I'm not planning to put iOS6 on the 3Gs, but will wait and see what others think. The 3Gs will be going to my mother, her first iPhone. She might need a new battery but it's mostly been a trouble free phone for me. I've had the occasional crash, maybe 5 in it's life. And sometimes the battery has run down too quick but right now lasts about 2 days with lite use.

How is iPhone 3GS for someone who has never used a smartphone. I am planning to buy one for my dad and he has always used the dumb phones. He has also never used touchscreen but i want to buy iPhone for him so he gets the great experience. He is not a power user at all. Since i am not 100% sure if he will adopt the iPhone, i am planning to get 3GS instead of 4/4S as it will come cheaper used and does not have that much glass as 4/4S so he can more comfortable with it.
Secondly i dont have to worry about cutting the SIM to make micro SIM etc and he can easily go back to his old phone incase he is uncomfortable with the iPhone.

PS: The phone is going to be used outside USA.

I think the 3GS is still a decent phone, its what my dad has and my mom, my dad loves how when he walks into his focus the sync automatically takes over the call and he can drive and talk.

The biggest worry I have however is the size, as reducing phones to 8gb is a joke and not enough space even for basic users, 16gb should be the minimum this is why I bought a refurb 3gs 16gb as i didn't want 8gb. my next phone will either be a refurb 32 gig 4s or if the price is right 32gig 5 but i doubt apple will increase the storage space on the base model to 32.

Yes, but that is irrelevant to the issue as to whether Apple will improve the cost per GB. They could get rid of the 16 GB and return to offering two models, 32 at $199 and 64 at $299.

128 GB nand modules came out earlier this year, but I doubt apple will use them right away. It took them well over a year to start using the 64 GB ones. The supply that they need probably isn't there yet.

I was replying to the "increase capacity" part of the post that I quoted - and you've now confirmed that the 128Gb modules are out there, but probably too expensive to use yet, so there wouldn't be a capacity increase (staying at 8/16/32/64 - probably dropping the 8 for the 5?)

And your point is? Apple designed their phones with fixed storage. Key words: designed their phones.

Thanks for missing the point. It is really fascinating that you like justifying things that are bad for the consumer. I mean if you look at iOS, its pretty clear they designed THEIR phones. Not yours. I mean, you can install things on your stuff that you want without someone approving it, right?

Let's be clear. You were saying other companies have something comparable. I'm saying they have something that Apple doesn't have. And you're saying Apple doesn't need it. Technically, you're right. But it isn't value-there's no reason not to put an SD card reader on an iPhone anymore in terms of space it seems. Would you really miss that millimeter, or would you rather have an extra hour of battery and expanded storage capabilities?

To be clear, I no longer see value in the iPhone.

About frickin' time they dropped that thing. What's it been? Three years? Four years?

8GB is not enough for anything, considering the size of Retina apps. Why not to keep 8GB 4 as a free with contract and 16GB 4S as a $49 entry model? Then offer iPhone 5 (or whatever) only in 32/64GB capacities?
