What happened to forrest fire bear? “Only you can preven the fire.” He probably got burned up as well.

I don’t know about other parts of the country but in California fire safety PSAs starring Smokey Bear are shown regularly. And the actual ‘Smokey the Bear’ was rescued from a fire as a cub and spent his life in the Washington DC zoo.

The Woolsey fire doubled in size to 70,000 acres overnight, and the evacuation area now applies to 250,000 people. Some of my relatives had to pack their car, ready to evacuate, then stay up all night on alert. But then the fire turned and headed away. So they are safe for now.

It's hard to imagine this many people being impacted and having their homes threatened.

Wind carries embers up to a mile away where they start new fires. You can not creat a fire break large enough to stop these fires.
Unprofessional opinion: I think the issue is more how high the fire break is than how wide. Embers rise and fall rather slowly, so a little height goes a long way. This is how chimneys and fire pits work. But for whatever reason, they don't build walls all over to deal with this.

California has lots of dry forestry that make it very fire-prone, but last year in NorCal, a fire was able to spread throughout a purely urban area and destroy the entire city. There were some accusations made about improper building codes making that too likely to happen.

free publicity
It's obviously not free. Also, these fires affect areas very close to Apple's offices, so it is more of a personal matter to them. You can see and smell / choke on the smoke right from Apple HQ.

There was a drastic wind change last night. Some areas are now screwed while others are saved. I had to cancel a trip because the forecast predicted heavy smoke there.

Money that wasn't there before now available for use to help.
Yeah this is a location where F U amount of wealth is. Hell even TV productions are shot, they are fine. Sucks for the Westworld location, but couldn't care less about the reality TV sets. They are fine without the Apple charity drive.

Not sure how one thing relates to the other. Not to mention that those locations are just a small area of what's affected by the Southern California fire, and then there's the Northern California one too.

Planting Aussie Gum Trees (Eucalypts) does not help .... I live in Australia and they burn even faster than pine trees, the eucalypus oil vapour can cause a 'crown fire' that sweeps over a hillside at phenomenal speed. When in CA in June I was amazed at all the gums that have been planted...

The Woolsey fire went from 0% contained to 5% contained yesterday as winds were relatively calm, but strong gusts up to 60 mph are expected today, starting about 4 hours from now. We're up to 83,000 acres burned and 250,000 people in evacuation zones, with 170 more homes lost since Friday.

The 4,000-acre Hill fire, also in Southern California, is 65% contained.

The worst fire is the 100,000-acre Camp fire in Northern California, now 20% contained, with at least 6,700 structures lost. 23 lives are confirmed lost and many people are missing.

We owe a huge thanks to California firefighters and to the firefighters who are here from neighboring states. They got little rest yesterday and they'll have even bigger challenges today.

Everyone is doing what they can to help. There are evacuation centers set up at schools and community centers, although many people are staying with friends and relatives. (We've offered our home too.) Animal shelters are keeping many pets out of harm's way, and there's a ranch taking in large animals like horses.

A lot of us are thinking about what we'd grab to throw in the car if we had to evacuate our homes. Getting people out safely is what's important, but if you have time to gather some possessions, what would they be?

It is as great thing that people are donating to help those in need...
My daughter and her mom lost their home (no insurance)

^Yep. The entire city of Paradise, CA is gone.

The fire in Ventura County is burning right near the area where the mass shooting was. Insane.

This kind of thing is only going to get worse with climate change. The entire state is becoming a desert. My area got less rain than Las Vegas in 2015.
Its literally a desert and always has been.

Its literally a desert and always has been.

No, it isn't and hasn't. California has a number of different climate zones; the largest zone is Mediterranean, including both hot-summer and warm-summer. There is temperate rainforest up in the redwoods, as well as alpine climate in the Sierras, and semi-arid in much of southern California. Only the Mojave region is truly desert. But other parts of the state are now receiving precipitation levels that are more characteristic of a desert.

I hope everyone here who lives or has family/friends in the affected areas are safe.

Thank you for the thoughts. My sister's house burned down in Paradise (her son lived in it). He just got out, driving through flames, but lost everything. He's a millennial looking for a job. I pass down my ipads to him bc they're out of reach otherwise. Now we’re focusing more on shoes, socks, shirts etc. Things like this always happen to someone else, until they don’t. A reminder that we should never take anything for granted.

So how much the Trillion Dollar company is donating?

however much it is, it wont be enough for you im sure lol
[doublepost=1541972635][/doublepost]has Trump said anything insensitive about the state that didn't vote for him yet?

Hardly “free.”

It's very profitable for Apple.

First they don't pay taxes by using offshore accounts. Then they make these donations which they write off against even more taxes.

I'd wager more a lot more money would go to public services if they just paid their taxes and "donated" nothing.

Then they also allow people to donate via iTunes, which gets people signed up with accounts and credit card information and just one click away from buying music and other products.
