The thin taped edge means that it slips into a briefcase. A fat, blunt edge would not do this.

The knife-like profile really contributes to the portability of the Air.

And that's worth trading away all the battery space that would fit into the space? I'm happy using my fingers to make a space and getting double the battery runtime.

One hasn't been announced yet. Anyone remember when that was announced for the last media event? I don't recall how much notice they gave us.

It was the day before. So, there's still a chance, though it's looking doubtful.

So clear, MacBook Touch!!

Overdue after the phone and the pad finally now appearing: The MacBook Touch (or some similar name).
Jobs wouldn't give away a surprise by showing a lion if there wasn't a much bigger deal tomorrow.

Ahhh so glad all of this iOS mumbo jumbo stuff is out of the way.
But what I am hoping for is a new MacBook Air.
Verizon iPhone doubtful
And obviously a new Mac OS what it will be called I can only guess Mac OS X Lion.
Hopefully a new iWork and iLife. I downloaded the 30 day trial of iWork 09 and its great.
I do wish Mac OS 11 *insert cat family name here* would get here tho...... :apple:

Mac OS 11 ? If you are counting we are basically looking at Mac OS 17... technically the 7th based on OS X (10)

What a load. Of course the footprint matters.
All you're doing is trying to justify your purchase decision after you made it, regardless of its wisdom (look up cognitive dissonance). What do they say about a fool and his money?

But I know I'm wasting my keystrokes on you here. Reason, logic and evidence is something you obviously reject.

I'm not sure if you are claiming that the other poster needs to justify his purchase to you or if you believe that his arguments are some attempt to justify it to himself because you called him out on being a fool.

Either way these arguments are usually from one person who loves iOS or Android telling the somebody who likes the alternative that they just bought their device because they are mindless drone who foolishly follows the crowd. Which is more or less a replay of the Windows/OSX arguments. Which are a remake of the Commodore-64/Atari-400/Apple-II arguments or in another industry, Ford vs. Chevy vs. Honda vs. Toyota.

Nobody needs to justify their purchase to anybody. The only valid justification for spending one's money is "I earned the money and I bought what I liked." It is why we have options in this world.

I respect your opinion on MBA -- I'm sure for you it would be a waste of money. I don't own one -- it doesn't really fit my requirements. I own an iPad -- that's worthless to some people -- works great for me.

Can we stopped passing judgement on folks based on our opinion of how they should spend their money? I have no problem with trashing a device you think stinks or is not worth the money. But if it works for somebody and they bought it, let's assume they bought it because "they earned the money and bought what they liked" -- and then leave it at that.

In my post I go out of my way to say what anyone wants to buy doesn't matter, that's their business. Did you read that bit? It's a question of why someone would buy the MBA when it's so poorly spec'ed and not much more portable than a MBP 13". Do you have anything to say on that subject? Do you have anything to say other than to call me names, because that doesn't relate at all to the subject of the MBA.

It is true what you say about what you asked, but the way you asked it was a very loaded question. To paraphrase.... you said "why would a rational person purchase an MBA over an MBP-13".

Well, that immediately implies that there is no rationality for it and anybody who does, must be irrational. My old boss used to do this when he wanted to get everyone to agree with him: "Why would an intelligent person do X?". Then all of his reports were on notice that if they backed decision X he would think they were not intelligent.

If you are really interested in getting MBA owners to answer your question, you might want to rephrase it. For example:

Can an MBA owner please explain to me why they would purchase an MBA over an MBP-13? And please give reasons other than 'thinner' and 'lighter' because the differences in those categories for MBA over MBP-13 are only marginal -- at least in my opinion.

I think you may get some insightful responses that way rather than knee-jerk reactions.

But I'd hate for people to make the wrong decision and their decision should be based on fact rather than clever marketing.

And yet it is a fact that the MBA is thinner and lighter than the MBP-13, even if that thinness and lightness are the two primary marketing points for the MBA.

I have an MBP-15 and it's a PitA to take with me anywhere because of it's size and weight and the fact that I do not require the performance nor do I need the optical drive nor all of the connectivity ports. An MBP-13 would be smaller and lighter, but it still offers components and connectivity I do not need "in the field" and there is a thickness and weight penalty therein.

I'm leaning hard towards the iPad, but if the MBA was less expensive and/or smaller, I would likely lean towards it because in the end it can produce content as well as present it and it offers more flexibility in said content presentation.

So my decision process is driven by weight, followed by dimensions and then price. It is also driven by marketing, but in as much as I am only looking at Apple products. ;)

I travel quite a bit and I really want to be able to carry my computer everywhere with me. An iPad or iPhone or iPod touch doesn't cut it. So I was very disappointed with the MBA when it was released. It is lighter and that's great but the fact that they kept the same footprint just so they could have these silly tapers that made the machine look thinner was extremely annoying. It's Apple as it's worse, designing form over function (think Cube).

I will be the happiest person on earth if they come out with an 11.6" model tomorrow. The proper size for a truly portable computer is no wider than the keyboard, because you need a full sized keyboard to do proper work.

They got rid of the CD drive which is a great idea. It's hardly used and definitely not used enough to justify having to carry it around all the time. They got rid of the HD drive which is another great idea. SSDs are faster and much smaller. I think having the Ethernet via USB is acceptable as long as it works smoothly. Soldering the RAM onto the board is a good idea but they need to make it 4GB because it's a minimum if you want to run a virtual PC, which most people do.

I really hope that the 11.6" model is not wedge shaped. Thinner is better but I don't see the advantage of having a back to front taper. You still have to squeeze it into a space according to its thickest point. The trade off with thinness is of course battery capacity, and possibly heat dissipation which brings us to the processor. I hope they don't use a low-voltage processor that runs at 1.4GHz or something. Battery size is a tough one since the more portable a machine is the longer you want the battery to last but of course a larger battery decreases portability. Personally I could live with 3-4 hours which is what I'm guessing they will aim for in a small machine.

Apple tend to charge less for the smaller laptops and because of that they tend of suffer in the specs. I hope that isn't the case. An 11.6" MacBook which was crazy thin with a proper processor would be worth paying a premium for.

We get it Nutjob. You don't think the MBA is a good choice.

Did I mention that we also don't care at this point?
