Headphone jack... Home button... all gone.

whats next? Volume buttons? Power button?

I wonder how Touch ID will work without the home button. Sensor integrated into display?

Don' t get your hopes up too much.
All these rumors are great, but Apple will never be able to put all of these improvements in a iPhone and being able to deliver a lot of units.
I guess all these improvements could be made in a special model (pro , anniversary edition, etc) and will be available in limited quantities, and you have to pay a premium price for it.
The regular iPhone 7, won' t have all these rumored features, perhaps one or 2.
And then there is Samsung , they are reading all these rumors, and with the s8 and note 8, they are already developing something to at least match a few of these rumors. You can count on it.

Imagine an iPhone that you can pick up, not worry about the orientation, and just use it.
No more fumbling around to figure out which is the microphone end and which is the head end.

This is just the beginning....

This sounds pretty cool, actually. It would definitely make the iPhone an instantly recognizable and unique thing among the crowds again, as it was with the original iPhone and the iPhone 4. And, at this rate of technological advancement I don't see why this couldn't come anytime soon. Sadly, I still guess this kind of complete overhaul will not come before 2018. If it came next year, now that would set Apple ahead of the competition again in such a manner that it would be too good to be true.

Can't wait until 2017. Like, I hate being made to wait for a modicum of forward thinking industrial design while Apple is snoozing on the wheel or goes off on tangents with groves, loops, watchbands and whatnot.

Curved screens. Better batteries. OLED technology. What will they ever think of next? Sorry. They've already thought of and has been on the market for the past two years?. Now, a built in infra red remote that you can control your television with. That would be something to look forward to. What's that you say? It's already been out as well? D'oh! How about wireless charging? Same answer? Ah fuggedit! Those pesky Samsung kids. If it hadn't been for them Apple would've got away with it as well!

You're taking the word "investment" a bit too literally.

Yes, I use words for what their meaning. Words, numbers, symbols, have definitions, otherwise communication is impossible. Left is up, Yellow is U-turn, Hammer is water. "Investment" is neither a synonym nor slang for buying a consumer good in any sense of the word's meaning. The way you are using it is gobbly gook so I'm amused that you are upset at me for wanting to use it correctly.

Getting rid of physical buttons except a power button is actually a good thing. Physical buttons eventually wear out.

Since iOS lacks a back button and unless you have AssistiveTouch on, you are left pressing the home button to go back to the home screen. On Android, you can exit out of an app with both home or back. iOS also doesn't have double tap to wake or off.

Raise to wake is a ripoff of Motorola's Active Display from 2013. It helps to wake the screen but you still don't have any gesture shortcuts to turn it off except press the oower button or wait for the display's sleep timer.

iOS already has on-screen volume controls, and that's the only area where it shouldn't wear out since you won't be pressing it 50x-100x per day like you do with a physical home button.

Curious, what happens to all the tech at the top of the phone? Ear peace, prox/ambient sensor, camera?

Simple get rid of them. Why let people hold their iPhone to their ears to make a phone call or use Facetime? When you can have a nicer looking iPhone. It's the ultimate in form over function.

That's cool and all but it's still gonna be one long year for Apple. Things aren't looking good for them with iphone 6SE. I suppose they thought if they had to weather a storm they may as well take away the headphone jack and get that over with as well.

Let's hope the MBP can salvage a lackluster year. That's a lot to expect out of an oled strip though..

Hmm. Even though volume is a very frequently used function, i've only rarely seen the buttons worn out - even on very old, very well used iPhones. In most cases the buttons far outlast the phone!

Sure, you can use the on-screen controls. But that takes more steps, and more time, to access and can't be done "sight free". How often do we use the "volume down" button to mute an incoming ring during a meeting or whatever? I do this all the time.

So where does Touch ID go? How do you hard-reset your phone now?
It's supposed to be integrated into the display.

There will still be a power button.
I would imagine 3D Touch will cover the rest. A big ol' round button will remain on the discount phones, last gen or otherwise.

They' ll probably will sell us a wireless power button or an adapter. Only $50.

LOL

But seriously, Apple will think about this and in the next 3 years, we' ll get used to the new methods for resetting, etc. that is the reason Apple won' t release a revolutionary iphone. They' ll let us get used to the new features one step at a time. So I don' t think next years iPhone will have all these new features at once. Perhaps one special model.

Hope that 2017 iphone will be really great, because now, looking at Samsung SGS6 Edge is like looking into the future:( iPhone looks so dated in comparison to it... If there was any chance getting iOS on that Samsung, would buy it instantly

ok meanwhile still no invites for sep event .. i mean if it's on 7th then shouldn't the invites be out now??

also about the 2017 iphone, if they could find a way of embedding camera in the centre of the screen it would be really cool because you could look into the eyes of your bae when you facetime

Where do they put the camera?

That's what I think. This sounds real nice, but even when it comes down to things like how to you hard reset your phone, there will always need to be some type of hardware button. And the home button has a lot of different functions. I'm all for them saving some space on the device, but not at the cost of functionality.

"S" is not about a period, it is the improved version; so in this case you would have to wait for the iPhone 8S;

This year with the iPhone 6 you actually have two "S" cycles, iPhone 6 - iPhone 6S - iPhone 6SS (named iPhone 7)
No, I wouldn't have to wait for the 8S since the 8 is getting released when the 7S is supposed to be released, alas it was replaced by the 8. This upgrade falls in line with us "S" cycle owners.
