I did a lot more testing, and I finally figured out how this works for my setup:
1. The HDMI OUT of the receiver must definitely not be connected to the TV
2. The BD player must be switched on allowing it to fully boot before the TV
This must be done even if I want to play a multichannel SACD with the TV off (no TV, not multichannel)
But discs can be reloaded and restarted once the switch on routine is performed.
I can see the value in buying your whole entertainment system from one manufacturer or using discrete analog multichannel connections.
This also means TVs really need to provide more than 4 HDMI inputs and be able to pass through any digital audio format one throws at them (only optical out is not enough, they should also have true HDMI out, not just ARC).
