Seems people are deliberately pretending that it isn't normally scheduled for September at the same time as the iPhone release.

If Mark Gurman wants to say "Apple has decided to target iPadOS 16 for an October release, which is different from previous years", he can say that. Instead, he's saying "Apple Plans to Delay Launch of iPadOS 16 Update by About a Month", which is clickbait. The announced timeframe is fall, not September. Whether or not Apple was originally internally shooting for September or not doesn't matter.

(But, aside from that, what everyone else is saying: suppose it's true that they were originally internally shooting for September, and now October. So what? That means they have more time to iron out bugs. No issue at all.)

Separating iOS and iPadOS was a real mistake. It just seems to make iPadOS worse than iOS every year- this delay is just another example of that.

How does releasing an iPadOS feature that iOS doesn't have in the first place a month later make either iPadOS or iOS worse?

Ha, I don't think that's even an open. Apple was not satisfied with the results. That idea was shot down in Cupertino a long time ago.

My intake: Apple wants everyone to order new iPad equipment with M1 and M2 chips period 🙏
^^^ This.

Of course it's in Apples interest to corale people into buying new equipment and what better way for them than to gimp older hardware by saying it's not capable of running the latest and greatest feature in their eyes.

We want you to spend more so the wheels keep turning. Marketing 101.

They had it working on recent non-M1 iPad Pros with ample storage, but Apple said it wasn't responsive/fluid enough per online comments so they don't support it. Even the M1 based Air with base 64GB storage can't run stage manger, it needs at least 128 GB storage since it being used to also multiple apps to run at the same time.
I was only being sarcastic because of the backlash the other week 😂 thanks though

Interesting – every beta (on M1) has been rock solid for me.
I don't think it is related to bugs but instead to accommodate to new iPads launch, which is also expected mid-October. Perhaps to showcase some new features exclusive to M2 iPads...

They are far different use cases.

iPhone has Lock Screen widgets because you carry it with you. Having that would be irrelevant on an iPad.

iPad has stage manager.. would not work on an iPhone.

and so on

What iOS feature is a "must have" for iPadOS?

Not releasing at same time as iOS. It always suffers in one way or another.
You’re making an assumption that Apple had planned to release it the same time as iOS this year. Just cos they did in the past, doesn’t mean they’d planned it that way this year.

Apple have been mixing things up a bit with releases lately. They only ever said Fall, which is not limited to the month of September.

For all we know they decided to release it in October this year, in line with new iPads, so that they’re more consistent with releases (iOS with new iPhones, iPadOS with new iPads, MacOS with new Macs).

Also, you’re getting the ‘delay’ comment from someone that needs clickbait to make an income. Much more inviting than ‘Apple releasing iPadOS in October for a change’.

Why would it matter where the programmers are located?
There’s some obstinate people who equate working from home as being lazy/slacking.

It’s a rude and inconsiderate bias.

The company that I work for has had IT department working from home since March 2020, and there’s been a drop in quality from the developers working at home. In fact there’s actually been an increase in productivity.

Lol I wish but I highly doubt it. If anything Apple is more likely to include some new M2-only features if iPad OS 16 is delayed to be announced alongside new iPads.
M1’s advantage over M1 is the presence of a ProRes encoder/decoder. This will matter for those using video editing software like Luma Fusion. If Apple adds an M2-exclusive feature, it’d probably be some sort of ProRes video related feature. Of course, taking video with an iPad is just weird.

How strange. It isn't even such a big update. Honestly, someone could have secretly installed iPadOS 16 on my iPad and I would not have noticed.
It’s actually a huge update. Just because people get fixated on Stage Manager doesn’t mean there’s nothing in there. The biggest challenge besides Stage Manager will be Matter support, which I consider the biggest and most desired feature of iPadOS since I’m a big home automation junkie. There’s a ton of testing that will have to happen with thousands of different home automation gadgets. Matter has been in the works for years and is finally nearing release. I’m betting this is actually a lot harder to implement. A completely revamped Home app goes with that. Being able to gain HomeKit support for thousands of devices that currently only work with Google Home and Alexa is big.

After a great deal of research, I also found out why iPadOS is not gaining Matter support as a HomeKit hub. While iPadOS will continue functioning as a hub for HomeKit-only devices, I found that Matter depends heavily on Thread, which iPads do not support. It’s quite possible the next iPad may have Thread support to gain hub functionality for Matter. Meanwhile, Apple has secretly snuck in Thread support in the Apple TV and HomePod mini. Here’s another feature that may be exclusive to M2 only iPads.

Then there are the zillions of collaboration features, which was the theme of the WWDC keynote. FreeForm is still in process along with all the sharing features put into Safari and FaceTime. Shared features present in all the OS’es also takes a lot of development time, like the changes to Messages and Mail along with things like being able to pull text and objects out of photos and videos. Siri without Internet access is pretty cool. Live transcription is also huge for those of us who don’t hear that well. iPadOS 15 had a ton of features but people fixated on Universal Control, which wasn’t even done until March. Saying iPadOS 16 is a small update is nonsense.
