I do not see something between iPad and Macbook.

I know iPad is missing Mac OSX.

Once you go light and 11.6" how can it be full OS X experience for any productivity? The lighter it goes the less powerful it becomes also.

I think leave the MBA as it is, be it a cash cow and let rich people buy it. Do something for Macbook and bring the price to $799, that will be hit with all the new iPhone users!

I expect this will have the same resolution as the 13" MBP and MB so it should be just as productive. The nice part is it will likely be as physically small as possible while still having a full sized keyboard.

A lot of people have been waiting for this. Not much bigger than an iPad but with a real OS, not the iOS kludge when it comes to a file system, and thus infinitely more useable.

If they make this and if they make that new smaller iPad then I count seven different screen sizes on Apple portables.

Most people will buy 2 of the 7. It doesn't matter what each device is "between." You just pick 2 and the 2 you pick are probably not right next to each other.

I bet it'll be ricockulously expensive and lack one vital feature that the second gen will have. Im betting $1299

it is more of Killer Product than whether it is high end or low end. Price always going to make some difference like the iPod nano sales but eventually iPod touch won out also (when the time comes right for it).

Yes but you cant ignore the fact that the lower price point has really helped the iPad take off. If it had been $800-$1000 entry point i doubt the sales figures would have been as high. Same goes for the Apple tv, they took out the hard drive and reduced the price. Apart from that is it much different than the old one?

just for the people hoping cheaper MBA, the low voltage CPUs from Intel cost anywhere between $200 to $300 (even to apple, not retail price), I highly doubt cheaper MBA with out breaking intel relationship and that means we are left with A4 and AMD.

A4 and AMD are the good enough for full Mac OS X?

agreed, $499 iPad was really right on the price minded customers... Let us see what apple offer is. four more days to go!!!

As someone who owned a Dell Mini 9 with the mini PCI-E format SSD purchased from MyDigitalDiscount, this would be just fine. I was able to upgrade to 16GB and use the Mini9 as a hackintosh. Installed Office 2004 and some other smaller apps and had 2.5GB free.

I wonder if Apple would even put it directly on the PCB instead of making it a separate card. The only problem is you'd lose all your data if the CPU or RAM went, even if the flash data was still good, or you'd have to replace the entire mobo if the SSD goes bad.

I think Apple would want a larger base model (32 or 48GB), but considering how SSD prices have been falling lately (Intel 80GB SSD has been on sale at newegg for like 170 AR, I bought mine year ago for 220) it should be easy for Apple to use a half decent controller chip and get decent speeds (150MB/s read; 80MB/s write) while keeping it around the same price as a baseline MBP 13".

No if they go with an SSS card it will likely be cheaper. I'm calling $799!
$799 is certainly an attractive price, but Apple is one to hold out for extreme profit margins. That's how they got to be the cash cow they are today.

In addition, Steve Jobs went out of his way to thrash and bash "netbook" computers as cheap junk. Claiming they would never produce one, nor any laptop under $1,000, it's hard to see Apple bringing in anything under the 1K mark.

One thing is for sure, Apple remains controversial and fun to watch.

Quicky 'chop to take the current design, shave 1" off each side and scale the screen to 11.6"

Well Microcenter is selling the current model MacBook for $799. Maybe it's the end of their financial quarter or maybe they know a new $999 product is coming soon?

Could be a new product replacing the current Air and plain old MacBook.

It seems that the current MacBook is the last Mac OsX product that is made out of plastic. They changed the Mini and the remotes in the past year or so...
Aluminum is more "green" than white plastic.

Just a thought/dream :)

This may mark the end of the 13.3" MacBook Air. So sad.

11" screen for getting any real work done is a joke.

So GLAD I ordered my beloved Sony Z ... 3 pounds of ports, power and pleasure.
Note that at the time when it was discontinued, the 12" PowerBook was a very popular model. The 11.6" screen about a centimeter smaller (diagonally measured, of course).

Not a big deal.

man you are giving wrong idea to apple, if the remove $999 macbook then only way to get full functional laptop is at $1199 (13" MBP) , more expensive :D

Apple needs to dump the MacBook. Make the air the new base notebook. Put 64 or 128 gb in it. $799 or $999.

I agree completely. I've been waiting for a 13" MBA with 4GB RAM for almost a year. Now, it looks like they are taking it backwards: smaller screen, smaller hard drive, probably cheaper processor (AMD?), and possibly no increase in RAM. Hopefully, they will 'airize' the MBP's, so we can get something portable with decent screen real estate. It remains to be seen, actually, that they will brand this device as an MBA.

If it's $800 or less with a matte display and fast CPU, lots of RAM, big SSD, and more than one USB port, I'll buy it immmediately.

Otherwise I'll pass.

You'll pass then. You might not get any of the 6 things you mentioned, depending on what you consider to be a fast CPU, lots of RAM and a big SSD for a notebook like this.

I predict:

$999
glossy screen
CPU a bit more capable than the current one
4 GB RAM
60-80 GB SSD (maybe with an option for 100-160)
1 USB port... if you're lucky

I think there's a half a chance, though, that Apple will be agressive on the price and you can have the base model for $799.
