the one right now is a 13.3' screen. If you look at the pics of the keyboard, you can see about one inch on each side of the keyboard for room, so thats 2 inches all together that they can cut down. (13-2=11)

I bet the 11.6' screen was the smallest they could go without sacrificing the keyboard.

well, you're kinda right... they could do that. But hopefully it doesn't turn out to be a FAIL... ;)

Got my credit card ready for action next Wednesday, well all be refreshing that Apple Store like madmen once the keynote finishes lol:D

No

Nah, I don't see either the proprietary chip or the smaller screen size as probable. SSD's work fine and they're getting cheaper all the time. Smaller screen gets too close to the iPad screen size, further blurring that line. I want same size screen, bigger storage, faster processor & graphics, glass track-pad, 4 gig's RAM. That's a winner.

Oh, and a battery that lasts 50% longer. Why are you laughing?

Stupidest prediction ever

Here is what the new Air will be:

Form Factor:
Two iPads joined together with a hinge. One screen is the keyboard, one is the monitor (or it can be held book-style, like a Nintendo DS)

Specs:
It will be powered by four A4 processors so Apple can call it the world's smallest/lightest quad-core computer
2Gb RAM because any more would be too reasonable
128Gb in a 2-SSD RAID 0 array for amazing storage speed
The cheapest, nastiest graphics that will fit (or just the graphics parts of the A4 -- for 'quad GPU power'

Expansion:
None, or maybe an SD slot, but probably not. Maybe one USB port.
No DVD drive - the OS restore disk is a USB thumb drive. All applications must be downloaded!

OS:
10.6 on the hard disk and a copy of iOS4 on a ROM chip so you can flip between the two, like those netbooks that let you go into Linux for web or Windows for more

Price: $1,200

I want one!

PS this is all verified by me, quoting people 'familiar with the matter' (i.e. other blogs and fanwank speculation. :p

This sounds very interesting. I wonder what the pricing will be...

from a technical level it SHOULD be less than a macbook since its not as powerful, but who knows with Apple. If it is $800 which I doubt, it will definitely be something I'd want.

but wait, I thought apple isnt going to make netbooks!

I remember the days when smaller always meant more expensive... Back in the Windows days, I always had those 10 inch Vaios. PCG 505 and TR1 etc..
They would cost at least 50% more than regular laptops.

That mockup looks amazingly realistic.

They took an apple original image of the current macbook air, put it in photoshop, copied the image over to the right, transform tool to (11.6/13.3)=87.22% of the original size, and there you have it.

Jobs was right when he first introduced the MBA, saying that the problem with netbooks was that the screens and keyboards were too small.

He was right and still is. Given the 11" screen, I'll be quite happily sticking with my 13.3" MBA.

The keyboard and the size of the trackpad are the only things I am worrying about. They increased the size of the trackpad on all their notebooks and if they are now going to cram the keyboard and trackpad down it will hurt usability. (esp with multitouch gestures)
On other hand, they did have a keyboard on the 12 inch powerbook that some people loved.

Really

I think the person you quoted realised this, hence the smiley. ;)

Yeah, but what makes that an "Air" rather than just a plain old "Macbook?"
The regular Macbook will keep getting smaller. So either:

A - You shrink or change the Macbook Air in some way.
or
B - You discontinue the "Macbook Air" name.

If you don't pick 1 of those then you end up with Macbooks and Macbook Airs that are pretty much the same thing.

and what will happen to the keyboard? Steve Jobs always hated those "crappy" keyboards from netbooks... will it go touch? because if it doesn't, the keyboards will have to sacrifice a bit of their normal size to fit in an 11" notebook

Jezus people... ever considered that Apple may just go ahead and build a high quality, small machine? Huh?
Jobs said they didn't know how to build a high quality computer for $500. He never said anything about 'netbooks'.

As far as I'm concerned, 'netbook' simply means small PC made with cheap, crappy quality. Of course Apple won't make one of those.
They will, however, make a high quality, ultra compact laptop.

I'm so tired of people dredging up old quotes out of context.

You're assuming the new Air line-up will only offer one size.

What is the use?

I do not see something between iPad and Macbook.

I know iPad is missing Mac OSX.

Once you go light and 11.6" how can it be full OS X experience for any productivity? The lighter it goes the less powerful it becomes also.

I think leave the MBA as it is, be it a cash cow and let rich people buy it. Do something for Macbook and bring the price to $799, that will be hit with all the new iPhone users!

With the current Apple and AAPL momentum, $799 Apple Laptop and $999 iMac will be awesome. Intel CPUs are making the things more expensive, let us see if APPLE trust AMD and do something with them!

It is possible that it will be priced lower than a lot of people would imagine. Look at the iPad. People were saying $1000 before it was announced, then they shocked everyone and couldn't keep up with demand. The new Apple tv with lower price point is selling well too. Maybe Apple has decided there is worth in going after the midrange market as opposed to high end all the time.

So, is this going to be, dare I say it... a Mac Netbook kind of device?

Netbooks are usually small, cheap, and slow laptops. If this exists, it will be small, but not that cheap or that slow. There's lots of room for something much more expensive than the typical netbook, but still less expensive than the current MacBook Air, for customer's who value thinness with decent battery life over maximal cheapness/affordability.

They are the same, with one HUGE difference. The size and shape. Certainly it's the only reason to get one over the other.

it is more of Killer Product than whether it is high end or low end. Price always going to make some difference like the iPod nano sales but eventually iPod touch won out also (when the time comes right for it).
