I remember it. Wasn't it something like the dock? I forget.

from mac os 7-8, the launcher was a tool to quick launch applications. It gave birth to At ease later on (or was it the other way around?) ....

You can see how it might have influenced iOS... You could choose between at ease and the standard Finder for full control. I can see how Apple might go down this road again, allowing a streamlined iOS interface for the average user, with the ability to get full control if needed, and for power users.

Full desktop running IOS would be awesome for the average user - no window management, easy multitasking - the OS anyone could use. See that new printing support they just added, it's perfect for the average user. All that's really needed is some basic sort of file system, and the ability to add "plugins" for the non native codecs, like divx, etc.

I was trying to think of a path they could take on naming 11 and never though of constellations...nice one!

I thought maybe dinosaurs, OS 11 Velociraptor, T-Rex, etc. but then they're extinct so probably not.

I'm sure they could get a good run of releases named after birds of prey.

Won't hold my breath...

Besides what seems to be an obvious preview of "Lion", I'm hoping for Apple to update their product line with better Prosumer desktops and better Pro laptops..

Desktop - Either a mini-tower mac mini w/ 1 PCIe slot and support for one or two 3.5" hard drives, or better graphics and I/O in both the iMac and mini.. (triple monitor eyefinity support would be great.) I'd do just about anything for what some would call a modernized Centris 650...

Laptop - Better I/O (Bring back the ExpressCard slot to the 15") and maybe faster FireWire and USB3.. If Apple could surprise all with Lightpeak.. well..

No, I won't hold my breath, tho it seems like I have been, my 15" C2D MBP and 2.3GHz PowerMac G5 are both getting loooong in the tooth... I'm ready to buy, I just need Apple to sell something I actually want..

Finally something not related to all the iCrap.

Shame Apple messed up with the naming. Anyone with a brain cell knows that Tigers are the biggest and most powerful cats around.

What first struck me wasn't so much the lion, but "back to the mac." I may be dreaming here, but they have a massive new data centre, and a tag line that sounds an awful lot like Back To My Mac..

Jus sayin'

Anybody else feel just a tiny bit sorry for Microsoft - they just had the WP7 launch, media interested and the blogs full of Microsoft for a while .....now for the next week all the blogs will be counting down to the Apple event.

Genius marketing. :D

Your level of hurdle for genius marketing is awfully low. That "P" in WP7 stands for phone. Apple doing desktop OS versus Microsoft phone devices .... they aren't generally substitutable goods. Frankly, the hype machine only peaks for these devices for a couple of days anyway. Sales of Mac OS X boxes is going to suppress phones sales? Don't think so.

The event does far more to pump Apple's stock price than any impact on WP7 phones. The phones don't even arrive till the end of the month.

Second, this event comes about a year after Windows 7 came out ( Oct. 22 ). Apple has now cleared all the wave of W7 release and there are building questions about what going to do next. It has been over a year since Snow Leopard release ( Aug 28 ) and still haven't even set any hint of when next one coming. Given Apple has been on a less the 4 year cycle that is a bit out of step. (more close to a 2 year cycle ). It is extremely unlikely that Apple can get a quality OS out in less than 12 months and allow a reasonable about of beta testing by the hardware and apps vendors out there. Given that 10.7 should be committed not to breaking much as far as APIs go (as opposed to Snow Leopard) even more so . If Apple is aiming for a tigher cycle then 10.7 is going to be lame (mostly superficial eye-candy changes).

Apple seems to be doing a great job of providing products people want. Sales of Macbooks, Macbook Pros and iMacs are all up year over year for this year from last year.

The fact that they don't make a product that thrills YOU personally is irrelevant, since you're not Steve Jobs or any one of a number of major shareholders in the company.

I cannot wait for the new revolutionary feature mentioned in the summer tht should be in lion

This is AWESOME news.... totally out of no where. The fact that its being shown only a week from now is just even better.

And I agree with whoever said nothing can top a lion, the next OS will be 11 and probably touch based.

My guesses:

- New Macbook Air
- New 11" Macbook Air
- New Macbook Pro
- New 11" Macbook Pro
- New 10.7 OS
- Office 2011 For Mac
- New iLife
- Facetime For Mac
- And an update on the status of the white iphone 4 (PLEASE!)

 Ya, it's going to be lame even though noone has seen it.

It is true that SL is the first major release that has deviated from the 2.5 year interim that has been seen since Panther. This does not mean it will be LAME though if we see a preview of it and it comes out this time next year. Apple has far more resources now than they did when they were doing development on Tiger and Leopard.

Well this makes me feel a little better about my Mac. Hopefully its a substantial update unlike SnowLeo. Yeah, i know 10.6 wasnt supposed to look like an update, but rather feel like it instead, but everything about it feels old and it needs a good refresh.

Cool... Cannot wait. Gonna be great!

I agree, I'm tired of hearing about iOS & iPhones, finally something about Mac OS & the notebooks

Not to be a downer, but I sure in the hell hope this "Mac" event doesn't end up showing us all how OS X's roadmap is leading toward a more iOS-like experience. I think iOS is great for a mobile device and OS X is great for the desktop. I don't see any reason to push one to be like the other.
