting people so much that they blindly ignore the possibility of sarcasm?

yea but the problem stopping me from getting the 27" is that the monitor sucks for photography editing.
